Dale World Cup Players 11:11 - Jun 7 with 4411 viewsBainesy15

Since it's worryingly quiet at the COA, anyone know which Dale/ex-Dale players have made a world cup appearance? I'll count Rhys Norrington-Davies, even if it hasn't actually happened yet...

Leo Bertos was in the New Zealand squad for the 2010 world cup and played in all 3 group games.

They drew all 3 games and finished 3rd in their group above Italy in 4th.

Rickie Lambert for England in 2014 - seem to remember he made a couple of sub appearances?

Only unbeaten team in world cup history if my pointless trivia serves me well?

Craig Dawson playing for Great Britain in the Olympics is probably one of the more niche international appearances by an ex player.

Sanchez has a chance as well this time if we're counting loanees.

What worries you about it being quiet at the club?

I thought that.

June (early June especially) is always quiet whilst staff take a well earned break.

It's been quite loud at the club with the pitch work going on! There has also been the announcement of a few friendlies recently. There will always be plenty going on behind the scenes.

Most players will be on holiday and/or their agents will be touting round their services for better deals therefore it will be quite on the transfer front.

You must have suffered more than most during the BBM years and most of our home games last year then!

Up the Dale - NOT for sale!

Ted Burgin was back up goalie in the 1954 world cup in Switzerland but didnt appear in a game. That was during his time at Sheff United, before he joined Dale

Also Gordon Strachan, who played in two WC finals, and whose son Craig played 10 minutes as a late sub for Dale in 2003.

Not quite a first team player, but IIRC, Danny Donachie, the son of Scotland's Willie Donachie, was a reserve teamer at Dale.

Also, Paul Sturrock, father of Blair Sturrock, played for Scotland in the 1986 World Cup.

I have been trying to see if Eddie Grey ever played in a World Cup, but can't find it.

Edit looks like he missed the 1974 World Cup through injury.

I think I'm right is saying that Eddie Gray perhaps surprisingly only played around 15 games in total for Scotland.
Mainly due to injuries.

Alan McLoughlin played in a couple of World Cup Finals teams for the ROI, and later played for Dale.

(To save anyone else googling, Dean Walling's games for St Kitts were in the CONCACAF Gold Cup, not the World Cup qualifiers.)

Here's another that didn't. Whilst he played a dozen times for Scotland, Derek Parlane did not make either the '74 or '78 World Cup squads.

Kangana Lord Ndiwa played 2 games for the Democratic Republic of the Congo, which is more appearances than at most clubs he played for.
