Loan Watch 19:37 - Aug 22 with 4559 viewsspell_chekker

Not something I feel like doing every week but still, it's interesting to check up on the players we've loaned out from time to time.

We've currently got 4 players out on loan, all to L1 clubs and all for the full season.

They are:

Reece James to Sheffield Wednesday
Owen Dale to Portsmouth
Oliver Casey to Forest Green Rovers
Douglas Tharme to Accrington Stanley

There are also 1 or 2 development squad players out on loan but I can't remember whom nor where to.

Hoping this thread is going to be a joint effort.

An article from the club's website:

Loan Watch: Season so far

After the January transfer window has come to a close, Blackpool have six players loaned out until the end of the season, with five of them playing in League One and one appearing in League Two.

Below is an overview of how each of their seasons are going so far and how the Tangerine men have crossed paths throughout the campaign and even some remarkable coincidental parallels.

REECE JAMES

James has made 23 appearances in all competitions for Sheffield Wednesday this season. The defender has contributed to keeping clean sheets in over half of his games, 12. Whilst also notching three assists in that time.

However, the 29-year-old last featured a month ago - January 14th, against Wycombe Wanderers, where he had to be taken off just before full-time with an injury that has seen him sidelined since.

James is close to recovery though as Wednesday boss, Darren Moore, confirmed the only reason he missed their last game against Ipswich Town was because he felt a bit of soreness the day before - so he decided not to risk him.

He has experienced a few periods of injury during his loan period, but whenever he is fully fit he is a guaranteed starter in Moore's - having started 19 of his 23 appearances for the League One side.

The Englishman has been used in several different positions under Moore, with James being deployed as a centre-back, left-back, and he was even handed the role of left-wing-back in his final game before injury.

OWEN DALE

Dale has racked up a total of 2,505 minutes for Portsmouth this campaign - with those minutes coming across 33 appearances with 29 starts in total.

The right-winger scored on his second League start for Portsmouth - which helped them to a 3-1 win against Bristol Rovers.

Since then the 24-year-old hasn't managed to scratch his name on the scoresheet but he's turned to providing instead as he has added four assists to his name.

Dale completed just short of the full 90 minutes when Portsmouth narrowly lost 1-0 to Premier League side, Tottenham Hotspur, in the FA Cup Third Round.

MATTY VIRTUE

Virtue's time at Lincoln City was going incredibly well until he, unfortunately, tore his hamstring in their 1-1 draw against Ipswich. Lincoln boss, Mark Kennedy, was "bitterly disappointed" at Virtue's lengthy period on the sidelines.

After being subbed on at half-time for his debut against Cambridge United on September 3rd, Virtue had played every single minute of Lincoln's league campaign.

Just like James' Wednesday, Southampton knocked Lincoln out of the EFL Cup - Virtue's Lincoln, got one round further though as they progressed as far as the fourth round.

Once again, as a happy coincidence, just like Dale, on his second league start for Lincoln, Virtue helped his new side to a thrilling 6-3 away win against Bristol Rovers by scoring his only goal for the club - the 25-year-old also racked up his only assist of the season in that game as well.

Virtue was ruled out for 10 weeks just after the turn of the New Year - wishing him a speedy and healthy recovery.

OLIVER CASEY

Casey has been the busiest of Blackpool's players that are out on loan. The centre-half has made 36 appearances for League One side Forest Green Rovers - playing a total of 2,807 minutes of football.

The 22-year-old scored his only goal of the season so far in the EFL Trophy in a 3-1 win against Southampton B.

Other than a spell throughout October where Casey was an unused substitute four times in six games - the defender has very nearly been an ever-present at the back for Rovers - starting every game in the league, but one, since then.

DOUG THARME

Tharme has played just over 2,000 minutes for Accrington Stanley this season - appearing for John Coleman's side 25 times.

The centre-half has struggled to get into a string of games since the start of December due to suffering a couple of injuries.

The latest of which saw him stretchered off in injury time against Casey's Lincoln City on February 4th. Tharme was taken away in an ambulance and is still recovering.

Before this unfortunate incident, other than his first appearance for the club, Tharme had started every game he was available for - whilst completing the full 90 minutes on all but seven occasions.

Tharme has managed to find the back of the net once, securing all three points for Accrington in a 1-0 win away to Cambridge.

TAYT TRUSTY

Trusty made the loan move to Hartlepool United on 27th January. 24 hours later the 19-year-old was thrown straight into the action as he was named in the starting XI ahead of his debut.

Since then the attacking midfielder has appeared in both of Hartlepool's fixtures, starting once again on February 4th in their 1-0 win against Doncaster Rovers,

He was then used as a substitute in their 2-2 draw against Sutton United.

