Reading boss Mark Bowen has hinted he may look to make wholesale changes to his side for a second time for Tuesday night's FA Cup replay against Blackpool.

The Royals boss made all 11 changes for the original third round tie, which ended in a 2-2 draw.

The two sides will do battle for a second time to decide who will progress into the fourth round for a home tie against either Cardiff City or Carlisle United - who play their replay on Wednesday.

Bowen, speaking after his side's dramatic 1-1 draw against Nottingham Forest yesterday, said: "We'll have a look at making changes and freshening things up.

"Like everybody else, every game you play a part in you want to win and that won't change.

"Whatever team I put out, it'll be as organised as we can get them and we'll make demands of them to go up to Blackpool and get the win."

One man who will be desperate to stay in the Reading side in Charlie Adam, who was left out of the squad entirely for the original fixture at the Madejski Stadium.

Should the Scot feature on Tuesday night, it will be his first appearance at Bloomfield Road since his departure in 2011.

The Berkshire outfit are currently enjoying an eight-game unbeaten run in all competitions, a streak that stretches back to the start of December.

It leaves them in 14th position in the Championship, six points adrift of the play-offs.

Opposition Report: Reading

Seasiders To Welcome Royals In FA Cup Replay

Blackpool welcome Reading to Bloomfield Road on Tuesday evening, in an Emirates FA Cup Third Round Replay.

The Seasiders played out a 2-2 draw at the Madejski Stadium ten days ago, with Nathan Delfouneso and Armand Gnanduillet both putting Simon Grayson’s side in front before Reading clawed their way back, firstly through Sam Baldock and then Danny Loader.

Reading are currently on an impressive eight game unbeaten run stretching back to the start December in a home defeat to Birmingham City.

After a shaky start in the league, Mark Bowen’s side have picked up and currently sit in 14th place in the Championship table.

Last Three Results:

11 January — Reading 1-1 Nottingham Forest
4 January — Reading 2-2 Blackpool
1 January — Fulham 1-2 Reading

Manager: Mark Bowen

Mark Bowen held two roles at Reading before becoming manager in October 2019. The 56-year-old joined the club in March 2019 as the club’s technical consultant. He became the club’s sporting director in August and was then appointed as first team manager in October after Jose Gomes’ departure. Despite enjoying coaching roles at the likes of Crystal Palace, Birmingham City and Stoke City, this is Bowen’s first ever manager’s job in first team football.

Since being installed as manager at the Madejski Stadium, Bowen has impressed and the club has risen from relegation candidates to play-off hopefuls over a short space of time.

Star Man: John Swift

Despite George Puscas, Yakou Meite and Lucas Joao being above him in the club goalscoring charts, John Swift has proved a vital component of Reading’s side so far this season. The attacking midfielder has scored five goals and provided seven assists for the Royals this season, proving a real threat to many opponents. The 24-year-old is a Chelsea Academy graduate having spent time on loan at Rotherham United, Swindon Town and Brentford before his permanent move to Reading in 2016.

Familiar Face: Charlie Adam

It’ll be a warm return to Bloomfield Road for Charlie Adam on Tuesday evening. The midfielder spent two years at Blackpool and was part of that side that gained promotion to the Premier League back in 2010, scoring a sublime free-kick against Cardiff City in the Championship Play-Off Final.

Now 34, Adam signed for Reading in July 2019 from Stoke City and has scored a couple of goals for the Royals since his arrival.

10 changes, 19-y/o in: The Reading XI we expect Bowen to play against Blackpool tomorrow night

Reading have had an upturn in form in recent weeks and have managed to stay unbeaten in their last eight fixtures.

They were almost undone by a strong Blackpool side last week as they drew 2-2 having made a number of changes for the FA Cup clash.

The Royals now prepare to face them once more, this time in a replay against the Seasiders where they’ll hope to get through to the 4th round to face one of Cardiff or Carlisle.

Here’s the Reading XI that Mark Bowen is expected to play against Blackpool on Tuesday…

Reading are expected to make wholesale changes when they travel to Bloomfield Road on Tuesday night. The keeper should switch from Rafael to Sam Walker, as the latter started the previous cup game against Blackpool.

The back four contains three changes with Michael Morrison keeping his place to ensure that the side isn’t out fought physically once more by striker Armand Gnanduillet. Youngster Teddy Howe should come in once more at right-back.

Andy Rinomhota will be the man protecting the back four and in front of him there will be rare starts for Sone Aluko, Lucas Boye and Garath McCleary. All three have been out of sorts of late and need to impress on Tuesday when they take on the League One outfit.

