There is only one thing that matters in cricket, the Ashes, everything else is just a sideshow.
1954, I think, was the last time we lost the first test down under and went on to win the series.
Len Hutton was captain, assisted by Peter May and Colin Cowdrey. Do we have the mindset or grit to do it again, I doubt it unless we change the management.
They invented one day cricket to save the game, for people who had a short attention span, or needed the crash bang wallop to excite them, or indeed didn't have the luxury of being able to listen to TMS for 5 days. Instead of saving it, it's killed it.
Imagine saving all year, taking time off work and flying out to support the boys with tickets in your hand for day three of a test in Australia.
Pope, Brook and Root all out flailing at balls miles wide of the stumps on day two of a test match, it is just ridiculous, when they can play 1's and 2's and wait all day for a decent ball to hit and for the bowlers to tire.

Lost the test in two sessions after lunch in the second day. Starc a different class to the rest and facing in house bowling pre test is no comparison. Only positive was bowling has a unit in the first innings, but toothless in the second . Will never compete unless get big scores on the board. |  |

Every time one of our players are sent out to the crease, it’s as if they must do a ‘Stokes’ or they will lose their place, like we’ve got to win by tea on the first day or we’ve failed.
Starc cannot bowl every over.
We need a change of management for red ball. Yes bazball works sometimes, but when it fails it can fail spectacularly as it has here. It’s the wrong approach for the Ashes. You cannot afford to go one down in that sort of fashion, the pressure is now immense and it’s all our own fault, that’s what’s so bad, we weren’t beaten by the pitch or the weather, we didn’t lose because their players are much better than ours, we didn’t lose because of the mind games. Day/night game where it swings like mad, the Aussies must be fighting over who's going to bowl and who plays in the slips.
In the same way the FA Cup is just an inconvenience to the Prem teams, test matches and the Ashes have had their day, as the money men chase the masses who just want T20 and 100 pantomime cricket.
It's the arrogance of the English management that gets me. We can just turn up at the Ashes with no proper preparation and just smack it out of the park. The 'has-beens' know nothing, it's a different game now, FFS.

Let their bowlers huff and puff all day for a wicket. Every dot ball is another ache and pain at the end of the day for the bowler.
Starc must be feeling 21 again after that match, he barely had time to get warmed up.
Stokes is just going to be the fall guy for the plonkers who are too blind to see the obvious.
Playing bazball in a test is like getting into the ring in a world title fight, with no preparation and hoping you can knock the champ out in the first round with a haymaker. It's unlikely, but it might work, in the unlikely event that it does it will be spectacular, but it's disrespectful to the sport and to the fans. [Post edited 23 Nov 11:47]
