Barnsley coach Dale Tonge believes the freedom Blackpool will be able to play with at Oakwell this weekend will make them a dangerous opposition.

The Seasiders head to Yorkshire with little to play for other than personal pride and the chance to finish the season as high as possible.

Barnsley, on the other hand, sit second in the table and are chasing automatic promotion back to the Championship with just two games remaining.

Tonge, assistant coach at Barnsley, is expecting a tough encounter when they take on Terry McPhillips' men.

“They are hard to beat, dangerous on the counter and they have had good results against the top six," he told the Barnsley Chronicle.

“They are stress-free with the position they are in in the table so we’re expecting a really tough game.

"They have come through a lot of off-field things but they have managed it outstandingly.”

Should Barnsley avoid defeat against the Seasiders, it will mean Daniel Stendel's side will have gone the whole season without suffering defeat at home in the league.

“It’s been alluded to quite often throughout the season," Tonge added.

“It’s an added incentive but mainly we are focusing on three points and putting a performance on for the fans.

“The home record is something we can be proud of but it will pale in significance if we don’t win on Saturday.

“I am hoping Oakwell will be bouncing and I think a lot of fans will turn out.”

Barnsley: Oakwell
Capacity: 23,287 (all seated)
Club Nickname: The Tykes or Reds
Year Ground Opened: 1888
Undersoil Heating: Yes
Home Kit: Red and White

Record Attendance
40,255 v Stoke City
FA Cup 5th Round, 15th February 1936.

Modern All Seated Attendance Record
22,650 v Manchester City
Division One, 11th March 2000.

Average Attendance
2017-2018: 13,704 (Championship League)
2016-2017: 13,831 (Championship League)
2015-2016: 9,499 (League One)

WHAT IS THE OAKWELL FOOTBALL GROUND LIKE?

Approximately three sides of the Oakwell ground were redeveloped in the 1990's. On one side is the particularly attractive two-tiered covered East Stand running along one side of the pitch. Opened in March 1993, this stand has a capacity of 7,100. Opposite is the classic looking West Stand, part of which dates back to 1904. It was made all seated in the mid 1990's, but is only covered at the rear. On its roof is perched an ugly precarious looking television gantry which obscures a probably more attractive gable. At the Pontefract Road End (now named the CK Beckett Stand) is an all seated, covered stand for home supporters, which has a capacity of 4,500. This stand was opened in 1995. The other end, the North Stand, was previously an open terrace but is now a relatively new single tier, covered stand, housing around 6,000 fans. This is the most recent addition to the ground being opened in 1999 and has greatly enhanced the overall look of Oakwell. An unusual feature of the stadium is a purpose built stand for disabled supporters. This is a three floor structure that sits at the corner between the East and South Stands. There is also an electric scoreboard at one corner of the North Stand, on top of a security control room. The teams come out from one corner of the ground between the North and West Stands.

WHAT IS IT LIKE FOR VISITING SUPPORTERS?

Away fans are housed in the modern North Stand, at one end of the ground. This good sized covered stand is cantilevered, meaning that there are no supporting pillars to obstruct your view. The normal allocation for away supporters is 2,000 tickets and fans are normally housed on one side of this stand on the West side (towards the old Main Stand). If demand requires it, then most of this stand can be allocated, increasing the number of tickets available to 4,700 (the stand can actually hold 6,000 but the capacity has been reduced to keep a sizeable gap in-between the away fans and home fans located in the East Stand). The acoustics of the stand are not bad meaning that visiting fans can really make some noise. The facilities on the fair sized concourse are good and access is given to an adjacent open-air area if fans wish to smoke. Food on offer inside the ground includes; a range of Pukka Pies (£3.20), Sausage Rolls (£2.60), Burgers (£3.80) Hot Dogs (£3.80) and Chips (£2.60). Please note that the refreshment kiosks do not accept card payments and are cash only.

I found this club to be particularly friendly from the car park attendant to the programme seller. Even the P.A. announcer had a sense of humour (although a little optimistic), when he announced that perhaps the visiting fans would like to come up again to see the next Barnsley home game, so that we could see a decent game of football!

Prediction: TMc to knock a couple of Stendel's teeth out. and a 2-1 win for Blackpool. We can't have them going unbeaten at home all season.

It looks to us like Blackpool will do really well to find the back of the net against a Barnsley outfit who look likely to score a lot of goals. We’re going for a very comfortable 3-0 margin for Barnsley at the end of the game.

Blackpool has not beaten Barnsley away from home in 3 games. They are also unbeaten in their last 3 away games and have not won away from home for 2 games.

The previous league contest featuring the two was League One match day 23 on 22/12/2018 when the final score was Blackpool 0-1 Barnsley. The match was refereed by Anthony Backhouse.

Team Focus: Barnsley

Formed: 1887
Nickname: The Tykes
Stadium: Oakwell Stadium (23,287)
Captain: Adam Davies
Chairman: Chien Lee & Paul Conway
Manager: Daniel Stendel
Competitions: League One position 2

Barnsley has not lost a league game to Blackpool in 4 games and are also unbeaten in their last 26 home games.

Star Man: Cauley Woodrow

Generally played in the Striker position, Cauley Woodrow was born in Hemel Hempstead, England. After having made a senior debut playing for Southend United in the 2013 - 2014 season, the accomplished Forward has managed to score 15 league goals in the League One 2018 - 2019 campaign to date in 29 appearances.

