| News Comment | It's Official Adam Lallana Returns To Southampton at 11:39:20
My memory is of the Cortese/Pochetino cult going sour with the inevitable break up of the team. Lallana was just part of that and the media only ever see our players as additions to the rich elite when we are doing well. Don't care about the past but wonder how much he has to offer in a relegation battle. |
| News Comment | Southampton Linked To Reunion With Armando Broja at 15:40:28
Agree with last comment. Hope it's just lazy journalism that links us with Broja, JWP, Ings, Lallana etc. New start, give the promoted players a chance and add some genuinely new faces ( plus Flynn Downes of course) |
| News Comment | Southampton V Stoke City The Verdict at 13:25:01
This time last year Saints were a shambolic embarrassment with a bloated squad full of youngsters and under achievers. An awful lot has been achieved over the year and a fourth place finish is about right for this group of players and the manager. Cardiff knocked the stuffing out of a tired squad and Leicester and Stoke have benefitted. If RM and the players manage to turn this around and get to the play-off final they will deserve real credit for their resilience. |
| News Comment | Alex McCarthy Or Joe Lumley That Is The Question For Russell Martin at 11:16:34
Good points about game time and relative experience. I'd personally commit to Lumley as he will be here next year whether we go up or not. However, I expect RM's decision will be primarily determined by his goalkeeping coaches who work closely with them every day. |
| News Comment | Southampton V Coventry City The Verdict at 10:39:31
I thought the game showed how evenly matched so many of the sides are and it's is often down to the "rub of the green". Saints were unlucky against Middlesbrough and Ipswich and got lucky tonight. There is an inevitable tendency to retrofit performances to results when often it's a single individual error, piece of skillor slice of luck that determines the outcome. |
| News Comment | Defence Is The Best Form Of Defence at 11:30:46
I think Leicester and Leeds have better squads and most observers would have them above us. We have been competitive and in the mix for most of the season, played attacking passing football but with the same vulnerabilities as most championship sides - strikers miss chances and defenders make mistakes. It makes it an exciting league. Get behind RM , IS and Saints and enjoy the last nine/ ten games! |
| News Comment | Southampton Promotion Campaign Will Go To The Wire at 14:38:00
I'm just really enjoying Saints winning most weeks. If we end up in the playoffs and even if we don't go up, it's still been a brilliant season as far as I'm concerned. The EPL is horrible, over hyped by the endless pundits, VAR and a miserable atmosphere as we struggle to stay up along with every club outside the top eight. Obviously I want us to win every game and be promoted but I see next year in the Prem as the price we have to pay for a great season this time around. |
| News Comment | January Transfer Window Mixed Bag For Southampton at 09:15:07
Surely problem for Holgate was the number of loans available in a match day squad. I believe it is 5 only so if Brooks, THB, Downes and Fraser are starters it was either Rothwell or Holgate on the bench. |
| News Comment | Alcaraz Set To Complete Loan Move To Italian Giant at 13:27:46
It really seems that Saints promotion push is being based on solid experienced championship players rather than exciting potential. I think Edozie and Kamaldeen will become the substitutes with a front line of Brooks, AA, Frazer. If you add KWP, Bednarek, Stephens, Manning, Downes, Smallbone, Rothwell and Stu there is a lot of experience now. |
| News Comment | Southampton At Watford The FA Cup Verdict at 18:01:36
Not sure our squad is as strong as might be suggested. OBut only way for them to improve is to play. Watford replay gives them another chance which should help us in the long run regardless of the result. |
| News Comment | Saints To Take Midfielder On Loan From Bournemouth at 16:28:12
I thought he was more an alternative for Smallbone rather than Stu Armstrong or Charlie Alcatraz. But it does raise a question over the number of loans and Aribo's role going forward. Does Aribo become the Tella alternative on the right? Not an obvious fit but I'm not sure that a midfield of Downes, Aribo and Stu. A makes best use of Aribo. |
| News Comment | Southampton V Sheffield Wednesday The Verdict at 17:16:19
Unlike last year this was a very experienced team with the youngsters coming on off the bench. Bazunu and Harwood-Bellis were the least experienced and both were regular starters for Burnley and Saints respectively last year. |
| News Comment | Southampton Come Through December Period Strong & Getting Stronger at 18:01:40
Interesting to compare this year's squad with last year. Martin has a smaller squad and ensures virtually everybody gets some game time. This seems really positive with many of the regular substitutions and small rotations keeping levels of match fitness up amongst all the players. However, we will need to replace those that are injured or leave with another utility defender/ defensive midfielder, a wide attacker and a centre forward the minimum if Holgate and Che leave and Larios, Kamaldeen and Stewart are long term absentees. Otherwise the optimism might evaporate with more injuries or suspensions to key players like KWP and Downes. |
| News Comment | Will Russell Martin Be The 7th Manager In A Row Hounded Out Of Southampton at 15:51:18
I don't think it's fans that hound managers out. Poor performances and poor results mean that fans are disappointed and make their feelings heard -not unreasonably. SR will stick with RM. They have to, they appointed Wilcox, they have banged on and on about the long term project, alignment, playing a new way etc etc. The elephant in the room is whether RMs tactics will EVER produce a consistently winning championship team, even when the players learn how to play as he wants them to. |
| News Comment | Gavin Bazunu Needs Backing Not Sacking at 14:28:06
Good goalkeepers tend to be part of a good defence or they are desperate keepers behind a chaotic backline. Bazunu has to become part of the wider solution to our defensive frailties. No point not backing him and undermining his confidence. |
| News Comment | Does Kamaldeen Sulemana Have A Part To Play In Southampton's Season at 15:21:24
We are all hoping that he'll be as good as the price tag I guess but I'm yet to be convinced. Lots of questions at the moment about who plays where in RM's first choice team. I think Saints had anticipated on both Sulana and KWP leaving during the window. That would make Manning the inverted full back and Holgate shuffling across from right back to make a three with Harwood- Bellis and Stephens. If that's still the plan KWP has move up to right wing back/ midfield. Not sure where Slulemana plays unless a replacement for Edozie. |
| News Comment | Southampton At Sunderland The (Damning) Verdict at 19:08:56
If we are going to play KWP and Manning then perhaps it's three at the back with HB, Charles and Stephens (when fit). Smallbone and Downes in midfield and Arma, Alcaraz and Che up front. RM has a lot of options so he needs to really start working on his formation and starting 11. |