Virtue at Lincoln: 6th week out injured. Lincoln won 1 - 0 at home to Bristol Rovers. Grant Ward played for Bristol at the centre of a midfield 3 (4-3-3).

Dale at Portsmouth: Played on the right of a front 3 (4-3-3) and was subbed after 68 mins as Portsmouth went down 3-1 away at more or less nailed on automatic Plymouth. Ryan Hardie scored for Plymouth.

James at Sheffield Wednesday: James was still out injured as automatic (more or less certainties) Wednesday hit a blip in the road with a 2-2 draw away at 4th placed Ipswich. Ipswich missed a pen which must see their chances of catching Wednesday vastly reduced.

Casey at Forest Green: Played the full match as the right centre half in a back 4 in the 1 - relegation battle draw away at Morecambe. Forest Green remain bottom while Morecambe sit 4th from bottom (1 point adrift with a game in hand).

Tharme at Accrington: Out injured after being stretchered off last week against Lincoln with a head injury. Accrington drew 0 - away at Cheltenham in another relegation battle leaving them 3rd from bottom (2 points adrift with 2 matches in hand).

Tayt Trusty at Hartlepool: Trusty was on the bench and came on in the 77th minute replacing a central midfielder. Hartlepool drew 2-2 at home to Sutton United. Ex 'Pool loanee Dan Kemp scored for Hartlepool and ex left back David Ferguson played. Hartlepool remain in a precarious position just above the drop zone.

Virtue at Lincoln: His 6th week out with injury. Lincoln drew 0 - 0 at home with Portsmouth.

Dale at Portsmouth: Played an ever so slightly different role on the right of the advanced midfield in a 4-2-3-1 instead of on the right of the attack in a 4-3-3. Started and was again subbed for Pigott after 59 mins.

James at Sheffield Wednesday: James was straight back in top of the table Wednesday's team after recovering from injury. He played the full match and had the assist for Wednesday's first goal. Wednesday won 5 - 2 at home against MK Dons.

James' assist: He's number 33. Fast forward to 20 seconds. Is it a hoof or a raking 60 yard Hollywood ball?

Casey at Forest Green: Casey played the full match as the right centre half in a back 4. Whipping boys Forest Green are rock bottom and a million miles from safety following their 4 - 0 away defeat at Ipswich.

Tharme at Accrington: Tharme's still out after his head injury. Accrington hauled themselves out of the relegation spots with a good 1 - 0 home win against 8th place Shrewsbury. Still with games in hand, they look in decent shape especially after their shrew out of contract signing of ex Burnley and Lyon hopeful, midfielder Anthony Mancini.

Trusty at Hartlepool: Trusty was an unused sub. Hartlepool kept their heads, only just, above water with a 2 - 2 draw away at Wimbledon. Their equaliser coming in the 6th minute of added time. Dan Kemp got Hartlepool's goals with one assist coming from David Fergusen.

Virtue at Lincoln: Didn't feature and has now spent 7 weeks on the treatment table (10 weeks was the predicted period of his absence). Lincoln drew 1 - 1 away at Forest Green and are playing tonight at home to MK Dons (still no Virtue in the squad).

Dale at Portsmouth: Dale started the match on the right of the three advanced midfielders and was subbed after 85 mins. Despite Portsmouth's 4 - 0 home win against Cheltenham, Dale didn't score and didn't assist - it's been a while now. Have Portsmouth hit for after their south coast drubbing against Plymouth? Dale started tonight at home to Bolton.

James at Sheffield Wednesday: James not named in the squad - last week's comeback match perhaps a bit too early? He's been out a few times this season with niggles. Wednesday continued to sweep all before them with a 1 - 0 win away at Charlton. They're now clear at the top with a game in hand.

Casey at Forest Green: Played the whole match as the right centre half in a back 4. Forest Green won a point - the first for Duncan Disorderly??

Tharme at Accrington: Still not back after his head injury. Accrington drew 0 - 0 away at Burton but still slipped back into the relegation places on goal difference to Morecambe.

Trusty at Hartlepool: Not in the squad. Dan Kemp on target again with another 2 goals as Hartlepool drew 3 - 3 at home to Walsall. Hartlepool are just out of the relegation places but have played 3 games more than Crawley.

Midweek update.

Virtue at Lincoln: Still out injured. 1 - 1 home draw against MK Dons. Ethan Robson started (and was subbed) for MK Dons, He played just behind the lone striker in the middle of 3 advanced midfielders in a 4 - 2 - 3 - 1 set up. Kaikai also started and was played just to the right of Robson.

