|Contracts for 2021/22 and beyond|

The Watford model is very much one where the Head Coach is there to coach and improve the players performances and that's pretty much it. It enables them to change the Head Coach easily as there's only really one aspect to their role. Whether it works or not is a different question.

And what a day it was! Possibly the most nervous I've ever felt at a football match but it was all worth it in the end. Strange to think that Southend won the title that day and are now going to be playing non-league football next season.

Whilst they have been decent results under pressure and with a squad drastically low in confidence let's not forget that 7 of the 11 points came from home games against three of the worst teams in this division. Mullins and Tisdale have done what they've had to do but let's not get too excited just yet. At the start of the season we'd have probably expected 15-18 points from those seven matches. Steve Ball's first seven matches this season yielded 10 points with only one defeat and after 11 games we had 19 points which is a better points per game return than the current run.

All this talk of Oldham going into administration seems to have cooled somewhat. Looking at the table they're 13 points (really 14 with goal difference) ahead of Southend so if they took the 12 point hit now they wouldn't be guaranteed survival.
Incidentally I noticed that they're the top scorers in the division as well as having the worst defence. That can't happen too often although I think I recall some team both scoring and conceding 100 goals in a season, Man City perhaps? Our two games with them this season produced 13 goals which is quite telling.

To be fair Hoolahan is a class act and he's played at a much higher level for pretty much his whole career. His quality was always going to shine through as long as his legs allowed him too. You often see it when players who have had good careers drop down the divisions they stand out due to their pure ability. They're not in the lower divisions of the football league because they're not good footballers but because they're older and not quite as quick as they used to be. Vaughan will be 33 soon so he's no youngster either and Doyle is already 33.

Great job as always MFB. In what's been a pretty horrendous season this has been one of the few bright spots.

The worrying thing for me is that we generally follow a relegation battle with another one the next season. Losing is a hard habit to get out of, we've seen that first hand this season and also teams that get relegated often find it difficult the next season despite being in the division below especially at the start. I'm not sure Mullins is the right person for the job, two wins against two of the worst teams in the division isn't the greatest return and you could argue that Steve Ball did better in the equivalent number of games at the start of the season, different situation though as the players weren't super low on confidence then. Mullins is effectively another internal appointment and again an extremely inexperienced manager but until that's sorted out it's difficult to know what the squad is going to look like as managers will always have different opinions on players.

I could give it a go. I can run around a lot but not much good at the football part these days I'm afraid.

Anyone got the list of contract expiry dates for the squad? I feel that there's quite a few that are due to end this year. I'm not sure we'll be offering new deals to many of them.

Were you part of the pitch invasion in 1989 when we beat Exeter 4-0 to stay in the football league? Won our last five matches, unbeaten in our last eight . Incredible turnaround. I think that the elation of avoiding relegation is somehow greater than that of gaining promotion. I wasn't at the Preston game and I purposely avoided all the scores until the games were finished but I went crazy when I knew we'd stayed up. Watching the Preston game back the joy on the faces of both the players and the supporters is plain to see. At least it makes the season interesting I guess. That's our fourth battle with relegation since we've been at the new stadium, currently winning 3-1, hopefully we won't be having another one any time soon. You could argue that we've had four seasons where we've been in contention for the play offs so out of 13 seasons at the JCS we've had something to play for at the business end of the season eight times.

I agree, this squad is far from non league. Before Bramall and Norris left you could even argue that it was stronger than last season's squad plus it was even more experienced now. Smith's career would imply that he's better than Prosser and Welch Hayes was seen as a replacement for Jackson even before Covid-19. Comley didn't figure much towards the end of last season and Brown was like a new signing given how little he had figured previously. We've also had Chilvers playing a lot more this season and have added Sarpong-Wiredu, Folivi and Bohui plus Nouble has returned on loan. I think we had no choice to sell Bramall when we did and that was a good piece of football business on our part. Norris was a strange one for me as I always felt that he'll get you goals. I think he's a player that performs better when playing week in and week out and he obviously wasn't really figuring all that much. He's got four goals since January at Stevenage, we haven't scored much more than that in the same time period. I have no idea why the results and performances have been so poor this season but this squad, in my eyes, should be challenging at the opposite end of the table and not battling against relegation.
