I think this has been one of the best World Championships for years, precisely because the big names have gone. Surely these are the most equally matched semi-finalists for many years, which has led to some absolutely riveting snooker. Really enjoying both of the semi-finals so far and still no idea who will get through to the final.
Also have to say the BBC coverage has been excellent this year too.
Ben works in digital media these days. We used to be in touch fairly regularly when I was on facebook, but since I deleted my account (couldn't stand it anymore), I've lost touch with him... and about 500 other people...
It was indeed Ben's temporary absence that caused the demise of the late lamented qpr.org, not because he didn't want to run it anymore, but because it was rather shamelessly usurped by a certain character who was nicknamed 'The Gnome' by the estimable (and oft-mentioned in this thread), Mr R. Chapman esq, AKA Chappers.
Chappers long term absence from QPR messageboards is because he has eschewed football in favour of his true love, county cricket, and Surrey in particular.
The 6-0 was a special moment. One thing I remember was how hot it was, especially as I had to leg it from the BR to the ground in a desperate dash to secure possibly the last ticket on sale (I'd just got back from holiday and my mate had somehow forgotten to get tickets). Who wasn't on the pitch afterwards?
The Leeds 4-0 was a different kind of drama for me because where the 6-0 felt like a one-off moment of pure joy, this season it felt like there was no let up between the Ainsworth plummet and the Marti Cifuentes mission; a season long, edge-of-the-seat drama leading to this totally unexpected climax.
And not only that, he came in when the team was on its arse, bereft of confidence and hope. To achieve that PPG ratio under those circumstances is extraordinary.
Another thing from last night: because this was the only live football, a lot of fans of Premier league clubs watched the game, and the general consensus I saw on Twitter was not just what a great game it was for the neutrals (well, kind of neutral, there ain't a lot of love for Leeds out there!), but also the joy of watching the football flow, unencumbered by VAR. It further underlines all the other points about the vulgar money grubbing premier league. The sooner the 'top' clubs fck off and form their own league the better. The Championship still upholds (just about) the purity of the game we love.
Thanks for giving this a bump mate, I was thinking about this last night!
Yes, I am, and have been, savouring this season - more or less - I have wavered! But the best stories always have their reversals of fortune, the apparent disasters, the many twists and turns before the climax and its aftermath. I think what I said in my OP back in early February holds true - and I am mighty pleased that it does!
If Marti stays - and I think he will - we will go into next season with a full pre-season of the Cifuentes method instilled in our players old and new. If Eze is sold, we may even have the dosh to (whisper it) buy a decent striker. A keeper to replace Begbie, who has been pretty solid all things considered, and a couple of other players, and then who knows, maybe what I said in my last paragraph really will be the case:
"Of course the season could still end up with the massive downer of relegation. But I don't think it will. I think we will survive, and then in years to come, we may even look back at this season as a remarkable turning point in the strange, chequered yet beautiful history of Queens Park Rangers."
Watching the Leeds players during the warm-up, they were swanning about, big smiles on their mugs, like preening peacocks; they just knew they were going to beat us easily. They only had to turn up really. Job done.
It was in this moment that I realised we were going to tonk the arrogant fckers good and proper.
