Chair's brilliance starts Cifuentes off with a point - Report on 16:57 - Nov 5 with 5723 viewsOldPedro

Good report - I live 'up north' so I've been to both the Huddersfield and Rotherham games. I was amazed at the difference between the two performances in terms of the team looking like they knew what they were trying to do as well as the style of football. I couldn't believe how much MC had managed to get over to the team in just a few days.

I feel much more optimistic after yesterday although I agree with Clive's point that we look short of goals and MC needs to find ways for different players to chip in.

We had a spell just after the goal of sustained possession and creating chances that I genuinely haven't seen since Beale was here. needed to get that second goal but i left quite happy with how we played and how we finished the game strongly.

Keep playing like that and results will come

I have to admit that when I read the first few paragraphs I thought that you were being slightly over-cautious, if not reserved in your praise for what I'd thought was a positive day.

But, by the end of it (and I read it again), I think you nailed a correct tone of cautious optimism.

Thanks, as ever.

I, like quite a few of us, feel suitably chastened and humbled by our support for Senor Cifuentes' predecessor, given how much more like an actual team our lot already looked yesterday.

The thing I like most about MC is that he already speaks with a well-balanced authority which you know means that the players won't be able to slack off or not stick 100% to the gameplan if they actually want to have any kind of the future with the club. In additon, his track record in Sweden and Norway should give the players the confidence to see that he clearly knows what he's talking about.

Elijah Dixon-Bonner's performance was a substantial plus, as we haven't had a player who really dominates that central midfield position and is mobile for so long, I can't even think of who he reminds me of.

Suddenly we look something like we should look again with the talent and experience we have in this squad, but like you said, Clive, we're going to have to reap the benefits of this quickly AND hope that 3 teams implode at the same time, which looks like at least one wish too many. The more realistic hope is that Senor Cifuentes sticks around next season, as that will give us a puncher's chance of ripping through League One at the first attempt.

His post match on the club site is spot on for tone and content IMO.

Ripping through League One?

Bollocks to that.

It's the 5th November. Sorry, E15 I think you're a great poster, genuinely, and I admired your enthusiasm for Ainsworth and also your tactical posts about how it didn't work out.

But. We're not in League One, and shouldn't talk about it.

We have to win two games more than the fourth-worst team in this division. A very poor division. Two games. That's all.

I'm not getting carried away with the improvement in our performance because I know nothing about Cifuentes, but yesterday was a good day. Yesterday we dropped two points from a winning position, but we found a way to play that suited our squad.

We're back in this.

League One?

I agree.

The line you quoted from him “the other teams will not wait for us” is a great line.
It doesn't tell players they're good, that they're bad, that they're unlucky, that they deserve more, or less, or pity...it's a simple truth.

some winnable ones coming up imo

Britstol City, Hull, Stoke and Plymouth at home
Norwich, Preston and Sheff Wed away

Southampton, Millwall and Ipswich over Christmas is tough but after that we have 4 home games in a row

Should be looking to pull away by the end of February before we start playing the top teams again

Agree with that. Get some home wins and a couple of draws from that next batch up to xmas and be clicking (and lucky with injuries) for that January home month which is the key to the season really.

Thanks for your kind words, Brian. Much appreciated, having taken some substantial stick for sticking up for GA at the start of the year in particular.

Nice touch to see the concern for him on one of the other threads.

Given your history of well-balanced viewpoints that speak of wisdom gained through years of measured analysis, I'm going to let myself be swept along with your energy and optimism.

I heard Jed Wallace on 5Live early last week telling Marti Cifuentes how highly he rates both Ilias Chair and Chris Willock, and its less than 3 years since we were beating Brentford with a team that had Field, Dykes, Willock and Chair in it.

I guess you're right -theoretically there's no reason why we can't get a run going. When you look at how fair we're behind Huddersfield at the moment though and th fact that our goal difference is so miserable, it just feels like we're about to start a 100m dash having given the rest of the division a 30m head start.

I think we are going to be ok. We have hope now. Two weeks ago we all knew where we were going.

Did I ever mention that I was in Minder?

Dave, you overlook one thing : since when have we won “ winnable games “? !

Cheers Clive,

The result is more important than the performance this week, but hopefully an improvement in the latter will give us a win!

My only disagreement with the report (from watching the last 60 minutes on a stream!) is that I don't think you've given the Rotherham 'keeper enough credit for the save from Dixon-Bonner.

My first reaction was the same as your's, but every time I've seen it since it get's better!

On a similar note - for Kelman's chance at the end he doesn't actually touch the ball, it goes off the defender (again very good reactions from the keeper!)

Monday morning, the sun is shining, and QPR didn't lose.

Agreed that we're a team lacking goals, but we're also a team that coughs up soft ones. If we can tighten up at the back and maybe get a clean sheet or two, that would help. The George Graham approach and all that.

I mean right now I'd happily take ten 1-0 wins although that might not be great for everyone's stress levels.

Were there signs/hope of us getting back our old Willock?

From the stream I thought he did ok holding the ball and linking play, but got the impression he is lacking that spring, snap, acceleration which together with his skill and strength enabled him to go past and away from defenders and put in very decent shots on goal from distance before his last hamstring injury. Don't know if he can get that back again?

Saw older brother Joe score a couple of decent goals in recent weeks, one thing they share is an unerring ability to shoot accurately from distant and find the corner of the net, this is what we have missed the most in his absence, athough Chair replicated this on Saturday.

I thought it was interesting how Martí seemingly played him in a deeper role. Whether that's because that's where he sees him best used or because he doesn't have that snap and acceleration until he gets match fit, it will be interesting to see.

QPR - "shit but local"

Yeah we were definitely less shite but we couldn't score in a brothel, Dykes was awful and a waste of space, surprised he didn't get taken off earlier.

Other teams won't be as wasteful as Rotherham, we are in huge trouble still and need a few wins quickly....

Maybe with a few games and match fitness, we will see. He'll be playing for his future, so if he wants to attract bidders he's going to need to perform.