Dale at Portsmouth: Dale played the full match on the right of an advanced three (same as Kaikai for MK Dons). Too little too late but Portsmouth are now putting a handy run together as they beat Bolton 3 - 1 at Fratton Park. Still no more goals and assists for Dale.

Vrtue at Lincoln: Still out injured. Lincoln won 1 - 0 at home to Oxford despite Cameron Brannagan playing for the visitors.

Dale at Portsmouth: Dale started and was subbed in the 89th minute. He again played on the right of an advanced midfield 3 in Portsmouth's now familiar 4-2-3-1.Dale was awarded a yellow and was credited with an assist. Portsmouth's winning run continued with a 1 - 0 away win at Cambridge.

FF to 55 secs: Good shot at goal by Dale.
FF 1m10s for his assist.

James at Sheffield Wednesday: James still missing from the match day squad. Another win for Wednesday (1 - 0 at home to Peterborough) makes automatic promotion a mere formality.

Casey at Forest Green: Casey started the match as the right centre half in a back 4 and was sent off after 43 minutes after being shown a straight red. Casey left an imprint of his studs on the Accrington player's thigh - Forest Green were winning 1 - 0 at the time but Accrington scored against the 10 men from the resulting free kick and went on to win the game. Forest Green are now all but down bar the shouting as they lost 2 - 1 away to fellow strugglers Accrington.

FF to 4m05s for the Casey challenge.

Tharme at Accrington: Tharme was back in the fold as an unused sub. Accy's 2 - 1 home win against Forest Green lifts them out of the relegation zone (they've also got 2 games in hand).

Trusty at Hartlepool: Not in the match day squad. Hartlepool's 1 - 1 away draw at Tranmere keeps them just above the dreaded drop zone (they've played 2 games more). Dan Kemp assisted.

Virtue at Lincoln: Virtue stepped up his comeback from injury and started the match in the centre of midfield (3-4-3) before being subbed after 63 mins. Lincoln lost 2 - 1 away at Exeter.

Dale at Portsmouth: A change of role for Dale who started the match as a left winger in a 4-4-2. He was subbed after 65 minutes as Portsmouth went down 1 - 0 at home to Sheffield Wednesday.

James at Sheffield Wednesday: Back in the squad as an unused sub in Wednesday's 1 - 0 away win at Portsmouth. One of Wednesday's back 3 got his marching orders which might present a timely chance for James to reclaim his starting berth.

Casey at Forest Green: Casey's serving a ban (probably 3 matches) after his red at Accrington last week. Forest Green lost 3 - 1 at home to Grant Ward's Bristol Rovers. I think Duncan Disorderly's only managed 1 draw so far in his wretched introduction to management.

Tharme at Accrington: Tharme was back in the starting line up and played the full match at the centre of a back 3, picking a yellow up in the process. In their battle to retain L1 status Accy ground out a useful 1 - 1 away point at Charlton.

Trusty at Hartlepool: Trusty has disappeared without trace at Hartlepool since Keith Curle was replaced as manager. Hartlepool drew 1 - 1 at home to Northampton and remain hovering precariously above the drop into the conference.

Virtue at Lincoln: Started the match and ws again subbed after 65 with the score at 0 - 1 to Peterborough. Lincoln went on to concede another 2 an lose their home match 3 - 0.

Dale at Portsmouth: Came on as a sub after 59 mins. Portsmouth won 2 - 0 away at Bristol Rovers. Portsmouth's second was from a pen which was given away by Bristol Rovers' Calum MacDonald.

James at Sheffield Wednesday: James' rehabilitation continued as he played the first half before being subbed as over 29,000 watched Wednesday draw 1 - 1 at home with Bolton.

Casey at Forest Green: Casey was still serving out his ban as Forest Green went down 2 - 0 away at Plymouth. Their GD is a staggering -41 in this comedy sketch of a season.

Tharme at Accrington: Tharme played the wole match in the centre of a back 3 as Accrington lost a vital six pointer at home to MK Dons. Kaikai overlapped and got round the back of the Accrington defence to net the winner.

Trusty at Hartlepool: Again no sign of Trusty. A 2 - 2 away draw in front of over 18,000 at Bradford sees Hartlepool maintain some hope in their battle for survival in the football league. Another goal from Dan Kemp.

Tharme at Accrington: Not in the squad as Michael Nottingham was the the lynchpin of Accrington's back 3. Accrington's survival hopes were dealt a blow with a 2 - 0 home defeat to Plymouth. Ryan Hardie assisted one of the goals.

Dale at Portsmouth: Played the full match in the number 10 role behind Colby Bishop in a 4-2-3-1 set up. No goal an,d no assists in Portsmouth's 2-2 draw at home to Port Vale.

