The reason America has intervened is because the Area is seen as the hub of the Kurdish oil producing area. If the ISIS gain control oil prices will rise and Europe still get's a lot of it's oil from Iraq.There are huge reserves there too.

To be honest it just shows how f***ed up the world is and how western sensibilities can never be applied to that region given Iraq was relatively peaceful under the brutal regime of a dicatator responsible for slaughtering Kurds.
The left wanted action when the genocide against Kurds was occuring. IMO, action should have been taken but even so that power vacuum would still have happened.
You say it's a disastrous foreign policy, there's no "winning" foreign policy in the region. None whatsoever. Hussein gassing Kurds? Depose him or arm rebels? Either way many forces then claim any replacement to be a western puppet gaining support from brainwashed residents; brainwashed because the media is fully controlled. Some would claim the media in Iraq was controlled by Jews probably.
