Critchley: We Want That Winning Feeling Back

Neil Critchley is expecting a tough encounter when Sunderland visit Bloomfield Road on Tuesday evening for a second round Carabao Cup tie.

The Seasiders welcome the Black Cats on the back of Saturday's impressive 2-2 draw at AFC Bournemouth, and the Blackpool Head Coach thinks the comeback from being two goals down will inject a good deal of confidence into his side.

"I've said before that these players can achieve a lot more than maybe they think they can," he said.

"We can't put ourselves in the players minds, but we try to influence their thinking and work at that in training and in our preparation every day. There's no substitute for getting good results though, and I think the result on Saturday was one we can be really proud of. I think we deserved something to show for our efforts from the match, and we can take a lot from that going forward.

"Similarly in the previous round of the Carabao Cup, where we played Middlesbrough and played really well on the night. We started the game well and got a foothold in the game and scored at good times. We controlled the game and a lot of players played well on the night. It would be nice to give our supporters a similar level of performance on Tuesday night against Sunderland, because the last two home games we haven't been able to do that. It wasn't for the want of effort or application and endeavour, we've just been a little bit unfortunate.

"We want to have that winning feeling back and we want to give that to our supporters as well."

Looking ahead to Sunderland's visit, Critchley is expecting a tight affair, much like the two league games were last season.

"They were two extremely close matches as the scorelines would suggest," he said.

"They both went in our favour, but you could arguably have said it could quite easily have gone the other way. They were two really tough games, but both squads are slightly different now, and the two sides that take to the pitch will probably be different to the ones we saw last season.

"They've got a strong set of players and we know we'll be in for a tough match."

The Blackpool Head Coach also confirmed the game could be a good opportunity for Daniel Gretarsson to make his long-awaited return from injury.

"Daniel played about an hour last week in a development squad game to continue his recovery back to full fitness, and this game might be an opportunity for him to gain more minutes.

"There might be a few others in that camp as well, and we just have to get the balance right between giving those who have been out of action the minutes they need, but equally keep the strength of the team intact for what will be a tough match."

Sunderland new boy to make his debut at Blackpool, Lee Johnson confirms

Sunderland head coach Lee Johnson has revealed some of the changes he will make for tomorrow's Carabao Cup tie

New signing Frederik Alves will make his Sunderland debut at Blackpool tomorrow night, Lee Johnson has confirmed.

The on-loan West Ham man will partner Bailey Wright in central defence as the Black Cats take on the Seasiders at Bloomfield Road in the Carabao Cup second round.

Denmark U21 international Alves joined Sunderland ten days ago and was an unused substitute for the last two games, at Burton Albion and then the weekend win against AFC Wimbledon at the Stadium of Light.

But the 21-year-old will now make his senior debut in English football in the cup.

Johnson told the club's official website: "Bailey will start as well as Frederik and it will be nice to see how that partnership works."

Latest addition from Leeds United Niall Huggins is also available to make his debut at Blackpool, while on-loan Everton striker Nathan Broadhead could make his first start for the club.

Corry Evans remains sidelined with a hamstring problem, while Luke O'Nien and goalkeeper Lee Burge will be assessed before a decision is made on their involvement.

Burge pulled out of the game against Wimbledon after feeling some discomfort from a hip flexor problem in the warm-up, with Anthony Patterson promoted from the bench to start.

Patterson played in the previous round of the cup at Port Vale and will start against Blackpool if Johnson decides not to risk Burge.

Neil Critchley: No less pressure or desire to win in Blackpool Carabao Cup clash with Sunderland

The team may change for Blackpool’s Carabao Cup games, but the desire and pressure to win is no different to league fixtures.

The team may change for Blackpool’s Carabao Cup games, but the desire and pressure to win is no different to league fixtures.

So says Seasiders boss Neil Critchley before his team renew their rivalry with last season’s promotion rivals Sunderland in the second round at Bloomfield Road tonight (7.45pm).

The head coach is acutely aware that Blackpool go into the tie after losing their last two games in front of their home supporters and that last season’s success was achieved in front of limited crowds, if not behind closed doors.

Critchley told The Gazette: “There’s always pressure to win and this is no different.

“We’ve lost the last two here and we want to get that winning feeling back at home. When you have the supporters turning up in their numbers it’s important that we give them something to shout about.

“We will give everything and we want the supporters here to enjoy the winning feeling we enjoyed when they weren’t able to watch us at the stadium.”

As Critchley aims to build on the 3-0 first-round success over Middlesbrough a fortnight ago, he looks certain to ring the changes for Blackpool’s sixth assignment in 18 days.

He added: “There will be changes after a busy schedule because we’ve played every midweek.

“I expect Sunderland will do the same, but we know that whatever team we select will be one we think is good enough to win.”

Pool’s surge to the League One play-offs included two vital 1-0 wins over the Black Cats in April but Critchley isn’t sure the Wearside club will arrive on the Fylde tonight to prove a point.

“We will come up against certain individuals we know but the Sunderland team and squad will be different from last season,” he said.

“We had two very good games against them, and although we won both, they could easily have gone the other way.

“I’m sure their ambition is to win promotion and I’m sure Lee Johnson will take the opportunity against us to look at other players.

“But they have quality throughout their squad and we know it will be a tough task.”

One player who will not be involved for Blackpool tonight is Grant Ward, who was stretchered off in Saturday’s 2-2 draw at Bournemouth with an Achilles injury.

Critchley hopes to know more about the extent of that injury today.

The midfielder was due to undergo a scan yesterday evening and his boss could only hope for positive news.

He added: “He jumped for a header in the second half and felt it.

“It’s one of those where you fear the worst when it first happens, and you don’t take any chances with that sort of injury.”

Good to see Grétarsson back.

The competition will start getting interesting if we get through tonight.

One premise is that our players are so well coached that there's a seamless transition when making changes.

Fingers crossed.

9’ Goal Blackpool

The hosts have made the better start and took advantage of space down Sunderland’s right after Huggins ran forward.

John-Jules had time to pick out Lavery who converted from close range.

12’ GOAL!!! O’BRIEN!

What a pass from Dan Neil to cut open the Blackpool defence.

O’Brien made the run through the centre and converted with a neat finish.

25’ Better from Sunderland

Blackpool are committing men forward which is leaving space in behind.

Sunderland just enjoyed a spell of possession before O’Brien released Broadhead on goal.

Keogh was still in between the forward and the goal and the shot was tame and comfortable for Grimshaw in the Blackpool goal.
