Monk Drops Leon Coaching Hint

If ever there was someone who understood the value of obtaining coaching badges whilst you are still playing then it is Garry Monk who of course came from the playing side to take charge of the Swans just 18 months ago.

Monk spent time earning his coaching badges whilst he was playing and we know that he was effectively groomed by the club for a managers position although I am not sure that maybe he expected to get the chance quite as soon as he did.

However, when he got the chance then he grabbed it with both hands and nobody could really claim that he has been anything other than a complete success since the Swans took that chance on him.

Leon Britton is another one now who is doing his coaching badges and after the confirmation that he is staying at the club that came out this week then you have to wonder whether the Swans have earmarked another one of their legends for a different role in the club when he eventually decides that his playing days are over.

"I'm sure Leon has a few years left in his legs to worry about playing," said the Swansea boss.

"He'll want to play as long as possible, but I've said all along, those guys who have been here all along, that know the club and have seen how it's been built, they are invaluable.

"I do think that afterwards the club will look at Leon in that kind of way. He may have a coaching role or some type of role within the club.

"That experience is priceless and to give that to the kids would be great when he does decide to call it a day.

"He could finish his career here, with his experience and the way he is, he will always drive forward, push the group and push himself to play.

"It's great for the younger lads to see him every day and learn from someone like him.

"I'm sure Leon would love to finish his career here and it's up to Leon. He's earned that right. I'm happy with him and he's happy to be here."

Monk is certainly right that it is important because of the way that we have set the club up that we have people close to it that understand what it means to us as fans but also how it works from the inside and keeping the likes of Leon involved have benefits that stretch far beyond any coaching role or anything else that he may be given.

For now though we still have the opportunities to enjoy Leon the player and we know just how good that is
