Tuesday Diary — Taarabt lauded, Mahon staying put
Tuesday Diary — Taarabt lauded, Mahon staying put

Adel Taarabt has been the centre of attention once again following the weekend win against Coventry, while Gavin Mahon has extended his stay by a further month.

News

Rangers won the game thanks to a late goal from Wayne Routledge and afterwards manager Neil Warnock told reporters that he wouldn’t be surprised to see another new face joining the pacy winger through the entrance at Loftus Road during this transfer window. Warnock said: “We're still talking with targets. I spoke to Mr Mittal last week and he's been very supportive. Bernie and Flavio have supported me fantastically as well. We're talking about players all of the time, but I'm just delighted we've been able to bring in these three players if I'm honest. Anybody else would be a bonus to us, but I wouldn't be surprised if we get one more in before the deadline.

“I've never worked as hard to sign players as I have this week and I'm talking like 18-hour days to get Routledge and Miller. We lost Agyemang, Mackie and Walker in the space of a few days and it's bloody hard at our level to cover quality players like that. But without transfer fees, we couldn't have got anybody better than Routledge, Miller and Chimbonda and if I could get another defender in, I'd be absolutely delighted. That would be my lot and we'd have a go.

“I just think it's a really important victory, because with 19 games to go every point is vital at this stage of the season. It's so enjoyable watching us - it's end-to-end, chances galore and some of the football we play is magnificent at times. I thought we were better than them on the day and the goals were special - we finished them both really well.

“I said to Wayne at half-time he'd get a goal for us. The way we play and the freedom he has - I fully expect him to get a few goals for us between now and the end of the season."

Inevitably, after a thirteenth goal of the season and tremendous assist for the Wayne Routledge winner, much of the attention since the Coventry game has centred on Adel Taarabt who has been named in the divisional team of the week, targeted by Newcastle, and given an interview to the London Evening Standard.

Neil Warnock told the Fulham Chronicle: “You can forget a move for Tarbs – that’s stone dead certain. I’m not sure any club would want him. We give him licence to do things here he would never get a chance to do anywhere else.

“He's going to frustrate and disappoint, but what do you want him to do - win tackles or win football matches? His goal today was out of this world. He's great to have around the place."

Taarabt told the Standard’s Mihir Bose: “"Last summer, Neil rang me and said: 'I want to make you the star. Come and you will have freedom to play'. Neil said, 'Even if you lose the ball, I will have some players behind you to do the job for you defensively'. When a manager tells you, 'I want to play the team around you,' then you think, 'This manager loves me'. At half-time against Preston [in November], I wasn't playing so well. Neil knows I don't like it when the other players shout at me. So he took me to the showers and said, 'What's wrong?' And in the second half I scored two goals.

“I'm enjoying my time here. At the moment, I just want to take QPR into the Premier League. And if I do, I will feel I did my job. But I've got ambition. So, if I've got a good opportunity, then maybe I'll take it."

The deal for Mahon, the fourth month long deal he has signed with QPR this season, seems to be an odd one on the face of it with Neil Warnock currently trying to shift out Martin Rowlands, Lee Cook and others on loan and Mahon yet to make a single appearance this season and is currently out with a hamstring injury. But after the announcement today that he will indeed be staying on Warnock said: “Gavin is a good pro and I am pleased we've managed to extend his contract by a further month. He's an important member of the squad, who I believe has been instrumental in Shaun Derry having such a good season, with the knowledge that Gavin is weighting in the wings."

Championship Team of the Week: Grant (Burnley), Trippier (Barnsley), Morgan (Forest), Bamba (Leicester), Hughes (Scunthorpe), Crofts (Norwich), Taarabt (QPR), Ward (Portsmouth), Wellens (Leicester), Sharp (Doncaster), Wickham (Ipswich).

Elsewhere Rangers have taken Halesowen Town’s young Spanish winger Ruben Izquierdo on trial after he impressed against the R’s in a practice match. Town’s general manager Shaun Cunnington told the Birmingham Mail: “Ruben played against them in a trial game and they want to have a longer look at him. The lad has certainly got ability and we wish him all the best.”

Finally the latest round of international call ups has begun. Petter Vaagan Moen is in the Norway squad for their friendly with Poland on Wednesday, February 9, while young Michael Harriman has followed up a recent first appearance on the bench for our FA Cup tie at Blackburn by being named in the Republic of Ireland Under 19s for two games with Croatia taking place in the same week.

Rumours

After a burst of players coming in at the end of last week the local press says Neil Warnock will aim to trim his squad down slightly during the rest of the transfer window. Once again Martin Rowlands is being linked with a departure, but Hogan Ephraim is also now being tipped as somebody whose immediate future perhaps lies elsewhere. The Fulham Chronicle says Palace remain interested in Rowlands having been frustrated in their attempts to loan the player when George Burley was the manager. But it’s Millwall, and former Rangers’ assistant boss Kenny Jackett, who is said to be looking more closely at a temporary move for both players.

