Sources: Lennon snubbed as Johnson rejects Celtic offer to agree terms with English club

Tommy Johnson has snubbed Celtic and Southend to become the new Blackpool head of recruitment, Football Insider understands.

Johnson’s former teammate Neil Lennon wanted him to take on a senior recruitment role in part of a new-look team headed by just-appointed Nicky Hammond.

A source with knowledge of Johnson’s situation has told Football Insider that he has rejected Celtic and is set to start work immediately at English League One club Blackpool in his new role.

The 48-year-old former Celtic, Aston Villa and England Under-21 striker has been appointed by the Tangerines’ new chief executive Ben Mansford.

It comes after Southend announced last week that they had been forced to abandon plans to appoint Henrik Larsson as their new manager, with Johnson and another ex-Bhoy Johan Mjallby in his team.

Johnson, who quit Nottingham Forest in the summer, was in line for the role of head of recruitment but pulled out at the last minute after contracts had been agreed.

Southend and Larsson were left infuriated by the decision of Johnson amid mystery over where he was headed and why he had spurned their offer.

His decision to head to Blackpool comes at a time when they are eighth in the division, while Southend are 22nd, with only cash-strapped Bolton Wanderers below them.

Celtic are flying high at the SPL summit once again, but Johnson won’t be reuniting with former teammate Lennon for now.

It's interesting to note that Mansford has been credited with making the appointment.

It'd seem to be a very good move if we've beaten Celtic to his signature.

Blackpool look set to appoint former Celtic striker Tommy Johnson as their new head of recruitment.

The 48-year-old had been set to join League One strugglers Southend United in a similar head of recruitment position.

Terms had been agreed for the former striker to link up with his ex-Celtic teammate Henrik Larsson, who had agreed to take on the vacant manager's job at Roots Hall according to reports.

However the deal, which also involved Johan Mjallby coming in as assistant manager, broke down at the last minute after Johnson had a change of heart.

The Gazette now understands Johnson is to fill a similar head of recruitment role at Bloomfield Road.

Southend, meanwhile, look likely to appoint former Macclesfield Town boss Sol Campbell as their new manager.

It has also been reported that Johnson has turned down the chance to return to Celtic to work in a senior recruitment position as part of a new-look team.

Johnson enjoyed an 18-year playing career where he played for the likes of Notts County, Derby County and Aston Villa, as well as Scottish giants Celtic.

He began scouting while coaching Northern Ireland's Under-23s, before going on to become a European scout at Cardiff City.

He went on to fill the head of player recruitment role at Blackburn Rovers, while most recently he was a senior UK scout with Premier League side Watford.

It comes after the recent appointments of Linton Brown as chief commercial officer and Ben Mansford as the club's new chief executive.

Good to see the back office appointments coming together.

Blackpool have named ex-Celtic forward Tommy Johnson as head of recruitment.

The 48-year-old had been close to becoming an assistant to another former Bhoys striker Henrik Larsson, if the Swede had become Southend's manager.

But the Shrimpers' talks with the pair, and former Celtic team-mate Johan Mjallby, ended when Johnson "accepted an alternative offer".

His new club has now been confirmed as Blackpool, who have also named Jonathan Gibson as head of technical scouting.

Gibson's arrival comes after 10 years working for West Bromwich Albion, including four years as the Baggies' head of performance analysis.

As well as winning a treble with Celtic, Johnson helped Aston Villa win the League Cup in 1996.

Since moving into coaching and scouting, he has held roles at Notts County, Leicester City, Northern Ireland's youth set-up, Cardiff City, Blackburn, Watford and Nottingham Forest.

Southend appointed former England defender Sol Campbell as their manager on Tuesday.

Finally confirmed.

It's interesting to see that Gibson's been appointed as well. Sadler must be really serious about recruitment.

A really good sign.

I can't find much on the internet about Gibson other than he spent nearly 12 years at WBA, working his way up from Recruitment Analyst, then to the position of Head of Performance Analysis, before serving as the Recruitment Manager for six and a half years.

He left West Brom in August of this year. I don't know why and don't care to read into it.

He studied at the University of Central Lancashire. Graduating in 2010, he has a Bachelor's Degree in Sports' Coaching.

Did I read somewhere that Simon Sadler was looking at recruitment being more data/stats driven? If so seems the Gibson appointment would fit that.

Blackpool have boosted their recruitment and scouting teams with the appointments of Tommy Johnson and Jonathan Gibson.

Former Celtic striker Johnson takes up the role of Head of Recruitment, on the back of holding previous scouting and recruitment positions with Cardiff City, Blackburn Rovers, Watford and Nottingham Forest.

He also enjoyed a 19-year career playing for the likes of Notts County and Aston Villa, as well as Scottish giants Celtic.

He moved into coaching with Notts County in 2007, prior to joining Leicester City as Chief Scout and then the Northern Ireland under-17 and under-21 setups as assistant manager.

Southend have since appointed Sol Campbell as their new manager.

Gibson, meanwhile, takes up the position of Head of Technical Scouting following 10 years with West Bromwich Albion.

Six of those years were spent as the Baggies’ Recruitment Manager and the other four as the club’s Head of Performance Analysis.

Owner Simon Sadler said: “I am pleased to welcome both Tommy and Jonathan to the club in what are very defined recruitment and scouting roles.

“From the outset, I have made clear that I want this to be a modern, progressive football club and I believe that, alongside the football expertise of our new CEO Ben Mansford, these appointments will form a structured recruitment setup that will support the manager and enable us to identify, monitor and sign players for the long-term.”

The news comes after the recent appointments of Linton Brown as chief commercial officer and Ben Mansford as the club's new chief executive.

With the new structure in place, the club has decided a Director of Football is not required.
