CUFC take on CUFC today, there can be only one winner! 07:46 - Mar 24 with 423 viewsdurham_exile

This weekend sees the Cumbrians in town, they will be making the 630 mile round trip from Brunton Park and the pressure is all on them, no really it is. Sitting in sixth spot but only just, they have difficult games against Colchester, Mk Dons and Huddersfield in the next 7 days (that sounds familiar).

Now I do not want to dwell on the Brunton Park fiasco earlier in the season when a monsoon and storm force winds engulfed the Cumbrians ground, both teams are very different to then!!! and we want a different result as well.

Carlisle also have a player called Jordan but it is Cook not Rhodes and he is on loan from the Black Cats. Definitely one to watch carefully.

Colchester welcome back Martin Rowlands (he has been missed) but I do not think that he will start. A gentle 30 mins or so second half to ease him in carefully is what is required.

So JW may well line up as follows:

Williams

Wilson Magnus Eastman White (Johnny White 200 Col U league appearances)

Bond Izzet Woody Henderson

Gillespie Odejayi

Bench:

Heath, Doogie, Massey, Sears, Rowlands

Now although the pressure is on CUFC (Carlisle that is) we need to secure the three points because we are fast running out of games and the gap must be closed between ourselves and Carlisle, Stevenage and Notts County. These three clubs will slog it out with the U’s to secure that vital 6th place.

We now have 9 games to play, plenty of points but draws must become wins:

After today:

Walsall Away
Exeter Away

Last Six games;

Hartlepool home
Bury Away
Sheff Wed Home
Bournemouth Away
Tranmere Home
Notts County Away

It will go I think to the final game at Meadow Lane on 5 May. Exciting times.

When we achieved promotion under Parky in 2006 it was the final 6 matches that ultimately put us into second place: Hartlepool Home 2-0, Chesterfield Away 2-2, Tranmere Home 1-0, Bournemouth Away 2-1, Rotherham Home 2-0 and Yeovil Away 0-0

This season the fixture list has thrown up three of those teams again and incredibly the same ground locations as well, a good omen I am sure. Anyway we have the ability, momentum and potential to obtain that 6th place.

Let’s hope that the crowd is better than last week. Come on Up the U's

Another decent, if somewhat frustrating, performance. Clearly we have become a very hard side to beat over the last few weeks but perhaps at the cost of being able to win. Still, looking at the March fixture list at the beginning of the month I expected points to be pretty hard to come by so I'll happily take the results so far.

One thing did surprise me yesterday - why the sudden reversion to 4-5-1? Our decent run has largely coincided with playing KO and Gilly as a pair and I thought we'd finally worked out that Gilly does not lead the line on his own. Unless KO was injured it struck me as a backward step, especally in a game that had been built up as a must win for any vague thoughts of playoffs to continue.
