Bikes in London
at 15:30 31 May 2024

You just lost your bet about working from home, I cycle to work in the west end and have done for thirty years. I said I was also a driver so pay whatever road tax is now called, and have passed my test. The numerous restrictions and regulations people ask for are impractical because of hire bikes, childrens' bikes, (shall we nick four year olds with stabilisers) occasional bikes out for a ride in the park of a summer and besides are not necessary because so few accidents and injuries are caused by bikes compared with cars. If I have an accident it is me who gets killed or maimed, not the car driver. That makes me pretty accountable to my family.

The point is we all need to share the road, slow down, take care, acknowledge that the roads are for everybody including cyclists, some of whom are idiots, but most are just trying to get where they're going just like you.

If you really think most motorists obey all the rules have a look next time you are at a junction, and see how many do not indicate, especially when turning left. That is a potential death threat to a cyclist, but it happens scores of times every day.

Nowhere in the world that I know of regulates cycling in the way some on here are asking for, it simply isn't practical, and all it would do is stop people cycling, which we are trying to increase.

Sorry but motorists (and I am one) have to accept that things have changed, 20 mph in London, cyclists have priority and that's how it should be.

The vitriol on here is ridiculous. I am a cyclist, but also a driver occasionally and pedestrian, most of us are. But I know that as a cyclist I am part of the solution, not the problem. It can only be a good thing that there are more cyclists in London. So why have I been spat at by drivers, regularly abused, and once intentionally knocked off ?

Of course some cyclists are twits, but most drivers (maybe even me when in my car) seem to think the road is just for them. It isn't and increasingly we are all going to have to share with all manner of electric vehicles of every kind. So get over it and stop whingeing about people on two wheels.

Tom Waits. Greatest lyricist of his age.
Ronnie Lane, the ultimate English melodist. Just lovely.

I suspect my Aunt Glads' Shepherds Bush blue rinse eleven could have beaten us 5-0 at that moment in time.

I agree about the 'nice' bit. I guess as QPR fans we love to wear a hair shirt, but I want a crowded grotty concourse, I like the smell of burgers and onions off a stall, I would like a little more leg room, but have no desire to be comfortable. when I watch a game, I like feeling hemmed in by fellow fans, feeling the atmosphere rather than feeling like I'm watching a game in an airport lounge. If I wanted to watch in comfort I would stay at home. An old school football ground is much more to my old school tastes.

Happy Zamoraaaaaaa Day
at 16:04 26 May 2024

Why don't we petition to get Bobby Zamora day made into an official national holiday. We could all have the day off to get drunk and re-watch the game, except in Derby where they have to go to work as usual.

Do we want Leeds to lose because they are Leeds, or win so that we can get rid of them?

Think there are also other factors at home. Noticeable increase in foreign fans, not the prem league glory hunter types, but groups of largely men who want an old school football experience and love coming to HQ. Scandinavians, Germans etc who come, love it, come again and bring their mates.

As for the young kids, which I love to see, price is important. They can (just about) afford to go to games, which their mates who support the scum or Arsenal or even Fulham can't. And once here they are hooked by the atmosphere, intensity and proximity. All reasons to keep Loftus Road

Better than Crystal Palace 6-0

One thing the Palace game had, which Leeds lacked, was a female streaker running topless along the gantry in front of South Africa upper. She seemed very happy.

The LFW Confession Box
at 16:08 29 Apr 2024

It was two away games for me. After Watford I said on the train home, to anybody who would listen and some who tried not to, we can only go down from here, nailed on relegation. The worst opening day performance in the 56 seasons I've been watching this mob and it didn't get any better. Leicester away was revelatory, we did a brilliant job that day and suddenly hopes were raised. I wavered after Wednesday at home, but felt pretty safe from that point on. We are not a league one club and the fans made sure we never felt like one this year. Our role in this should not be underestimated.

at 15:16 28 Apr 2024

Brilliant piece Clive. Sat with my boy who is now a man and we hugged and we cried. He was there for Oldham at home but so small then he can't really remember it, and we said that Friday was the best night at HQ we've had together. Something has happened/is happening: a buzz, a thrill, an affirmation of all the reasons we love this crazy club. We may go on to finish 16th next season, but it feels like a corner has been turned, a future path has been found. No more talk of leaving LR please, no more wishing to be another, better team, this is who we are and where we live. This is why we come and more and more people seem to want to join us. Bring it on, I love this club.

The JD effect
at 16:36 27 Apr 2024

When trying to analyse the reasons we turned this season around, it is important not to underestimate the Jimmy Dunne effect. Of course appointing MC was the true catalyst, and it must have been his choice to transform our struggling, sluggish, error prone centre half into a joyously rampaging full back. But the way that Jimmy responded to that was incredible and invaluable. His spirit, his drive, his fearless, skilful runs and of course That Goal, have been transformational. Even on the bad days he never gave in, and he seemed to raise the spirits of fans and fellow players alike. Just seeing the big man giving everything was to believe that we could and would be better, and he might be my personal player of the year. Love that man.

Sorry for being old and stupid, but do these people just sit in their mum's back room and talk about the game? What is that about? Do we have them? Or is it just a Chelscum thing?
