Farage is put under pressure to explain Reform’s “secure detention for asylum seekers” policy.

Reform’s policy is to process asylum seekers rapidly offshore in British overseas territories. When asked which such territories have agreed to this Farage had to admit that it wasn’t very practical and needed to be looked at again.

So clearly Reform made up this policy to appeal to their voters without mentioning it to the Falkland Islands, Montserrat, Gibraltar or maybe the Turks and Caicos islands.

Farage can get away with being a one topic politician because reform will never form a government. Reform has economic policies but a budget based on those policies would make the Truss/Kwarteng budget look sensible. Farage will not be asked about any other policy but immigration and that’s all he wants to talk about anyway.

I suspect that his plan is to secure annihilation of the Tory party to the point where they are left with a small rump of right wingers who will welcome him back to the fold as leader. Reform therefore becomes the Tory party going forward. He needs to win Clacton for that to happen of course and it will be interesting viewing.

Heseltine was right about Boris.

He said Boris waits to see where the crowd is going and then runs to the front of it and shouts "follow me".

The interesting thing is that nobody at Conservative central office appears to be giving him any advice on any of this stuff. They know that he can’t read a room to save his life but no one is helping him.

It’s almost as though they want him to lose…

According to Farage, Johnson, Gove, Truss, Braverman et al it was going to solve the problem.

Then they were faced with the reality of their lies. Migration from the EU countries fell off a cliff and migration from the third world skyrocketed.

Farage got what he wanted but had no power to then enact what he wanted going forward. He needed to be part of the government to do that. Now he blames everyone else.

Agreed. I would add education to that as well. Short termism from politicians whose sole interest is to win the next election has resulted in failure for health and education. We need a long term national plan agreed by all political parties and stakeholders to secure the future.

I agree. At 67 my generation is in power and has been for some time.

What a terrible mess my generation has made of things for young people going forward.

The police took a very long time looking into something that clearly wasn’t under their jurisdiction in the first place.

HMRC looked at it years ago and took no action then. They can’t go back more than 6 years anyway except for exceptional cases where there’s clearly serious fraud or tax evasion and this was never going to come under those headings.

The Tory MP who reported this to the police should have some questions to answer.

Quite.

It would also give those people a bit of money to spend in their local economy thus boosting local businesses and service providers and creating jobs.

The university has been severely hit by the drop in foreign (particularly Chinese) student numbers. 189 people have come forward to take voluntary redundancy recently. It is hoped that there will not be any compulsory redundancies. The financial situation is described as “challenging”.

The Islington millionaire clearly has a large personal vote among the champagne socialists who live in that constituency. I wouldn’t be surprised if he wins and I would guess that it will be close.

If he gets in he’ll vote with Labour or abstain most of the time so it’s largely irrelevant in the grand scheme of things.

We are desperate to get these people here to keep the NHS and care sector afloat.

Is it so unreasonable to ask if you’re a nurse in India that you can bring your children with you to work in the NHS?

A large portion of those coming in are from Nigeria and India. They are coming to work in the NHS and care sector, both of which desperately need them. This is why the government constantly goes on about immigration whilst quietly issuing visas in huge numbers for people to come here.

Meanwhile, 1.5 million are registered unemployed and a staggering 23% of people aged 16 - 64 are not in employment and most of them are not seeking employment. Britain isn’t working and we’re relying more and more on immigrants to do the work. Hence 1.25 million visas issued last year.

The small boats is a separate issue and illegal immigration is very small beer in the overall immigration picture. (29000 out of 2,500,000)

You don’t call the foreign Secretary back from an official overseas visit unless it’s a knee jerk reaction to something.

September or October with a budget giveaway would be much better but his hand has been forced…

I think that there’s been a sudden change of plan. Ministers brought back from official overseas trips suggests that this was a spur of the moment decision.

Rumours that there were enough letters received by Sir Graham Brady to trigger a vote of no confidence in Sunak by the parliamentary party and a leadership contest. I can’t see any way that this was Sunak’s preferred option so he’s called the election to spite his enemies. Sunak wanted more of today’s slightly better economic data and flights to Rwanda to start and hoped to recover some of the deficit in the polls by November.
