In a tournament setting yes, but try applying that penalty when you're playing a leisurely round with friends.

In this particular case it was a friendly round with an old mate who'd invited me to a very exclusive golf club so during the round I didn't take issue with it. It was only at the end when he began totting up his score that I pushed back. Since then, whenever we play I insist that all putts are made, and there are no gimmes. The crazy thing is he's pretty decent (certainly better than me) so he really shouldn't have to resort to such tactics.

The devil is in the detail, not the headline.

The studies described in these articles aren't particularly scientific. Researchers compared death certificates of ex-professional footballers born between 1900 and 1976 against the general population (in Scotland). Given that its test cases were dead, many assumptions and estimations had to be made. The research also didn't take into account that football was a different sport back then. In the end, their studies concluded that they found evidence of a greater degree of neurodegenerative disease recorded in death certificates in Scottish ex-footballers but they couldn't say why.

What's needed is a more scientific and robust approach that focuses on the modern-day footballer, covers a test sample across the globe, makes as few assumptions and guesstimates as possible, and arrives at a distinct conclusion supported by hard evidence.

Until then, by all mean protect the kids but leave the professional game alone.

That's because the partner won't listen and the ball doesn't talk back!

They've either got a pass which they're trying to maximise or they're taking advantage of the Hopper fare.

I suspect that comes from trying to maintain a positive mindset so you don't affect the next shot. Personally, I find it delusional; it does nothing to improve your game.

My golfing petty insanity is players who award themselves gimmes. I once played a round with a chap who awarded himself a gimme for any putt within 12 feet. At the end of the round he exclaimed "I just realised I shot a 72", to which I replied "That's assuming you would have made all 18 putts. Had you 2 putted them all, you'd have shot 90".

Some of my relatives would also bless themselves when passing a graveyard where a relative was buried. All would instinctively do so when passing a hearse.
P.S. As I don't have Irish blood in my family it's probably a Catholic thing.

I can understand protecting U12s as biologically they are still developing and aren't as robust as adults. However, I can't see this rule being adopted in the professional game.

The link between Dementia and Alzheimer's in ex-professional football players through heading a ball is yet to be fully determined. The research that has been conducted largely focused on comparing deaths of professional footballers born between 1900 and 1976 against the general population. Whilst there was some evidence of neurodegenerative disease amongst the test cases, studies could not tell us why that might be the case.

Whilst it's prudent to continue this research (particularly on modern-day professional footballers), it would be somewhat churlish to overstate the dangers now based on historic cases. Many of these individuals played in eras where footballs were heavy and footballers could kick lumps out of each other without so much as a word from the ref.

Dementia and Alzheimer's are both prevalent across society and neither is exclusive to football. Three members of my family have succumbed to these horrid ailments; none of them touched a football in their lives. This then begs the question as to whether the footballing victims would have contracted these syndromes regardless, a question that is impossible to answer.

Increased awareness as well as advances in modern technology should, of course, be the catalyst for further improvements in safety and sensible mitigation of risk. However, it should be understood and accepted that there will always be some risk just as there is when crossing the road, cutting timber, working on oil rigs, investing in stocks, undergoing surgery, smoking, drinking, gambling, etc.

We rightly protect our children from these risks but once you've reached adulthood you enjoy freedom of choice. Understand the risks, weigh-up your own personal aversion to these risks, and then make an educated decision whether or not it's for you.

Performing the sign of the cross whenever a hearse with a coffin drives past. It's something I inherited from my (Catholic) parents, and was passed through the generations. The entire family does it, instinctively. We've spoken about it, we have no idea why we do it, but we continue to do so.

QPR has made that mistake before. The club needs to strike a balance between ambition and sustainability. I can't stomach another cycle of gambling followed by 2-3 years of austerity when the gamble doesn't pay off.

Blessed with natural talent but no heart or work ethic with which to apply it. It can't be mere coincidence that:

(1) Since leaving Ipswich they've secured back-to-back promotions.
(2) Since leaving QPR we've improved markedly, particularly in midfield.
(3) Since joining Birmingham they've been relegated.

Is Reggy Cannon now the only weak link in our defence?
at 14:28 5 May 2024

Firstly, I don't consider Reggie a weak link. He needs an opportunity to show what he can do with a full pre-season under his belt. With Dunne shining at RB, Cannon is now a decent back-up option. The issue here will be whether Dunne sees himself as a RB long-term or still harbours ambitions at CB.

Next, the defensive unit as a whole may still require some tinkering in the summer. It's clear that the fitness of Steve Cook and JCS were crucial to its performance this season. If either is injured or leaves then we have another problem to solve.

Will 50 points mean safety? Prediction competition
at 01:03 5 May 2024

No offence taken, Gary, as none of what you’re saying is factual. Your argument is utterly pointless because it's based on hypothetical examples that didn't happen and never will happen. Doubling down on this nonsense is senseless and inane. Ultimately, there is only 1 abiding fact. Birmingham were relegated with 50 points, and Plymouth survived with 51. Consequently, that was the magic number. QED. Prediction competition closed.

If my grandmother had wheels she'd be a bike.

It was 51 points so Tonto was well within his right to congratulate those who predicted it.