Not that I ever attended football matches in the 50s but Barnsley away has that sort of feel - definitely one of my favourites. After parking in the town centre, there’s the walk to the ground, across the rail tracks, down the cobbled streets lined with chip vans as you make your way towards the low red brick stand topped with barbed wire. Not sure if the away stand still has wooden seats, but if it doesn’t, it should. Can’t recall us winning there too many times, but still a top away day.

Remember an F A Cup tie there in the early 80's. Won 2 - 0, God knows how though. Think we only got out of our own half once in each half (well it felt like that) and scored both times. We were on the terrace behind the goal that day.

The natives were quite unhappy at full time (iirc).

You need a fair bit of staying power if you're going to watch this. A couple of Tykes blabbering on for half an hour.

Is it worth posting, probably not. However, here you are -

Barnsley vs Blackpool preview

Barnsley head coach Daniel Stendel has virtually a full-strength squad to choose from for the home game against Blackpool.

Stendel has no new injury or suspension concerns following Easter Monday's win at Plymouth, which kept his side in the second automatic-promotion spot in League One.

Striker Kieffer Moore made his second appearance off the bench at Plymouth since recovering from the effects of concussion and is pushing for a start. Midfielder Kenny Dougall is a long-term absentee after breaking his leg in the goalless draw at Doncaster last month.

Blackpool midfielder Matty Virtue is doubtful after being forced out of Monday's home win against Fleetwood. Virtue will be assessed after sustaining a nasty gash in the challenge which led to the dismissal of Fleetwood's Nathan Sheron.

Defender Ollie Turton will also be monitored after missing out on Monday because of a hamstring strain. Donervon Daniels is back in training and the defender could return to contention after missing the last two games due to a knock.

Opta stats

Barnsley have only lost one of their last eight league games against Blackpool (W4 D3) and unbeaten in the most recent four encounters (W3 D1).

Blackpool won on their last visit to Oakwell in January 2017, winning 2-1 in extra-time of an FA Cup third round replay.

Barnsley are one of just three sides that remain unbeaten on home soil across the top four tiers of English Football this campaign (P22 W14 D8 L0), alongside Luton and Liverpool.

Following their 2-1 victory against Fleetwood last time out, Blackpool will be aiming to secure back-to-back league victories for the first time since November 2018 (run of three consecutive wins).

Each of Blackpool's last eight goals in League One have been scored by different players (Armand Gnanduillet, Chris Taylor, Curtis Tilt, Jay Spearing, Marc Bola, Matthew Virtue-Thick, Nathan Delfouneso and Nya Kirby).

PREVIEW: Barnsley Vs Blackpool

The Reds are back in action at Oakwell this weekend as we welcome Blackpool in our final home league game of the 2018/19 Sky Bet League One season, and we have it covered in this week's big match preview.

After what has already been a long and enduring campaign for the Reds, it's down to the final week and just two more fixtures as Daniel Stendel's side remain right in the hunt for an immediate return to the second tier.

Back-to-back victories over Easter and results elsehwhere see Barnsley sitting second, two points above nearest challengers, Portsmouth, who do however have an extra game to play.

Good Friday's 2-1 success against Shrewsbury Town at Oakwell was followed up by one of our most impressive away performances of the season at Plymouth Argyle on Easter Monday, running out comfortable 3-0 winners in Devon.

The welcome return to fitness and first team contention of striker Kieffer Moore has provided a timely boost for Reds boss, Stendel. The big forward made 20 minute cameo appearances in both holiday fixtures.

Young forward Jacob Brown scored in both Easter fixtures, he has three goals in his last three games and along with Alex Mowatt and Cauley Woodrow, he's helped the Reds re-discover their touch in front of goal, with the Reds hitting nine goals in their last three fixtures.

After making his surprise return from injury, Kieffer along with Dale Tonge spoke to the media in midweek to preview Saturday's clash with Blackpool, and both those pre-match press conference videos are available on iFollow Barnsley.

Until a couple of weeks ago, Blackpool still had an outside chance of breaking into the top six before this exhilarating campaign drew to a close. The Tangerines were just outside the playoff places following a 3-0 victory over Burton Albion back in November having lost only three of their opening 18 games.

But an indifferent run of form has since seen Terry McPhillips’ side win only seven of their next 26 matches, with home draws against Shrewsbury Town, Wycombe Wanderers, Southend United and Plymouth Argyle appearing to be particularly costly.

However, the Seasiders have shown their resolve against the division’s top teams — drawing at Charlton Athletic, Sunderland and Luton Town, while also securing a hard-fought 1-0 victory against Portsmouth back in January.

They won 2-1 on Easter Monday, beating Fleetwood Town in the Fylde coast derby thanks to a last-gasp Nathan Delfouneso strike at Bloomfield Road.

One goal separated the two sides when we met at Bloomfield Road at the end of 2018, with Cameron McGeehan’s opportunist header just before the hour mark proving to be decisive.

Earlier this campaign, Blackpool knocked Barnsley out of the EFL Cup after staging a second half fightback to come from a goal down to win 3-1, courtesy of strikes from Michael Nottingham, Harry Pritchard and Armand Gnaduillet.

The Tangerines are one of only a handful of teams with nothing left to play for this season, so supporters can sit back and relax this afternoon and next weekend against Gillingham safe in the knowledge that they will return to Sky Bet League One action in August.

December of 2015 was the last time both sides met in league action at Oakwell. It was a resounding 4-2 triumph for the Reds.

The sides first locked horns way back in February of 1899, again at Oakwell and again a Reds victory, by two goals to one.

Barnsley's all-time record against Blackpool is an impressive one. The Reds have 45 wins to the Tangerines' 32.