James at Sheffield Wednesday: Started on the left of a back 3 and played 80 mins before being subbed. Yellow carded. Wednesday became the laughing stock with a 1 - 0 away loss at Forest Green.

Casey at Forest Green: Serving the last match of his ban (I think) after his sending off for violent conduct at Accrington. Missed out on Forest Green's glory glory freak result.

Tharme at Accrington: Still out with injury. Alarm bells really starting to ring for Accrington after their 5 - 0 away defeat at Exeter.

Trusty at Hartlepool: Not in the match day squad again. Injured or out of favour? Another draw, this time 1-1 at home to Orient sees Hartlepool desperately clinging on to league status.

Moore at Doncaster: The emergency 7 day loan has expired and I'd imagine Moore is now back at Blackpool. Doncaster conceded 2 in a 2 - 0 home loss to Northampton.

Virtue at Lincoln: Played the whole game on the right of a middle three as Lincoln matched up to Sheffield Wednesday's El-Tel Christmas tree formation and got a very creditable 1 - 1 away draw.

James at Sheffield Wednesday: Was pushed further up the pitch and started on the left of a middle 3 in Wednesday's 5-3-2 formation. This put James directly in competition against Lincoln's Virtue. Subbed after 82 mins in this 1 - 1 stalemate. Wednesday's recent wobble sees them still, but only just, top even if somewhat precariously.?

Dale at Portsmouth: Played the full match on the right of a front 3. An eventful match for Dale who scored after 51 mins and also got a yellow. Portsmouth great run continued with a 1 - 0 home win against Forest Green. They're now knocking on the door of the play offs.

Fast forward to 45 secs to see Dale's towering header:

Casey at Forest Green: Back from suspension and played the whole match as the right centre half in a back 4 in the 1 - 0 away loss at Portsmouth. I can't tell but it could very well be Casey who was out jumped by Dale for the Portsmouth winner.

Tharme at Accrington: Accrington didn't have a game at the weekend.

Virtue at Lincoln:

Good Friday. Sub and came on after 75 minutes in Lincoln's 2-0 home win against Cheltenham.

Easter Monday. Started, yellow carded and subbed as Lincoln recorded an impressive 2-0 away win at high flying Plymouth.

James at Sheffield Wednesday:

Good Friday. Played the full match in Wednesday's 1-1 away draw at Oxford.

Easter Monday. Played in central midfield in a 3-4-3 and was subbed after 43 mins 'injury???) in Wednesday's 3-0 home win against Accrington. The win saw Wednesday regain top spot.

Dale at Portsmouth:

Good Friday. Started and was subbed deep into second half stoppage time. Portsmouth drew 1-1 away at MK Dons.

Easter Monday. Played the full match and saw yellow. Portsmouth's Easter stumble was confirmed with a goalless draw at home to Morecambe. Barring a miracle, the play offs will now be out of Portsmouth's reach.

Casey at Forest Green:

Good Friday. Played the full match in rock bottom Forest Green's routine 2-0 home defeat at the hands of Derby.

Easter Monday. Played the full match in a 2-0 away loss at Wycombe.

Tharme at Accrington:

Good Friday. Back in the starting line up and was replaced by Michael Nottingham after 73 mins. Accrington won 3-0 at home to Port Vale.

Easter Monday. Played the full match in a 3-0 defeat away at Sheffield Wednesday. The loss left Accrington in a perilous position in the relegation places behind Oxford and MK Dons. Their poor GD is also a bad sign. I think they'll go down.

Virtue at Lincoln: Started the match yellow carded in the 4th minute and subbed after 29 mins. The substitution was probably due to a tactical reshuffle after Lincoln had their keeper sent off. Ten man Lincoln won 3 - 2 at home to 9 man Port Vale (2 sent off!!).

James at Sheffield Wednesday: Not in the squad - injured against Accrington. Wednesday slip out of the automatics again with a 3- 2 away defeat at Burton.

Dale at Portsmouth: Started on the right of 3 advanced midfielders in a 4-2-3-1. Subbed after 65 mins. Portsmouth drew 1 - 1 away at Shrewsbury. Their 3rd consecutive draw leaves their play off hopes all but dead.

Casey at Forest Green: Played the entire match and got a yellow. Forest Green were mathematically relegated after their 5- 1 home loss to Barnsley. Their GD is currently standing at -51.

Tharme at Accrington: Started and was subbed after 42 mins (injured again ???). Michael Nottingham scored for Accrington but couldn't stop them going down 5 - 2 at home to Fleetwood. The defeat leaves them in desperate trouble in the relegation zone.

Casey at Forest Green: Played the full game as the right centre half in a back four as long since doomed Forest Green went down 3 - 1 away at Cheltenham.
