| Forum Reply | What is your second sport. at 23:22 15 Jun 2024
Since moving to the US I've gone back and forth on basketball. On the one hand it still has incredible iconic moments like buzzer beaters. But because of the nature of the action, give or take a 50% chance that any possession is going to result in a score, it's effectively incredibly low stakes for each possession until the last 5 minutes of the game, so it's kind of hard to get really worked up and dialed in until then. And probably no more than 30% of games are really still close by that point. If you're watching a game and it is one of the dramatic ones, then it's up there in terms of entertainment with any other sport. But the fact that there's a lower likelihood it will happen AND if it doesn't, almost none of the game has been exciting AND when it is dramatic, by definition it drags on with a timeout every other play, I can see why it turns some people off. It would be like if 70% of football matches a team was 3-0 up by halftime, the rest of the game would just feel like going through the motions a bit. Personally it's still my second favourite US sport after the NFL (which I enjoy even more than football these days) but I can see why it doesn't get the same amount of love. |

Bit beyond me with the details of the contract, but let's say he's on 10k a week just to pick a nice round number. If we paid all that now, wouldn't that cost us more in "real" terms than paying it as expected during the length of the contract, with inflation and all? 10k in 3 years time is probably equivalent to 9k today |

Takes two to do that though. Don't think he wants to sign long term. |

Exciting that "Harry Kane is going to come into his own" during this tournament, that's good to know. Just been messing about for the last decade has he? |

Been a while since I've been back in the UK so had absolutely no idea this was a thing now. Doesn't seem like any of the landlords are the ones pushing this from some of the stories, so does the entire tone of the evening come down to the first person who wants a drink when the bartender is busy? That person has the potential to set the tone for the whole evening - one person at the bar and they're serving someone - do you a) stand patiently at the bar b) politely stand back and give some space Quite the pressure on that decision now! One person standing back isn't an issue, but then when a 3rd person comes and sees a line... |

Wholeheartedly agree with this. Except for the coming unstuck at tournaments part, I'd argue he's gone well beyond most managers from the past |

At one point there was a picture going round for a furniture store called Sofa King. Their delivery van had their slogan on it: Our prices are Sofa King low" |

When I was in my early 20s, rented a house with a couple of buddies mostly on the basis that it was literally across the road from a pub. One nice perk being, if we were in the beer garden out front and one of the girlfriends was in the front room and we managed to catch their eye, we had the sign language for "get a frozen pizza in the oven and wave to us when it's done" down to a science. |

Gotta get Danny Maddix in there surely? Feel like Simon Barkers mullet must have gotten pretty close to allowing him into the hairband xi at one point. |

Would add: Dichio v Wolves Adel's Swansea goal, Joe Allen still wakes up in a cold sweat about that Eze vs Stoke as a team goal |

Would also stop all the nonsense of a) playing B teams, because the non European teams would see this as a legit chance for Europe b) whining about fixture congestio |

This thread does raise an interesting point about what makes a "legend". I think in all honesty the game is just different now to 20 years ago, especially when it comes to longevity and loyalty. I'd call Eze a "modern legend" in the same vein as Adel, Clint Hill etc, but while he may be their equal as a player, he clearly doesn't share the same legend status as the likes of Macca, Marsh etc. If nothing else, he's A) the club record transfer fee and single handedly kept us solvent B) the first player in what, 3 decades? to come through as a youngster, make his first team debut and play for England |
| Forum Reply | Marti Contract?? at 00:27 23 May 2024
I've always thought that the first 12 months of a contract should be completely and utterly guaranteed. Can't sack a manager, even if you want to (same with players) and they can't walk away. Would mean clubs would actually have to do proper due diligence about who they appoint. Would also mean we avoid the ridiculous Beale nonsense AND players wouldn't be able to just down tools because they don't like the manager - they know they're stuck for at least 12 months. Sign a new contract, same thing applies, first 12 months you can't move on or be moved on. |

I believe the key for us financially is that Eze gets a start. Let's hope one of those pre tournament friendlies Southgate gives him a crack from the beginning |

I'd imagine 2 of the judges are told in advance you vote for fury, you vote for usyk. That way we get a little more controversy and a more likely rematch. |
