Talks have begun regarding a potential return to Wigan Athletic for Queens Park Rangers defender James Perch (above, left), the Sun reports (Monday edition, page 49).

I would probably keep him for cover...

Season long on an so no recalls allowed.

Looking poor in one game does not mean he is no good at LB anymore. If we wrote off everyone who didn't look great against Swindon, we'd have no squad players left at all.

Many saying sell and get a specialist RB in but really what does that mean? At this level Onuoha is undisputed first choice, so competition is unlikely; yet if we sign someone young to develop then that effectively closes the door on Furlong further down the line. I'm no fan of Perch (and lest we forget this is probably a made-up story) but it's more or less not worth selling him unless they offer a fee too good to turn down and we also just so happen to have an unambitious jobbing back up player (Hughes, Onyewu style) in mind and available. It's all quite tenuous.

The one option I can think of that I might fancy is Nathan Byrne, out of favour at Wolves - right wing back (ie not much of a defender) but could cover both Onuoha and Ngbakoto. Also best mates with Luongo and Gladwin. Think if the club liked him they'd have signed him the first time round though.

If he can be replaced by someone younger then great. It wasn't even half a season of good form was it? More like a dozen games after several months of total dross. Furlong and Kpekawa are capable squad players IMO. Robinson is still to come back albeit not the most reliable. I know nothing of Mawson beyond his Wikipedia profile but it's enough to convince he's at least no worse than Perch and probably cheaper.

Saw Mawson play for Maidenhead a few times a couple of years back. Was ok for the level but surprised how much he has moved on from that.

Don't think that's the case anymore.

With the size of our squad, and our new financial parameters, I don't think we can really be selling anyone tbh

Experienced and versatile squad player able to slot into both full back positions and more, covering from the bench but with a good professional attitude. Yeah, let's bin him off.

Even if we were to buy a right back, they're not going to be playing - clearly the manager wants Onuoha there.

he may have a good attitude but that doesn't make him a good player
if we were to sell Perch and say bring in a Tavernier from Rangers or Byrne from Wolves
players who can play at full back or as a wide man then id be more than happy than keeping hold of Perch

And Bowles is onside, Swinburne has come rushing out of his goal , what can Bowles do here , onto the left foot no, on to the right foot That’s there that’s two, and that’s Bowles Brian Moore

Yes I think most of us know what "experienced and versatile" really means here.

Tavernier couldn't get into the Wigan team when Perch was their player of the year. Not sure the Scottish Championship is much preparation for the real one.

Sometimes you need to take a step down to come back up look at a player like Jon Walters he was deemed hopeless and a journeyman until he went to Ipswich and stoke
scott dann was another who was bombed out on loan from Walsall to conference
would you have said Delaney or Puncheon would be established prem stars after playing for us , even Andros Townsend who has had about 11 loan clubs has finally found what it takes
Tavernier didn't have the best of starts at Wigan but he seems to have re invented himself at Rangers and at 24 he is starting to hit his peak
is Perch really the answer at RB, LB, CB or CM ? he may be versatile but that doesn't mean he should stay here if he isn't all that
if we could get say a Byrne or Tavernier in we would have players who could solve our attacking wide issues and cover fullback to a good standard if the need arises

And Bowles is onside, Swinburne has come rushing out of his goal , what can Bowles do here , onto the left foot no, on to the right foot That’s there that’s two, and that’s Bowles Brian Moore

I like Perch but if we get a good offer for him then sell him

Hi,
I think the point is if we sold Caulker, Ned with Lynch injured would move to CB as his proper position. However deals do not always line up in the perfect way and if we are likely to sell Perch before then we need to be prepared.

I would rather we have a new RB coming inadvance, younger and challenging Ned even if Caulker is not sold. Bringing a long term challenge to Ned and Furlong. Ned is not getting any younger as well. So, long term this would be a good move for all parties.

I suspect we must do this all in advance as Caulker may go at the end of the August when we have no time to move for a RB. Use the money from Perch to get a new RB in now and mitigate the risks involved with Caulker leaving at the worst time ala Remy style.

Wouldn't argue with any of that, and if we were looking for a first choice RB they would definitely be names to think about. But it's all a bit beside the point, isn't it? The manager obviously wants Onuoha in the team and playing RB, so realistically all we're looking for is an understudy.

There's an argument that should have been Furlong, but he's going to develop more with a season in League One under his belt than sitting on our bench.

I don't think Perch is good enough to be first choice anything, but if the question is 'who can cover a number of positions at once from the bench without getting in a younger player's way?' then he probably is the answer.

Perch on 16:33 - Aug 16 with 1674 viewsDannytheR

But Lynch isn't going to be injured long, so even if Caulker is sold, he'll just slot in at CB alongside Hall when he's back. That was probably the Plan A when he was bought and before Caulker came back revitalised anyway.

So that leaves Ned playing RB unless there's a real injury crisis. And he's only 29, so I can't see how another young RB as his understudy helps us unless we don't think Furlong is going to be ready as a regular in a couple of years time.
