ELLISON - "We'll go to Blackpool & play with freedom"

Kevin Ellison has said this Saturday's Emirates FA Cup tie at Bloomfield Road is "a massive game for the football club," but the Shrimps will go there and "play with freedom."

The veteran winger who took temporary charge at the Globe alongside Barry Roche after the departure of Jim Bentley last week is a big fan of the competition.

"For me personally, I love the FA Cup, I love the underdogs getting results against bigger teams and we'll go there with freedom looking to enjoy the game," said Ellison.

"We're the underdog, we can go and enjoy the occasion and hopefully get the result and put ourselves into the next round.

"If you look at Blackpool, they're the bigger club, they were in the Premier League a few years ago.

"Nobody will be giving us a chance, but we'll go there, express ourselves and as I say hopefully we can do the business and get the club some money."

Grayson: A Fantastic Competition

Manager Reaffirms Desire To Go Far In FA Cup

Simon Grayson believes the FA Cup is a fantastic competition, and is desperate for Blackpool to have another good cup run this season.

The Seasiders hosted Premier League giants Arsenal in the third round last season, and Grayson is hoping for a positive performance against Morecambe on Saturday which will take them one step closer to the third round.

“This club has had some good cup games in recent seasons, and we want a bit more of that this campaign,” Grayson said.

“The FA Cup is a fantastic and historical competition, and like every club that starts in this round and the hundreds of clubs who start in the qualifying rounds, we want a good run again.

“If you reach the third round and get a big team, it’s fantastic for the town and all the supporters, but the financial side of things are massive too.

“If you do get a big team and it’s broadcast on TV, you’re looking at thousands of pounds for the club, so obviously the competition has big implications on your season.”

Grayson and his squad aren’t looking ahead too far at this stage however, with a first round tie against League Two side Morecambe on Saturday afternoon. And with the Shrimps under new management who are set to watch from the stands on Saturday, Grayson is not expecting an easy ride.

“It will be a test for us, make no mistake,” he said.

“We’ve watched Morecambe’s last two matches — like we do with all opponents. Under Kevin Ellison and Barry Roche, they’ve looked sharp and had a good win last time out.

"Whether Derek Adams (the new Morecambe manager) has had any say on how to set up for this game remains to be seen, but regardless of that, we’ve got to set up and make sure we’re in the hat for the second round draw next week.”

Retro Theme For Morecambe Programme

Pick Up A Copy of 'The Seasider' Before Kick-Off

There's a retro theme to the Blackpool programme for the visit of Morecambe in the Emirates FA Cup this weekend.

The special edition reverts to the title of 'The Seasider' and takes its cover design inspiration from the programmes produced in the late 1970s.

Inside the programme, we take a look back at Blackpool's 1953 FA Cup success and the influence of Sir Stanley Matthews in tangerine.

There's also plenty of content about the present as well, with Jak Alnwick and Ryan Edwards previewing the first round tie, plus the usual notes from manager Simon Grayson and captain Jay Spearing.

You'll find all this and more in tomorrow's special edition retro programme, on sale now for ÂŁ3.

Nathan Delfouneso is hoping a win for Blackpool against Morecambe tomorrow could spark a repeat of last season’s FA Cup run.

The Seasiders welcome the struggling League Two Shrimps to Bloomfield Road for their first round encounter.

Pool reached the third round last season, where they were handed a money-spinning televised tie against Premier League giants Arsenal.

Should Simon Grayson’s men overcome Morecambe on Saturday, they will be just one game away from a similarly enticing encounter.

“It’s always the goal (to draw a big side),” Delfouneso told The Gazette.

“It will be nice to have a cup run again. It wasn’t to be in the League Cup this season but we’ve still got this competition left.

“It’s not going to be an easy game, so we’ve got to earn the right to get into the next round - which is exactly what we’re aiming to do.

“But we’re looking forward to it and hopefully we can come through it.”

The forward added: “I have very good memories of the FA Cup. I’ve had some really good experiences in the competition but, on the flip side, I’ve also had some not-so-good memories. But it’s all part and parcel of it.

“It’s a special competition which I always love playing in and I look forward to playing in it again.

“You could say this is a nice distraction for us, but for me a game is a game so every game that comes up, I always look forward to it.”

Tomorrow’s opponents Morecambe are currently languishing at the bottom of the League Two table, having picked up just three wins from their 17 games so far.

But caretaker bosses Kevin Ellison and Barry Roche, who will remain in charge on Saturday despite the recent appointment of Derek Adams, oversaw a 1-0 victory against Leyton Orient last week.

Despite Morecambe’s struggles this season, Delfouneso insists the Seasiders will have to be at their best to progress into the second round.

“It’s a difficult game,” the 28-year-old added.

“The FA Cup is the FA Cup, so they can come here knowing they’ve got nothing to lose. That means they can play with a freedom.

“Obviously we’re the big scalp, so it’s down to us to go into the game with the right attitude and the right mentality to go and perform well. Hopefully we do that.

“We know we can beat anybody, but it’s going to be a tough game because they’re a decent team with some good players. They’ll be really up for it.

“We’ve got to match their workrate and then make sure we’re better.”

Simon Grayson believes there's a good chance Morecambe's players will up their game for tomorrow's FA Cup first round tie against his Blackpool side.

That's because they will be wanting to impress their new boss Derek Adams, who was appointed the club's new manager on Thursday.

Adams won't be in charge for Saturday's cup tie - with Kevin Ellison and Barry Roche set to continue as caretaker bosses - but the former Plymouth Argyle man will be there to watch at Bloomfield Road.

But even if the struggling League Two outfit do take their game to another level, Grayson wants his side to do whatever is required to put their name in the hat for the second round.

“It’s another game for us that we want to win, regardless of what the opposition are doing," the Pool boss said.

“We’ve got to approach the game in the right manner because we want to get through to the next round.

“If the Morecambe players are wanting to go up a notch or two because the new manager is watching then so be it, we’ll just have to match everything they throw at us.

“From Morecambe’s perspective, I’m sure the players will be looking to make a mark on the game.

“But I also think they’ll be trying to get through, like we are, because it’s a fantastic competition and every club that starts in the first round - and a lot of clubs start a lot more rounds before this - are desperate to have a good run."

Grayson added: “We’ve had them watched for the last two games, as we do with all our opposition. Whether Derek has any input into it over the last 24 hours or so, so be it.

“A lot of people were being linked with the job over the last few days but Derek has done a good job down at Plymouth over the years as well as up in Scotland.

“I’m sure he will be looking to implement his own ideas quickly and try and take them up the division.

“It’s a fresh start for them but we’ve got to concentrate on what we do and build on our last two results where we’ve had good wins and good performances.

“We just want to make sure we’re in the hat for the next round.

“Every time we play a match we are very respectful of the opposition, their strengths and weaknesses and who can hurt us in certain areas.

“But a lot of the time we have to do what we’re good at doing and make sure we are ruthless in both boxes, pass the ball both quickly and effectively and don’t give any encouragement to the opposition and don’t give them any chances.

“One part of you is respectful to the opposition but a larger part is about what we do with our approach and show the right characteristics to get through.”
