What is Roots' Hall like?

At one end of the ground is the relatively modern South Stand. This stand which was opened in 1994, replaced a former open terrace and greatly improved the overall look. It is a small 'double-decker' type of stand, the upper tier hanging over the lower. It is all seated and covered but unfortunately has a few supporting pillars. On its roof is a small clock, dedicated to a former player, Director & Chairman, Frank Walton. There are a couple of blocks of flats that overlook the ground from behind this stand. Opposite is the North Stand, which like the West Stand at one side of the pitch, is single tiered and has an old looking 'barrel' shaped roof (that dates back to the 1950’s), with the West Stand having a unique double-barrel roof. The West Stand extends around to the North Stand so that one corner is filled with seating. It has a number of supporting pillars right at the front, which may hinder your view of the action. It also has the most precarious looking TV gantry that stands on stilts and is accessed by a long ladder.

On the other side is the East (Main) Stand which is another single tiered, covered stand, that has a row of executive boxes running across the back of it. At the front are some strange looking dugouts, which has the management team standing at the front leaning on a wall, with the players sitting behind. The ground has four tall traditional looking floodlight pylons. In other words a proper football ground! On the roof of the North Stand is a relatively new scoreboard that was installed in 2012. The club have an unusual looking club mascot called 'Elvis J Eel', the 'J' standing for jellied!

The safety and security of all spectators at Roots Hall is of paramount importance, and pyrotechnics devices have no place in any football stadium in this country.

Preview: Blues boss on Blackpool test

Kevin Bond has called on a disciplined performance from his side this weekend.

Blues face a physical Blackpool team who pose an aerial threat from the likes of Armand Gnanduillet who stands at 6ft 4, so any free kicks given away around the penalty area could cause problems.

Following the opening day defeat to Coventry last weekend Blues will be hoping to get some points on the board from their first home game this weekend.

And Bond said it’s important his side learn from the defeat to the Sky Blues ahead of facing Simon Grayson’s Blackpool.

On the week leading up to the game…

It’s been a good week. We were disappointed [last weekend] because it was the first game of the season and we didn’t start the game like we wanted and there were reasons for it, but we couldn’t get after them like we wanted to until we had made a change.

Then we did but had gone a goal behind. We did enough to get back in it, had a couple of really good opportunities but it wasn’t to be.

I think we learnt a lesson, or I would like to think we learnt a lesson from that, and the key is not to make the same mistake again. We may all make mistakes but hopefully we don’t make the same mistake again.

On how the new players have settled into the group…

I think from my perspective they seem to have settled in fine but it’s not a difficult group to settle in, they are a good group of boys and make everybody feel welcome.

It’s just getting them use to what we expect from them on the pitch.

It does take a bit of time if you’re introducing new people into the group but in that we still have to get results and we’ve still got to put in a level of performance so we’re absolutely aware of that come Saturday’s game.

On the physical presence that Blackpool bring…

We are what we are from a physical point of view, but we are very aware that they have got that physical presence and they will be a threat in those areas. Everyone will need to make sure we don’t give silly free kicks away, they will be putting it in a box from corner kicks from the first opportunities they get. We are aware of that so we will try and stop as many balls as we possibly can, but when they do we have to deal with them.

On Simon Cox having another week of training…

He’d only joined in really a day and a half before last week, he could never really figure for any great length of time. He came on for just over the last twenty minutes of the game and he will be a lot better or having a full week of training as will the other players.

We’ve got Jason Demetriou just back in training which we’re thankful for, he gives us another option and a bit of competition down the right hand side which we badly need.

We have got options up front as Theo knows with the front boys and its just trying to find a way of getting them in the team and build that competition for places. The boys know if they don’t perform then someone else will take their place.

Southend United vs Blackpool Prediction

We are of the inclination to think that Blackpool and Southend United could both well score here although it’s hard to see a clear-cut winner. Little in this one, and it’s almost too close to call. Our tip is therefore for a very close game with a 1-1 score draw when the referee blows the full-time whistle

Coming into this contest, Blackpool are without a win away from home in their last 3 matches in the league. The last league match featuring these sides was League One match day 36 on 09/03/2019 when the final score was Blackpool 2-2 Southend United. The referee was Chris Sarginson.

Team Focus:
Southend United

Stadium: Roots Hall (12,392)
Captain: Sam Mantom

The Big Preview: Southend (A)

Seasiders Face The Shrimpers

Blackpool's first away game of the season is a 540-mile round trip to Southend United tomorrow.

The Seasiders head to Roots Hall having got their league campaign off to the perfect start last weekend, winning 2-0 at home to Bristol Rovers. Goals from Jay Spearing and Armand Gnanduillet secured the three points in front of a crowd of 11,359 fans.

Southend, meanwhile, lost out narrowly to Coventry City. A Zain Westbrooke goal proved the difference, in a match that was played at St Andrews, home of Birmingham City.

