I've criticised him for playing a bit too safe - passing backwards and sideways too much and getting us into trouble as a result. But he was good yesterday.

Would love him to drop the stupid bookings though.

I don't think Marti would mind him putting almost everything into the first half. He doesn't just offer a lot going forward, he also does a lot of the hard yards at the back that doesn't always get noticed, like closing down space and winning the ball back. Without a pre-season it's not surprising he runs out of steam around 60 minutes. But having Smyth and Armstrong and their pace mean that we can pin them back in the last thirty minutes or so, so it's fine for Andersen to come off around then.

Also having had so many must-not-lose games in a row has meant we haven't been able to play with the same kind of freedom we might like to. Being able to take slightly more risks might be interesting next season. He certainly looks happy playing for us and that's nice to see.

Real Madrid observations
at 07:55 18 Apr 2024

It's been going on for years. Even during matches the commentators prioritise the favoured teams. Even when they're losing the other team is barely mentioned. It's all about what Chelsea or Man U need to do to get back into the match, not why the other team are winning. I barely watch the Prem these days as it does my head in.

It's becoming like Formula 1 except instead of which team having the best car, it's which team has spent the most money. That and the fact they are allowed to hoover up all the best youngsters and then loan them out to the teams that should have had a chance to develop them is killing football across the divisions.

Thanks. That's helpful. If that's the case then I take it back. Always willing to reconsider!

What do you think about the positioning for the second one. Was it a no-win?

I don't know if we had a different keeper it would have made a difference yesterday. However, if I was playing with him I'd feel he was a liability. He seems to have got markedly worse as the season has gone on. The Middlesbrough away game, for instance, he kept us in with a series of good saves, but he seems much slower since then and isn't stopping many shots any more, especially long distance ones.

I thought he went with his wrong hand for the first one. Surely he would have had a better reach to try and stop it with his left hand rather than his right? Also he didn't seem to jump at the optimum time to save it. Not saying it was saveable but it didn't look like he gave it a good go. Then the second he was completely in no man's land. He should either have gone earlier (but I think I'd stand a better chance of tackling outside the box than him) or stayed in his ground and made himself big, allowing the defender to push him round and then making it difficult for him. Instead, he just left an open goal by half coming.

But most of all he doesn't command his area. I know his counterpart in the other team is apparently not the best but his distribution was hugely better, starting a number of attacks by throwing out the ball early. He also looked much more confident with the ball at his feet and helped move the team ten yards further down the pitch than Begovic does as he's glued to the line unless he's recklessly leaving it to give the other team an open goal.

We sold him to Sheff Wed.

I think he was on quite a wedge with us and we needed some cash. But when you think of some of the midfielders we've been through since, we might have been better keeping him.

He was definitely marmite among the fans though. I used to have an argument every week with people who thought he was useless because he didn't score enough and wasn't on the ball much. I thought he was excellent at breaking up play and closing down space. We could have really done with that yesterday,

However I do admit he was always terrible after coming back from international squads for Aus, especially once when he didn't get picked for the world cup matches, despite being chosen for the squad and I think he played in the qualifiers from memory. He was awful for months after that.

That's fascinating Pat about the MLB. I'm sure it's possible to train your brain to react differently. Either by some kind of mindfulness practice or by repetitively putting yourself in a game-like situation. For example having defenders run at you while you are practising shooting, maybe while yelling to make it more stressful. If you got used to calming yourself in a stressful match-like scenario, surely it would become easier in an actual game?

I always find it weird how often all our players favour the near post shot rather than across the keeper. Doesn't make sense to me because if you scuff a shot across the keeper, you've got the chance of someone running in and finishing it off. If you shoot near post and you scuff it, it's just an easy take for the keeper. Also keepers tend to cover near post more easily leaving a bigger target to aim for when players shoot across the keeper.

Yes agree with you and Dorse on that. We probably should have sold him when Beale came in but glad we didn't now as we would have ended up with signing Tyler Roberts-type disasters.

The Birmingham and Huddersfield game could be huge. They have to make up five and four points over us respectively.

I agree. He'd blow out of the water any wages we could offer for any other team players we wanted to attract and he's not the player he was two years ago.

Thing is both Leeds and Leicester have won only two of their last five matches - same as us. Both having a relative wobble. This part of the season throws up some really weird results. Blackburn good at getting draws which might be enough.

I can't remember what you said. Did you mean flakey in a Taylor Richards it's beneath me to play football kind of way or in a Chris Willock I have spectacular and I have dog-sh*t days kind of way?
