You're rich if you earn £70,000 a year 00:08 - Apr 22 with 9369 viewsGlyn1

That's according to the Labour Party anyway. Apparently that puts you in the top 5 per cent of wage earners in this country. Sounds right to me but people on Radio 5 have been whinging that they get that and are just average. Struggling in fact. Any thoughts?

The sun, the mail preach envy and hate, JC hadn't made the housing market what it is, that goes back to you know who and then this current govt/ successive govts who alow private landlords drive up prices to ridiculous prices, I for one don't envy youngsters today starting out in the housing market.
At least JC is prepared to take this on and at least try to make housing affordable

Well off isn't rich though is it. ''Rich'' was the word used here.

48k a year after tax. More than a quarter of that is rent for a year in London. Another quarter would be bills, council tax and food.

Means you will probably be able to put away £1500 into savings each month and live comfortably. If you are paying for a family then more like £500 a month to put away into savings.

Its hardly rich. Better off than a lot of people yes. But having to save 2 years solid before earning an average Premier League footballers 7 day wage doesn't constitute as rich to me.

This is why I can never be a supporter of labour or socialist politics and why I'll remain centrist liberal.

The mentality on this thread is full of spite and envy. Someone earning 70k a year is either in the S.East and pretty much getting by or they're someone who has done well in life, worked hard and paid a lot of tax in the system. Probably minimal use of the State so therefore a net benefit.

I want more people to be earning good money, I want people to succeed in life and be encouraged to succeed. I don't want this constant mentality of trying to drag everyone down to your level.

Labour will never get it, people to get on in life - that doesn't make them evil, it makes them hard working and want the best for their family.

That would imply people are choosing JSA as a career choice.

The policy itself is envy, if you support it you're envious. You want to Rob Paul to pay Peter.

Grown up politics would state we having a funding crisis in the NHS and EVERYONE will have to pay more tax. That I can respect, that makes economic and social sense.

It's the tone of the replies like epaul in his usual articulate outburst that strikes the chord for me.

Corbin is promoting a class war of them and us, the haves and have nots.

I've a few nice things but not as many as others . I'm not envious . I'm quite content

Corbyn is setting people againgst people ,viz those who earn sY 20 k and those 70k.

I earned regularly over 75 k in my last employment . I earned far more than plod . I had no basic .

It's also bad for productivity because many jobs these days have an incentive structure.

If you increase tax, you reduce incentive to work.

What does that equal less growth - less tax revenue.

Duh

Last job I had I worked hard up to the higher tax threshold then eased off .

If people are taxed thus then they will see little point in putting the effort in .

Classic socialism where the higher laid are crucified to subsidise lazy feckers who often don't work hard or long enough

Too many believe the world oshe's them a living

Too many believe the State should give them a Ouse keep their kids ...for life

What Corbyn should be suggesting is ending the Royal Largesse and have the civil list ,or whatever it is now, restricted to the Monarch and heir .

Absolute rubbish, I certainly don't condone living off JSA as a career choice , I agree it's a safety net, , I've worked since I was 11 years old starting with paper rounds, I've got 7 more years of contributions to qualify for a full state pension.

I had no choice but to claim JSA once between jobs whilst actively seeking work. I think I'm quite right that someone complaining of struggle earning 70k a year is ridiculous when people are earning low incomes and having to use food banks and claim in work benefits, there's the tories for you, they've tarred all those out of work as benefit scroungers aided abd abeted by the right wing press. My JSA quote was just an example of what struggle can really be for some.

Whilst I don't mind paying more tax to help out those more genuinely needy and the NHS, how about we renationalise it seeing as so much of it has been given to the tories chums

The hair and the beard have gone I am now conforming to society, tis a sad day The b*stards are coming back though

You are highlighting the fact that some are on the bones of their arse and others are in a far better position. I don't think you will find anyone disagreeing.

But the question is ''does 48k after tax make you RICH''. Not if some people would love to be on that, not if 48k after tax is loads more than some... but does it make you rich.

No is the answer from people who earn it.

It's because none of them have ever really worked, for the most part.

Most go down the degree ( granted not an option in Corbyn's case ) followed by union soft job priming them for a job within Labour. There are exceptions sure... but look at Corbyn's son, Sebastian.

Employed as a researcher for John McDonnell. Worked on the leadership campaign for Corbyn Sr, getting paid for both roles. Labour now looking for a nice seat to parachute him into.

It's nice to see Labour practising that meritocracy Corbyn Sr claims to want... for other people's kids...

Wow, 70K is rich, just wow.

It's not the wage you earn but the amount of floating cash you have at the end of the week that makes you rich.

Yes 70K is better than 35K which is better than the breadline but it's all relative.

70K would still mean a mortgage (a higher one in a nicer area perhaps), car loan and everything else that you have to pay for.

People on 70K can still struggle and the outgoing payments that needs to be serviced each month can still put excessive pressure on people and the absolute need to keep that job. Any change in status can mean disaster, just the same as any other people who maybe earn less.