Team News:

Only midfielder Matty Virtue (thigh) remains sidelined for Blackpool, leaving manager Simon Grayson with a strong squad to choose from. A bounce game was also arranged at Fleetwood Town in midweek for those requiring minutes.

The hosts will monitor the progress of striker Simon Cox, who made an appearance off the bench against Coventry City last weekend. The 32-year-old had previously missed a large part of pre-season due to a calf problem. Defender Rob Kiernan misses out with ligament damage.

Previous Meeting:

On a day no Blackpool fan will ever forget, it was Saturday 9 March when the two teams last met. A bumper crowd packed in to Bloomfield Road for the club's 'Homecoming' fixture, as the sides played out a 2-2 draw. An own goal from Taylor Moore, in the 96th minute, salvaged a point for the Seasiders.

Pool's last visit to Southend came in November 2018, when Ollie Turton and Armand Gnanduillet netted in a 2-1 victory.

The Referee:

Kevin Johnson will oversee proceedings at Roots Hall. He refereed two Blackpool fixtures last season - a 1-0 victory at Portsmouth and a goal-less draw at Charlton.

Tickets:

Around 300 Blackpool fans have currently committed to making the trip to Southend, with advance tickets going off-sale at 1pm today (Friday).

Blackpool Matchday Programme

Make sure you pick up the first copy of the matchday programme at tomorrow’s game against Blackpool!

With a striking front cover, designed by Dashfire Design which includes various elements synonymous of the two locations depicted, three players from both sides and ‘Battle of the Seasiders’ emblazoned in the middle of the two managers, tomorrow’s cover is an ambitious start to our 2019/20 programme which will see many different arty designs throughout the season.

The other 67 pages have also had a fresh overhaul of content and design.

Kevin Bond writes his programme notes, a captain’s column returns from Mark Milligan, the player interview this week is loan signing Layton Ndukwu and there’s a nine pages on our visitors.

On page 37 there’s an obituary, written by Peter Miles, of the late Justin Edinburgh who came through the youth team at Blues and signed his first professional deal under manager Paul Clark back in 1988.

Elsewhere, Stephen Humphrys answers some quickfire questions, there’s updates from the U18 and U23 sides and a new double-page feature with the ever-growing SUEPA — check out ‘SUEPA Corner’ which has a Q&A with former midfielder Julian Hails plus loads more!

The programme is available at the usual price of £3 from the Roots Review branded trolleys around the ground and the sellers at half-time!

Make sure you don’t miss out!

SOUTHEND vs BLACKPOOL

Team news: Liam Ridgewell could be pushing for a place in the Southend side. The experienced defender joined the Blues last week but sat out the opening-day defeat at Coventry while he worked on his fitness.

Layton Ndukwu signed on loan from Leicester this week and the 20-year-old winger will hope to be involved on Saturday. Rob Kiernan (ankle) is still out while fellow defender Jason Demetriou has stepped up his recovery from a long-term knee injury and the right-back could make a return to action next month.

Blackpool will check on the fitness of midfielder Matty Virtue. The former Liverpool youngster missed the start of the season with a thigh problem.

Seasiders boss Simon Grayson might be tempted to name an unchanged starting line up after his team began the campaign with a 2-0 home win against Bristol Rovers. Goalkeeper Mark Howard is making good progress in his recovery from Achilles surgery, although he is unlikely to feature for the next six to eight weeks at least.

Key stat: Southend have only won one of the last five League One meetings with Blackpool (D2 L2), a 2-1 victory in September 2017.

The view from the other side: Blackpool

ECHOSPORT talks to Blackpool fan Nathan Cowburn ahead of Saturday’s clash at Roots Hall.

Blackpool started the season with a good win against Bristol Rovers. What was your take on the game?

“The whole day was a bit surreal if I’m honest. The majority of Blackpool fans haven’t had an opening day game to look forward to for a long time because of the previous owner. It felt so good to be back at Bloomfield Road and, on the pitch, the team delivered a decent performance, full of attacking intent which we lacked last season. A lot of players also seemed to step up their game, which is great to see and credit goes to new manager Simon Grayson.”

What are the hopes for this season?

“Our new owner wants us to be back in the Championship in the next two years. A sustained push for a top six finish is a realistic and achievable target this season. Simon Grayson has the experience of getting promoted from this League on four occasions. Let’s hope he can work his magic again.”

There certainly seems to be a lot more positivity around the club again?

“There certainly is. The dark clouds of the previous ownership have been lifted and we are entering a bright new era at Blackpool Football Club. We have an owner who is a genuine fan, is prepared to invest in the football club and has ambition for Blackpool to once again return to the Premier League one day. The club hit rock bottom under the previous owner but now we are well and truly on the up.”

Who is the dangerman in the team?

“New signing Sulley Kaikai will prove a handful for any League One defence this season. His pace and trickery is what we need and he is a signing that has all Blackpool fans excited.”

What’s the team news?

“Matty Virtue, who missed the opening game, could return while goalkeeper Mark Howard is recovering from a long term injury.”
