Preview: MK Dons (A)

Blackpool will be looking to make it six games unbeaten and three straight away league victories, in a trip MK Dons on Tuesday evening.

The Seasiders haven’t suffered defeat since the 2-0 loss at Ipswich at the start of February, going on to pick up 11 points from a possible 15 after that with victories over Rochdale, Portsmouth and Charlton Athletic followed by recent home draws to Crewe Alexandra and AFC Wimbledon.

Despite conceding late goals to Crewe and Wimbledon, the Seasiders have been solid in defence throughout the season, with Sunderland the only side to have conceded fewer goals so far this season.

Team News:

Daniel Gretarsson has resumed team training following a lengthy spell on the sidelines and will be eased into the team over the coming weeks to build up his fitness. Marvin Ekpiteta and Keshi Anderson remain sidelined whilst Gary Madine continues his recovery.

Last Time We Met:

Sullay Kaikai’s goal secured all three points in the reverse fixture at Bloomfield Road in October. Blackpool’s last visit to Stadium MK was nearly three years ago, in a 0-0 draw.

The Key Player: Scott Fraser

Fraser joined MK Dons on a two-year-deal from Burton Albion in September 2020. A product of Dundee United’s Academy, the 25-year-old made close to 100 appearances for the Scottish side before a move to England in 2018 to Burton.

A two year period at the Pirelli Stadium was followed by a move to Stadium MK, with Fraser having nine goals and six assists to his name so far this season.

Neil Critchley:

“MK Dons play some good football and keep the ball extremely well. They’re not in a good moment of form at the moment, but prior to that, they did go on a really good run of results. If you look at their side, they have some tremendous quality, so I wouldn't expect their dip in form to continue.

"We'll go there with a plan and we'll be ready."

Dougall must still be recovering from his bout of covid.

In many cases it takes an unusually long time to get yourself 100% right.

Him and Stewart, although similar in style, are ideal partners as the 2 defensive mids in a 4-2-3-1.

Nearly all the players have good technique and the team looks well balanced except for Ward / Kaikai / Embleton all being right footers.

We've got to get this type of system working as best we can and recruit the missing ingredient (number 9) for next season.

Analysis

On the back of conceding so late on against AFC Wimbledon on Saturday, Neil Critchley opts to freshen things up by making four changes.

Jordan Thorniley is replaced by Luke Garbutt, which sees James Husband shift over from left-back into the centre of defence.

Elsewhere, Saturday’s goalscorer Ellis Simms is given a breather, dropping down to the bench as the Seasiders revert to a 4-2-3-1 formation.

This sees Sunderland loanee Elliot Embleton come into the side to play in a number 10 role behind lone striker Jerry Yates, with Grant Ward and Sullay Kaikai on the flanks either side of him.

Demetri Mitchell and CJ Hamilton are the two to make way for Ward and Kaikai, while Daniel Gretarsson, Marvin Ekpiteta, Keshi Anderson and Gary Madine all remain sidelined.
