Wales - as a nation, why are we so shit at sport? on 21:03 - Jul 25 with 627 views | Jackfath | 3 posters have mentioned Giggs as a sportsperson Wales can be proud of. I've asked what he's doen for Wales. Also EVERY country could name glorious old performers of who we could be rightly proud. I am asking about current performances. Now all this drug furore.

Wales - as a nation, why are we so shit at sport? on 19:42 - Jul 25 by centrestandswan | It is not only sport, just look how Scotland and Ireland sell themselves with pseudo tartans and culture we are not even in the same ball park as them. What have we got a national costume of women dressed in a strange outfit of red with a very scary black hat that in its self is manufactured. You could say we are sh1t at business there are not many great Welsh entrepreneurs, the only Welsh one I can think of is the chap Terry what's his name from Newport. Wales lacks self confidence at many things, sport being one of them along with business, culture, the arts and self belief. Having said that we do seem to have quite a few decent actors from around South Wales mostly men mark you. |
The thing that Ireland and Scotland has over Wales is a lot of people of Scots/Irish heritage live in North America and Australia. The Welsh didn't emigrate in nearly the same numbers (largely due to not having a famine and avoiding harsher forms of religious persecution).

Very true, I'd probably give that to Lahm or Dani Alves.

How many fullbacks are there in world rugby? Probably about 8. It's not a massive achievement.

I was simply stating a welsh sportsman that is top of his game on a world stage.

It's not really a world stage though. Outside Wales literally nobody gives a toss or will have ever heard of him. Doubt many people in Wales would be able to pick him out in an identity parade. Whereas Gareth Bale will be one of the most recognised faces on the planet right now.

Wales - as a nation, why are we so shit at sport? on 21:27 - Jul 25 with 561 views | yogibear_412 | We are shit because school sport is absolute gash.... I've witnessed in my school the pe dept do sweet fa for the last 6 years. Unless you have a head which fits a skull cap you got no chance. Welsh assembly pumped loads of money into a 5 x 60 scheme...trying to get kids to do an hour of sport 5 times a week. Unfortunately it's gone down like a fart in a lift as the people running it haven't a clue. [Post edited 25 Jul 2014 21:28]

Wales is pretty terrible at most things to be fair though. Our standards of education are disastrous (not the teachers fault, most do an excellent job). Our sporting pedigree is poor and the future doesn't look promising either. Our economy is minuscule. Our cultural identity and pride is at an all time low, even the capital voted against more Welsh power. Apart from Cardiff, every city / town is extremely lacking in investment and any hope of future improvement. I could go on. Wales is on a downward spiral and even I have no clue how to stop this and turn it around.

Wales - as a nation, why are we so shit at sport? on 21:33 - Jul 25 with 534 views | Highjack | Think the problem is and has been for a long time the facilities and the climate. So many players in the big football countries learned their skills kicking the ball around on the streets or the beach in the sun, but if you do that here you get run over or eaten by a jellyfish. I know when I was growing up if it was pis$ing down and wanted to go out to play football my mum wouldn't let me because I'd come home covered in mud so I had to stay in and play on my megadrive. (That was a gaming console in the early 90's, not a euphamism for my rather large member) Sure that's a story that a lot of kids in this country can empathise with.

Why do you think its solely down to the school, do you not have local sports clubs which offer specialist coaching in the team or individual sports one could enjoy?

I know a teacher in the local area who gives up his spare time every week to help the children in his school participate in sport. He gives up probably over 10 hours a week and has done for the past 15 years or so. Many have gone onto wonderful sporting achievements too and if I was to list them you'd be astounded at the number of children who have gone on to become extremely successful athletes from that one small school. Not all P.E departments and all schools are as poor as yours was.

Sorry, maybe not a world stage but he is one of best players in the world. And I wouldn't disagree about Bale, most expensive player ever playing for one of the most marketed teams in the world, of course he'd be more recognised. Out of interest what sports do you class as being on a world stage?

Why are the Scottish swimmers so much better than ours in the current CW ganmes?
