This has made my blood boil. It’s just wanton vandalism of a world heritage site. Disgusting. Keith’s opening post is on the money.

If you’re a basic rate tax payer you can earn up to £1k in interest before they start taxing you, if you're a higher rate tax payer it’s £500. With the personal allowances frozen for the next 4 years, more and more people are being dragged in to the higher rate tax band. They call it fiscal drag.

Labour less popular now than under Corbyn?
at 23:45 19 Jun 2024

Your second paragraph is nonsense.

Starmer has reformed the Labour Party in turned it into something people are prepared to vote for, that takes some doing. Starmer may lack the personality of a Johnson, but look where that got us. I’m hoping Starmer will be pragmatic and sensible and is someone who understands the minutia, we need doers who know what’s going on not blue sky thinkers who get bored easily and then @@@@ it up.

Farage’s economic policies have been discredited by numerous economists and he’s proposing an insurance system for the NHS which many people aren’t aware of, what people are listening to is the immigration because whether it’s legal or illegal, many people have had enough. If the loops allowing people to work in the black economy were closed and those breaking the law were prosecuted, then people may pivot away from Reform.

Rishi Sunak's protection officer being investigated for bet on election date
at 22:18 19 Jun 2024

The police officer gets arrested while the politician doesn’t!

I’m not condoning what the police officer has done for 1 minute, but surely you can’t have 1 rule for 1 and another rule for the other. Both are in positions of trust and both should now better!

And some say the police are unaccountable - at times like this it seems they are just about the only ones who are held to account.

The big difference between 2017 and now is that in 2017 UKIP polled around 2% of the vote, Reform is polling around 16% which will impact on both the labour vote and Conservative vote. Without Reform, both parties share of the vote would be a lot higher.

Jeremy Vine sues Joey Barton ...

Barton is one of several high profile people to lose slander/libel/defamation cases including Katie Hopkins, Laurence Fox and Tommy Robinson and several national newspapers.

If people are going to comment on others, they need to ensure what they’re saying is factual and the truth, if it isn’t then they need to look out.

The recruiting process follows a structure mandated by the College of Policing, but Forces have a degree of flexibility and are able to adjust the process for their own needs, for example my local Force mandates that applicants undergo a formal interview, but some Forces just stick to the process which, depending on the quality of the applicants could be a risk. The number applying to become police officers is very low at the moment, the quality isn’t great and the number of leavers is at historical highs.

In terms of arming every police officer, it would be an enormous challenge. AFO’s have to undertake regular refresher training, ( I don’t know how often but it’s a lot OHL could probably tell us the exact number of day) and ensuring every officer had that training would be impossible to deliver without huge investment, and I mean huge.

Arming every officer would also see a massive change in the police approach to conflict and restraint, AFO’s tend not to go “hands on” because if they’re overpowered or lose control of the weapon, the criminal will have a gun! Arming every officer increases the risk of firearm discharges significantly. Mate of mine just retired from the police - he’s glad he’s out!

Putin visiting North Korea

No doubt he’s probably looking to try and scrounge more weaponry for his war in the Ukraine, they make a right pair of undesirables. Wouldn’t it be just fine and dandy if someone overthrew Putin while he was abroad.

Interesting article on the BBC today which reports that investment in the U.K. economy over the over 24 of the last 30 years is the lowest of any of the G7 countries, the performance and investment levels since the 2008 financial crash are described as “dire” and is the reason for the decrease in living standards.

Nationally, this is down to the Conservative government policy, in Wales it’s Labour and I firmly believe the lack of investment in a relief road around Newport is a major issue. I really hope Starmer exerts some pressure to get that done. Brexit, political uncertainty and planning laws are other factors.

The figures are a nonsense, the IFS and numerous other economists have come out and said as much, it’s a Truss type budget.
He’s saying what he likes because it’s unlikely he’ll ever be in a position to implement it, and if he tried it would go pear shaped - much worse than Truss. What it is doing is making life really uncomfortable for the conservatives because despite the Truss budget, they still a core support who belief that a similar budget can be introduced.

There are journalists in The Telegraph lapping it up, it’s as though Truss never existed.

They can’t strike, it’s been banned by the Police Act 1919 which was then updated by the Police Act 1996. During Theresa May’s watch the police suffered immeasurable damage.

The Conservatives claim to be the party of law and order, but it’s nothing other than a major lie. They’ve destroyed the criminal justice system and severely damaged the police.

There’s a lot of truth here, but it’s also true that a lot of indigenous people don’t want to do the type of work the immigrants do because it’s hard graft in difficult conditions for invariably minimum wage. I’ve had cause to do some work at a place which is predominantly staffed by migrant workers, when I’ve spoken to the HR manager I’m told they can’t get locals interested in working there. Work needs to pay and there needs to be a bigger difference between working and a life on benefits.

Many of the Conservative members and staunch supporters don’t see it that way, they still love Boris, feel he was badly treated and that he can do no wrong, they still see him as the knight in shining armour.
Across wider society he isn’t well liked and many see his behaviour, particularly with the breaches of the Covid legislation, Cummings, the Patterson business and then his misleading or lying as some will refer to it as , about Chris Pincher just turned people against the Party. Boris is costing them dearly.

This kind of stuff really annoys me. Politicians earn earn a lot more money than most and it really sticks in my throat when they abuse their positions to extract every last penny or in some cases fraudulently claim money at the expenses of the tax payers. There are occasions when they break the law and others where they don’t commit any offences, but it just feels wrong.
Esther McVey and her MP husband own a flat in London, the expenses rules prevent them claiming mortgage relief on a second property so he rents it. They now rent another property for themselves in London which they can claim reimbursement from the tax payer. The arrangement is totally legal, but I think it’s morally questionable.
It’s not confined to Westminster either, there’s an AM in the Senedd currently under investigation for expenses claims.

And all that’s before we take in to account directorships, lobbying and cash for questions type deals. There needs to be a huge clean up.

The levelling up exercise has been a real smoke and mirrors job. After the last GE I expected the levelling up initiative to be targeted at the places where there were higher levels of need, but it turns out hasn’t turned out as I anticipated it. Levelling up was a key manifesto pledge of Boris’s government back in 2019. The funding is in numerous different pots, but the main levelling up fund has a budget of £4.8bn and as of April, several years after it was launched only £800m of its £4.8bn budget had been allocated and £500m actually spent. Most of the money has gone to Conservative constituencies and in particular Tory marginal seats.

Levelling up hasn’t exactly levelled things up.

I don’t mind the Scots in Rugby, but I can’t stand them in football, thoughts of Anfield 77 and Cardiff a few years later. 🤬🤬

I was pretty pleased to see them get thumped tonight, but I’ve got to say they’ve got a fantastic following.

It’s not just the Senedd, it’s Westminster, Holyrood and Stormont too.

Swift investigation please SWP, if there’s a case to answer then Court asap. If there’s a case to answer but it’s not criminal, the disciplinary hearing pronto. It doesn’t make great reading and I’d imagine Andrew RT Davies wouldn’t have wanted to suspended her with a GE looming large and the Conservatives struggling, but to be fair he’s grasped the nettle and taken action whereas his party leader in Westminster passed on the betting scandal issue.