Up top, and it looks like it will be a Reading partnership of George Puscas and Danny Loader. The Romanian forward has just come back from injury so it’ll be the perfect opportunity for him to get more minutes ahead of a potential start in the league on Saturday against Millwall.

Reading will be hoping to advance to the next round of the cup and make it nine games unbeaten in all competitions.

James Husband says he and his Blackpool teammates can't afford to take Reading lightly should they field a weakened side once again.

The defender was speaking ahead of tomorrow night's FA Cup third round replay, where the Royals will make the long journey up to Bloomfield Road.

The two sides will do battle once again after they played out an entertaining 2-2 draw in the original tie, with the winners set to face either Cardiff City or Carlisle United.

Reading boss Mark Bowen made 11 changes for that original encounter and he's since hinted he will do similar for the replay.

But even if the Championship side do field a team full of fringe players and youngsters, the Royals will have more than enough quality to trouble the Seasiders according to Husband.

“I thought we probably deserved to go through in the first game," the on-loan Norwich City defender said.

“They played a young, inexperienced side but there was still Championship quality throughout their team. That will probably be the case in the replay.

“I’ve seen that their manager has said he will probably mix up the team again a little bit but whoever they play, they will have quality.

“We have to turn up just as we did in the first game and if we can perform anywhere near the level we did in the original tie then we’ve got a good chance of progressing into the next round.”

Reading enjoyed the lion's share of the possession in the original tie, yet the Seasiders were happy to sit back, soak up pressure and hit their Championship opponents on the break.

It was a tactic that almost proved dividends, Pool taking the lead on two occasions through Nathan Delfouneso and Armand Gnanduillet only to be pegged back both times.

“I think the way we setup was a bit more counter-attacking," Husband admitted.

“They will probably have a little bit more of the ball than us but it’s about what we do when we have the ball.

“We know our strengths and our qualities so as long as we stick to them then hopefully we’ll do alright.

“I’m sure it will be a typical Tuesday night in Blackpool under the lights with a few people coming.

“Hopefully we can put a performance on and get the result to back it up.”

Replay, extra time, penalties -

Nowadays, only rounds 3 and 4 of the FA Cup have replays.

If scores are level after 90 minutes of the replay, extra time is played.

If the scores are still tied at the end of extra time, the match will be decided on penalties.

Blackpool vs Reading: Match Preview

Who’ll come out on top in this seaside clash on Tuesday night?

A mid-week FA Cup replay sees League One Blackpool host Championship side Reading in what promises to be a tough test for both sides, as Mark Bowen looks set to make wholesale changes to his starting eleven.

There are doubts as to whether Charlie Adam will make the trip up to Lancashire to face the side where he became a legend, leading the Seasiders to the Premier League back in 2011. He scored a brilliant free kick at Wembley as Blackpool came out victorious against Cardiff City in the playoff final, in a thrilling 3-2 win. They have endured tough times since then, slipping down the divisions, although they now seem to be on their way back up.

Here’s everything you need to know ahead of this FA Cup third-round replay tie at Bloomfield Road.

The last meeting
Reading 2-2 Blackpool (oh, and our last FA Cup clash as well)

The home side came very close to opening the score early on, with Sam Baldock’s flick on a Garath McCleary cross hitting the post, before Blackpool opened the scoring. Matty Virtue’s cross from the left-hand side was headed back across the face of goal by Arnand Gnanduillet into the path of Nathan Delfouneso, who headed the ball past Sam Walker. Could Walker have done better? Perhaps so.

Reading managed to get themselves back into the game early on in the second half. Michael Olise’s throw ball to Baldock was hit first time, catching goalkeeper Howard off guard. Just a couple of minutes later, Blackpool were back in front.

An awkwardly bouncing ball on the halfway line proved to be too difficult for Andre Burley to deal with, as Armand Gnanduillet outpaced the young centre back to run through on goal and slot the ball past Walker to make it 2-1. Could Walker have done better? He needed to get a stronger hand on it.

Reading were back on level terms five minutes later through some nice link up play on the right hand side from Howe and McCleary. The Jamaican’s cross was met with a brilliant flick by Danny Loader, who guided the ball in to the net.

The away side could have won it late on, when Teddy Howe brought down Gnanduillet inside the box. However, the forward’s Panenka attempt came back off the crossbar and Reading managed to scramble it clear through a combination of great work from Richards and Burley (what a block from Burley).

TTE stats

- Reading have conceded seven goals in their last three FA Cup games.

- The Royals started six academy graduates against Blackpool in the tie at the Madejski Stadium. A further five were on the bench.

