I understand your reasoning there. What do you think we could do to make sure we don't get overrun down the middle?

We'll need to go 4-5-1 against Wrexham so we don't get over run. Absolutely can't let Field go. We probably will knowing us. I'd have field and Hayden to hold the midfield and Madsen a bit further forward.

Madsen
at 16:53 21 Jan 2026

He is our most improved player and as it stands, our only playmaker. His fitness has improved dramatically this season and he's benefited from playing week in week out. Is he as good as someone like Bannan? No, not yet, but he's certainly a player that now gets around the pitch swiftly and isn't afraid to get stuck in. He is the closest 'style' of player we've had to Faurlin but he is slightly hampered by not having that many creative players around him.

That said, one thing I have noticed with Dembele is that whenever he wonders into the middle part of the pitch, his passing awareness and reading of the game seems to be notably better than when he's on the wing.

Surely we have to keep hold of Field? He can play LB, DMF, MF etc. Offload or loan him now would be suicide surely? I don't know why but I always feel we are more stable with him on the pitch. Him and Hayden make a big difference to the middle of the park.

There's a point in the second half where I think Madsen gets dragged to the ground over a 7-8 yard distance just outside the box that the ref waves on. Ref obviously blinded by the wind and rain on that one.

FA Youth Cup v Brighton

Hassan looks like a real prospect. Built like a 1970s number 9 already and a very good finisher.

I have a horrible habit of tipping players to step up and then seeing them let go at the end of the season.

I hope Hassan can come through the ranks because he's been very impressive at youth level.

The problem is we don't really have another Madsen, ball playing player available. Even Chair is not a like for like player. We need to find or unearth a Barry Bannan style player. Or even steal 36 year old Bannan from the clutches of Millwall or a team north of the border, as has been rumoured.

Madsen is the closest player we've had to Faurlin in a while, in that he has tried to play a quarter back style role. We don't seem to have another playmaker in the squad or an Eze/Taarabt type talent coming through.

If we are going to unlock more defences, service our forwards and our wide players we need to find a playmaker from somewhere.

Gaffer on tonight's draw

We're on 40 points after 28 games lad. Take it easy!

I've duplicated the thread because you relentlessly bash the manager, you've taken a swipe at our commentator, and it's just getting f*cking boring!

Gaffer on tonight's draw
at 22:59 20 Jan 2026

Meanwhile, as an antidote to other posts, having been out in this weather tonight not playing football it's been pretty crap.

On the positive side a typical Rangers, like the teams I have watched over many years, would have lost that tonight.

We've played a better than usual Stoke away and got a point and a not very good but potential banana skin Oxford away and got a point. Zero goals scored but zero goals conceded.

May sanity endure.

Knee injury apparently. Could be a bad one. Our left backs are cursed.

I think we seem to hit the first man so often that perhaps we should station one of our players between the box and the corner flag so it hits one of our own?

Is the season over?
at 22:34 20 Jan 2026

We've been very unlucky in that we had a virtually fully fit squad and in the space of a month half of it has been wiped out.

Meanwhile we're on 40 points... in January! I mean that's almost open top bus parade territory given the last 3 seasons.

No doubt I'll get my head kicked in for saying that.

I rate Bennie. I think the kid needs matches. Edwards will start Saturday and get plenty of time. Vale and Morgan will get more time.

Fortunately it only lasts as long as it takes to boil a kettle and make a cuppa. By the time you come back it's over.

Team for Oxford?
at 17:47 20 Jan 2026

I remember watching Kolli in the dev squad and he used to come deep and carry the ball through the middle. He's far further forward for the senior team so I guess still adapting to that position. I like him.

January transfer rumours

Barry Bannan at 36 would be a good fit for us, even for half a season. Anything to stop us playing against him. Would be like the very brief Ardiles cameo we had many years ago.

I see Birmingham have signed August Priske. 21 year old goal machine. Must have cost them a small fortune as half of Europe's been after him.
