That is statistically false.
525 passes and 58% possession today.
The initial iteration of Martin ball was 75% possession and 750+ passes. We are making less passes in our own danger zone now and from a narrower starting point.
It’s a huge difference from what we are seeing, it’s nothing to do with doing it better, it’s to do with doing it less. |  |

The mistakes with ball at feet haven't got fewer. They've just been punished less because we're not a man short at the back. An issue raised by some on here more than twelve months ago and only recently corrected, hopefully permanently, by the guy paid quite a lot of money to notice such things before the supporters do.
We have always, ALWAYS had a squad good enough to do a lot better than the run of results served up between November and March. Recent wins and performances amply demonstrate that. It's got nothing to do with process. It's got everything to do with not sending a team out to play in a stupid way. |  |

Great post.
I agree thought he had reverted to type but the first half display ultimately won us the game.
Shame we let them back into the match, imo due to RM not making subs any earlier but we weathered the storm and ice cool joel finished them off.
I just hope and pray that the owners put up to keep piroe,manning and get 2 quick wing backs, if that happens then we will have a good chance of getting and staying in the play offs. |
I thought we handed advantage to Preston once Joe event off ,possibly one of his finest performances for us , The ref tried too hard to let the game flow but in one direction only which ultimately led to it all kicking off I thought the linesman on the East had a frozen shoulder because he seemed to struggle to make any movement with his arm all in all plenty to talk about and an entertaining game |  |

the difference is we are playing out from our half not playing around in our half.....so often we have just kept possession by passing sideways and backwards without looking to go forwards....tonight we looked to use the ball in attack not just to keep possession | |

That game pretty much summed up our season . First half quick passing into space and accurate passes forward and a well deserved 3 nil lead at half time.
Second half we sat back too much short passing under pressure as PNE quickly closed us down and pulled back two goals. We still had chances from breakaways Then after Fulton was elbowed in the back of the head and was left on the ground no fouls given and play allowed to continue. Needless to say as the foul was in front of the dugouts both benches got involved in a mass brawl soon to be joined in by all the players.
Fortunately in the additional 9 minutes we scored our fourth.

That's what happens when you beat the press......it allows you to play out quicker hence the passing numbers come down as shown in DrP statistic post.
The passing is done to draw the press, granted that PNE played much higher and that helped us massively.......this is why our pass numbers and possession % is higher against a team that sits deeper.
It's quite simplistic really........i mentioned it months ago and got knocked for it and surely will again but I am used to the response taken it's not what people want to see so they wil do their best to try and make other alternative scenarios to prove otherwise.
If you get through a high press with a team playing a high line then there will be fewer passes, you will get on the front foot facing the oppo goal and naturally possession % will be lower........its basics when learning your badges in that scenario of an opositions set up in how I explained. |  |

He is giving credit, he’s saying it’s due to these obvious changes that we are now starting to play better.
They are changes that shouldn’t have to have been made though, they should have been the way from day 1. We have wasted nigh on 2 seasons but he is now starting to play like we said he should and even now playing some width, albeit non natural width after casting away anyone with a modicum of natural wide ability.
Anyone who thinks it’s just the “same but better” shouldn’t be allowed near a football. It’s either extreme lack of footballing knowledge or an inherent need to cover previous a stances or acknowledge others were correct.
In your case I would suggest it’s probably a mix of the two. | |

Manning up front who would have thought of it.
Team setup worked perfectly in the first half Cooper protecting Latibeaudie and Cullen protecting Darling, Allen and Grimes allowed by a solid back four to do the controlling of the midfield, Manning and Piroe chasing back to leave the an opposition player sometimes with 3 players closing them to regain possession higher up the field.
Some of the forwards movement was excellent and found plenty of spaces for the ball to be moved swifting and devastatingly forward.
Best half of football we have seen in a long time.
Preston up their game in the second half and closed us down a lot better and cut off our out balls to the feet of our forwards, did we drop deeper after their first goal, yes and it was only the substitutions bringing on Ntcham which seemed to allow us to become a threat up front again.
Questioned the first lot of substitutions which didn't do the trick but happy that combined with the second it did.

100%......been saying this for ages but it's not what people want to see because it goes against what they think.
The last 18 months, if I was a visiting manager then I would just sit deep with 2 banks of 4 and 2 quick ouktets up top, keep it tight and protect the lines and have the too 2 ready for the mistakes in our defence with the ball..........those mistakes have dried up, defenders more comfortable in the ball and moving it quicker.
When teams sit deep, we play it around more trying to force the press from the front 2, this then means that the players from the bank of 4 get pulled out to cover and then the final bank of 4 does the same and then we play the ball forward to exploit the gaps. | |

No back tracking from me and I have probably been one of the most vocal in criticism of Martin but if you read the thread happy to praise him after Wdnesday.
That said what it seems is all his supporters fail to see the changes in formation and tactics that have brought our recent success and let's not run away with ourselves given the run of form prior to the Bristol and Cardiff games.
I'm fed up of hearing the excuses how teams come to sit deep maybe yes at home as their managers have read all Martin's interviews about how he will always play the nine way hut when opposition teams are at home where they will he looking to attack how come we sit on the ball have 80% possession yet still lost
It appears Martin is finally starting to learn towards the end of his 4th season in management his ideal doesnt work....funny how the same players many were posting here earlier this season as not good enough were the ones who delivered that great first half on Wednesday.
we hear this crap that the.process is finally coming good but we play differently now than previously.
Second half Wednesday substitutions were not great and Martin again reverted to his favourite set up we were not as effective buwe actually didnt crumble a la Bournemouth last season or other games this season but went on to get the 4th goal

So the process is coming good then.
I disagree with the changing of formations, we played four different formations at Wigan and two I noticed on Weds. But that’s just as I see it. | |
