Ethan Robson opens up on Blackpool move, 'unbelievable' Sunderland support and the reunion ahead
Ethan Robson believes he can ‘really excel’ at Blackpool as the League One season nears.
Sunderland released Robson at the end of last season and their rivals moved quickly to secure his signature.
The 23-year-old was well known to Blackpool Head Coach Neil Critchley, who worked at Liverpool’s academy as Robson was coming through the ranks on Wearside.
Robson says he and his new team have long-term designs on the Championship but he remains eager to keep his feet on the ground as he bids to secure a place in the starting XI on a regular basis.
“I spoke with the manager and he expressed that he would like me to come and he was saying some really exciting things,” Robson said.

“From then on, my main focus was trying to get it sorted for me to come here and thankfully it happened.
“He talked about the style of play and the way he wants to play. He’s been at Liverpool so he’s got that philosophy. He’s a top coach and he told me I would suit the way he likes to play to a tee.
“He also talked about the desire to get promoted, which would be unbelievable. But I don’t think we can think that far ahead at the minute.
“We’ve just got to get a good pre-season under our belts and then take it game by game.
“But I’ve already played in the Championship with Sunderland and I’ve proven I can play at that level and I believe I can play at that level on a consistent basis.
“I just need the games and I need a bit more experience. But I know I’ve got the talent and I back my ability.
“Coming here is a great platform for me and hopefully I can really excel here and do well for this club and the manager.”
Robson admits it will be ‘weird’ to face the Black Cats last season, and thanked the club’s ‘unbelievable’ support for their best wishes after his long association with the club came to an end.
“Sixteen years is obviously a long time, but if I’m honest it’s definitely the right time to leave Sunderland and get on with things,” he said.
"I’m ready to move on with my career.
“I loved my time there and I was a bit disappointed to leave, but I’m really happy to be here and I can’t wait to get started.
“The fans were brilliant, they’re unbelievable really given what they’ve been through. To get nice feedback and comments from them, it’s nice to hear.
“I back my ability so hopefully I can come here and do well.
“Having been there for such a long time, it will probably feel a bit weird playing against Sunderland next season.
“But that’s something I’d relish and look forward to. It’s obviously a really nice stadium and I think it would add a bit more spice to the game as well.” | |