- Blackpool have failed to keep a clean sheet in their last five league games. A chance for George Puscas to bag a goal or two this midweek?

- The Seasiders have not progressed to the fourth round of the FA Cup since 2017. They lost 2-0 away at Blackburn Rovers that year.

Predictions

Unlikely but preferable Reading lineup: Southwood, Richards, McIntyre, Miazga, Howe, Rinomhota, Obita, Olise, McCleary, Loader, Puscas

There’s no doubt that Sam Walker could have done better with the goals in the reverse fixture, and this may persuade Mark Bowen to start Luke Southwood on Tuesday so the young goalkeeper can get some minutes in the first team.

Academy graduates Omar Richards and Teddy Howe may get the nod again this midweek, as the pair look to solidify their places in the first team squad. Another academy graduate in Tom McIntyre could also start on Tuesday, after returning from injury. He’s looked very promising in the games he has played so far, let’s hope he can play a more important role next season when Miazga’s loan expires. The American international is likely to partner him at the heart of defence.

The Royals may go for a 4-1-3-2, with Rinomhota as the defensive midfielder and Obita, Olise and McCleary ahead of him supporting the two strikers. Jordan Obita and Garath McCleary are both capable of tracking back to support the younger full backs. McCleary will be especially important in supporting Howe, who’s had limited first team opportunities and only made his debut in the final game of last season against Birmingham City.

George Pucas and Danny Loader could start as a promising duo up top. Both will be looking to get on the scoresheet this week as they look to boost their chances of starting in league games. With Danny Loader’s contract situation as it is now, he may not be getting many chances over the next few months.

The Miazga and McIntyre partnership looks solid on paper, let’s hope they can keep a clean sheet away from home if they start on Tuesday. Loader and/or Puscas are also likely to get on the scoresheet if they are provided with adequate service. I’m going for a narrow 1-0 away win in this FA Cup third round replay.

My predictions:

Team: It's too difficult to say other than, as the first match, it'll be more or less our strongest starting eleven excepting a couple of tweaks.

Score: We should have enough to beat Reading's reserve team, albeit they'll have some quality in their line up and, from what I saw from the first match, will be likely to score. 2-1 win for Blackpool.

Attendance: Over 5k will be good for a midweek cup replay against a weakened Reading side. 5,033.

The Big Preview: Reading (H)

Blackpool To Welcome Reading In FA Cup Third Round Replay

Blackpool entertain Reading in an Emirates FA Cup Third Round Replay on Tuesday, in what is the Seasiders first home match of 2020.

Following the 2-2 draw at the Madejski Stadium ten days ago, tonight’s replay is needed to decide who goes through to the fourth round of the competition. The eventual winner will face either Championship side Cardiff City or League Two’s Carlisle United at home on the 25 January, who both play their replay on Wednesday evening.

Reading come into the game on the back of a 1-1 home draw with Nottingham Forest on Saturday, courtesy of a 98th minute equaliser. Blackpool, meanwhile, have had an extended break having not played since the match at the Madejski Stadium on 4 January.

Team News:

Simon Grayson has confirmed new signings Grant Ward and Jordan Thorniley will be in the 18 man squad, and possibly start the match. Marc Bola is cup-tied. Jak Alnwick remains sidelined until April.

Reading are expected to make several changes to the side who played on Saturday.

The Referee:

Darren Bond will officiate the match in what is his first Blackpool match of the 2019/20 season.

Manager views

Simon Grayson: "We need to prepare for what we can do to win the game and not waste too much time or energy worrying about what our opponents are going to do.

"This is the same for any fixture, whether that be in the cup or the league.

"We need to pay attention on how we can improve as a team and get the victory that is required to go through to the next round."

Mark Bowen : "There will be changes, but we have to give the cup the respect it deserves.

"And like everyone in football, as a professional, every game you play you want to win. So we will have that attitude when we go up to Blackpool.

"There are players that are chomping at the bit to play and it might give an opportunity to some of those players who are waiting for their chance.

"We will have plenty of fans travelling up to Blackpool — and if they’re travelling up, we owe them the respect of going there and putting in a performance."

Reporter's prediction

BerkshireLive reporter Jonathan Low says: "This is a really tricky tie for Reading I think.

"I expect Bowen to make lots of changes again so it will largely be down to the youngsters to help Royals progress into the next round.

"It would be great to have a cup run but I can see the Seasiders edging this one and although it will be a disappointment, the league is the priority now and it'll be no bad thing turning all attentions to that - Blackpool 2 Reading 1. "
