Heading To Gelsenkirchen Next Weekend- Eng v Serbia.
at 09:44 8 Jun 2024

Managed to get four tickets to see England. My first trip abroad to see them since Eng v Italy in 1980 in Torino - we lost 1-0.
We are flying to Amsterdam and then driving to Gelsenkirchen. I’ve pretty much driven across most of the world but not across Germany. Anyone done a similar trip and are there tolls etc across Germany?
Any advice welcome.

In fact you have to go back to Thatcher if you want to understand where the "I don't give a feck about anyone but me" attitude emanated from. Right now - something has to be done to control these idiots.
Thank God the summer has not been warm because all the ingredients are there for our cities to go up in flames.

It's a difficult watch. Society has changed beyond recognition and it's especially visible in large cities.
There just seems to be a big lawless group, who take these events as an excuse to do what they want. Alcohol and large amounts of cocaine, help them on their way and it's a feck-all attitude that prevails and spreads. Eventually, people are going to be killed - it's only a matter of time.
I am really not an individual that supports restrictions on society, but on this particular type of behaviour we need to be confronting these idiots, with some serious heavy policing.
I can remember the feared Met Police SPG back in the 70's who were seriously out of control in dealing with disorder. - I would not support their re-introduction.
We need to introduce a new riot/control unit, made up of some experienced and well-trained officers from across the UK. I would advocate a number of 2,000 officers who would be well-drilled, disciplined and heavy-handed in dealing with these type of incidents.
Make these idiots/scumbags understand that if you want to gate-crash these huge events, you will be met with a heavy-hand and not an £8ph security guard, who are the people more likely to be injured in these incidents.

Life changing moments
at 11:42 1 Jun 2024

Being unexpectedly diagnosed in 2022 with stage 3 bowel cancer at 60. That stopped me “dead in my tracks”!
Trying to manage my emotions and constant doubts about my mortality certainly was a challenge. My family and I owe an amazing surgeon and his team my life. Almost two years on I remain cancer free but am subject to six-monthly follow ups until 2027.
I’ve also made a number of lifestyle changes around alcohol and diet. I enjoy life and have more I want to do.

The 20-30 year old working groups are being taxed to the hilt. Unless, I am mistaken the Tories have pulled these groups into fiscal drag so they are being taxed more. It’s little wonder that this age group have no affiliation with the Tories.
Anyone in this group earning £25-45K is literally financially stuffed and will be for sometime. Not sure how Labour unlock that but it’s clear the Tories have chosen the over 60’s to try and win back some ground. I thought this analysis was really insightful:

People now in their 30s are the first generation to earn less than those born ten years before them since the 1930s. Record numbers of young people live with their parents, trapped by a dysfunctional housing market and unstable employment. Millennials spend a far higher proportion of their income on housing costs than the Boomers did at their age, with spiralling rental costs largely to blame. The typical family headed by a thirty year old today would take 19 years to save a deposit for a home. In the 1980s, it would have taken three years. Young people are finding things previous generations took for granted to be effectively out of reach.

Not sure how Labour are going to bridge what will eventually be a generational gap.

That by-election came not long after the Dominic Cummings Barnard Castle charade. The Lib Dem’s took the seat from Dame Cheryl Gillan who passed away unexpectedly. They won it with a swing of 25% and over an 8,000 majority. Yes HS2 and Brexit were factors, but I cannot see the Tories re-claiming that seat.

They are facing oblivion.

I live in the Chiltern Hills - real Tory land. In the past, you could put a cat up for election as long as it was a Tory and it would win!
At the weekend the local Tories were out and about and I am not kidding when I say they were being verbally assaulted by one and all. It was aggressive and loud, with everyone taking a turn to have their say.
I thought to myself, it's over for the Tories, but I am not sure they understand how much of car-crash it is going to be for them. The one-nation Tories are all gone and you can see a Trump-type outfit developing from the ashes, after the election fire, with some rather nasty individuals re-shaping the Tory landscape.
You can almost hear their battle cry "I want my country back". Having moved back to the UK from the US we really need to avoid that mantra - it will be dangerous for us all.

The scenes were horrific. But I thought back to my first (and last) time in watching England abroad. I was in Italy in 1980. Some of the violence and lunacy English fans launched into un that tournament does not bear thinking back about.
In the knockout game vs Italy in Turin it was also pretty ugly. The lads I was with got some dodgy tickets and we ended up in amongst the Italian fans who all knew we were English. They did not say a word apart from when Tardelli scored the winner late in the 2nd half.
I have tickets for Eng v Serbia with some lads and I am hoping for a better experience.

Realistic signings everyone would target?

Arthur Okonkwo - GK Arsenal. Incredible loan at Wrexham.
Sorba Thomas - Huddersfield. Was fantastic at our place.
Robbie Brady - PNE. Only decent PNE player at our place. Great distribution.

He seems a solid coach but he had some excellent players to select from. Marti just seems to have that Sexton/Venables touch about himself.
He’s intelligent,a genuine change agent and has real belief in his way of doing things. It’s obvious how good he is when you look at what he achieved this season. So important that we persuade him to stay. Hopefully, Dunne’s contract extension is a sign of Marti telling the squad he’s hanging about.

How long do we wait before Rohl and Marti are mentioned as their preferred targets?

He played tremendously well. The way I look at it if AB got injured and Joe had to step in for a run of games I think he would do very well. His handling and positioning was bang-on.

I’ve been around long enough to know that you can never predict what happens in football. In September, I was thinking with Gareth in charge we’ve no chance.
At Xmas with the 1-1 (last minute equaliser) vs Huddersfield ,I thought things might just be turning. From there, I thought we’d stay up, but that it would go the last game.
Crazy to think that if we win on Saturday and Watford lose, we will end up on the same points and who thought that might be the likely season outcome back in August?

As always you hit the spot. At 3-0 I thought about two mad R’s mates, who are no longer here and how mental they would have been during and after the game.
Marti definitely has that change factor that Sexton and Venables delivered in the way we played and how the club conducted itself.
Christian, Marti and the Board have a huge task and a wonderful opportunity in the summer, to help us move on positively, next season and beyond. Season ticket sales will be off the scale.

With Huddersfield relegated Sorba Thomas or Jack Rudoni would be decent replacements for Willock.

Was at the Leeds game in the SAR stand. Incredible occasion and atmosphere. You’re right about the attendance. I recall when I arrived at the ground there were literally thousands outside 15mins before kick-off. It was heaving. In some film you can see fans sitting in the stairways in the lower SAR stand.
I’ve always thought it was close to 38,000. I based it on the Leicester FA Cup game which was 34,000 and the Leeds attendance of 35,000. For sure, it was much more than both those games and with thousands outside.

Coventry don’t play with VAR in the Championship and that happens. The game is finished.
