Can't do much about number 1

Swansea has GOWER as a release whereas Middlesborough has the North Yorks Moors which are magnificent. Plenty of leafy Suburbs too in Boro so its not all black as they make out/. Personally, I d have thought any of the inner London crapholes would win hands down but there again its the done thing to hammer places like Wales and the North. |
Richie. You won't believe this... I married in Swansea ... And spent my honeymoon in Middlesboro ! Do you feel for me?

I personally haven't lived there for about 15 years, so my views may be outdated, but: 1. If they think Wind St. is bad, they need to go to Union St. Same sort of thing, 3 times as long with an army and a naval barracks nearby. I know virtually everyone who works in the forces is great, but if you get 2 or 3 trained fighters pissed up and looking for trouble, they can cause absolute mayhem. A lot of them are on their first night out after weeks at sea, so it's understandable they want to get hammered, but it often spills over. It's just accepted as a part of the night out on Union St. 2. Swansea may have some rough areas, but nowhere you wouldn't feel safe walking through. Can't say the same about Devonport. 3. Cornwall is near Plymouth, it's not in Plymouth, as the locals seem to think. Weird when it's a county. They don't have any beaches as such, just docks (which to be fair are nicely done out with pubs and bars, probably closer to Cardiff Bay than the marina). 4. Home Park is built in a large area of parkland, probably about the size of Singleton. Very nice for a stroll on a Sunday afternoon, but terrifying to get through if you are an away fan and the taxi driver has dropped you there because 'the traffic will be a nightmare to get to the main entrance, just don't let on you are a Swansea fan' 5. There is an anti-student 'local town for local people' vibe amongst a lot of the locals. Most are friendly, but you can sense an atmosphere in some parts of the city centre. Maybe Swansea has this too, but I've certainly never noticed it.

Well done for writing that, it saved me. I am going back to Plymouth for the first time in about 25 years in January and looking forward to walking aroung the Barbican and Plymouth Hoe and most of all Union Street. When I wrote my Master's Thesis I used Plymouth as a comparison to Swansea as they are both similar cities. I personally think Swansea is the better place. Paul, there is a HMS Dolphin facebook page. Yes, I have walked to Home park on several occasions. The last time in a group of around 150. We got attacked several times, but our numbers were enough to put them off, and the police dog escort took chunks out of a few of them too. They had already tried attacking us in a pub. The police had blocked it off though and allowed a few buses to meet there. The natives can be less than friendly. But having been to many places, following the Swans, we are far from the worst hometown.

Many urban messes have pleasant countryside around them, including Sunderland and Middlesboro. For a visiting fan, its the environs around the Stadium than count