Elsewhere Sky Sports are claiming that under pressure Sheffield Wednesday manager Alan Irvine is the latest to ask about the availability of Lee Cook on loan.

Loan Watch

Joe Oastler will stay with League Two side Torquay on loan for the rest of the season. The former Portsmouth trainee has made nine starts and six sub appearances for the Gulls including a late cameo in a weekend draw against Gillingham and will now stay at Plainmoor until May.

Rowan Vine played the final half hour of MK Dons’ 1-0 win at Dagenham and Redbridge on Saturday – a game settled by a 93rd minute howler from our former keeper Tony Roberts who allowed Mark Carrington’s tame shot to squirm through him and into the net in vintage style.

Mikele Leigertwood is still yet to lose in a Reading shirt, a 1-1 draw against Hull at the weekend clocked up a ninth appearance for the midfielder without a defeat to his name. Although a similar run being enjoyed by Max Ehmer at Yeovil came to an end with a 1-0 defeat by Rochdale at the weekend the QPR man was part of the Glovers side that held on for a 2-2 draw at Sheff Wed tonight despite being reduced to nine men by our old refereeing friend Trevor Kettle.

Former R’s

Bad boy Leon Jeanne continues to clock up the clubs at an alarming rate. Just weeks after signing for Bath City in the Conference he has been allowed to join Zamaretto League side Cinderford Town. Manager Paul Weeks said: “We've brought in Leon as he's an experienced player with plenty of quality and he's with us until further notice. He's more than capable at playing at this level and he's got bucket loads of ability. With Nick still doubtful after the kicking he got at Andover last week, we needed to bring someone else in and we're hopeful Leon can do a job."

Gareth Ainsworth made the League Two team of the week after scoring the only goal of the game for Wycombe v Rotherham while his former team mate at Loftus Road Paul Furlong scored twice for Kettering as they beat Richard Pacquette’s Eastbourne Borough 3-0 at home in the Conference.

There was however no fairy tale in the League Cup for our former trio of Damien Delaney, Mark Kennedy and Tamas Priskin as Arsenal scored three times in the second half to overcome a 1-0 first leg deficit and beat Ipswich in the semi final.

Championship Shorts

- Nottingham Forest moved into the play off places with a 1-0 victory against Bristol City in one of their games in hand on Tuesday night. Elsewhere Barnsley won 2-0 at Doncaster and Portsmouth were beaten 2-1 at home by Burnley to make it four points from two away games at the start of Eddie Howe’s Turf Moor reign.

- Middlesbrough’s side has been further depleted with midfielder Gary O’Neil joining David Wheater through the exit door and joining West Ham for £3m. Elsewhere manager Tony Mowbray has defended out of form striker Kris Boyd after he was jeered by bhis own fans during a weekend draw with Preston. Mowbray said: “He's giving it his very best shot. But goals have been hard to come by for him. Things aren't falling his way, but it's not through a lack of desire."

- Sheff Utd have signed Michael Doyle on a free transfer from Coventry bringing to an end the player’s seven year association with the Sky Blues. Manager Mickey Adams said: “He is a known quantity who has worked for me before. He will bring experience and competition for places in midfield.”

- Millwall have signed Darren Purse on a free transfer from Sheffield Wednesday, and added Arsenal youngster Craig Eastmond to their ranks on loan until the end of the season. Arsenal have also allowed Henri Lansbury to stay with Norwich on loan for the rest of the season.

- Hull have extended the loan of Aston Villa keeper Brad Guzon until the end of February but may have been done over somewhat by defender Kamil Zayatte. The French defender asked to be released from his deal to spend more time with his family in his homeland at the end of last week, only to sign for Turkish club Konyaspor today. Hull hold the player’s registration and must be compensated.

- Rangers say they are trying to agree a deal with Derby’s Kris Commons who has refused to sign a new contract at Pride Park. His deal expires at the end of the season.

Gary O'Neil's signing for West Ham is a good signing. I believe he's a really decent player. One I wouldn't mind to see wearing the hoops shirt one day (alongside with Noble and Boa Morte to name 2 other Hammers).
As for Boyd, the holder of the most goals scored in the SPL, it shows that the Championship is indeed trickier than the league across the border. Nothing new here...

I see you upset some coventry fans with your 'ill-informed' and 'media influenced' opinions on Coventry's err style of play Clive, you really should do more research on our opponents before offering an opinion!! BTW What's holding up the Shittu deal? He became a free agent last Friday and was apparently 'blown out of the water' by the offer QPR made him.

Yeh, you've got to watch out for these lazy journalists up at 1am writing reports based on pre-conceived ideas put forward by other media.

Shittu - pass, no idea.
