Season Ticket Prices & Details
at 14:50 28 May 2024

So 450 were sold in the first week according to the clubs twitter feed. A lot less than I was expecting. Just read that Owdums season ticket sales at the end of their early bird sales period are down 10% year on year - but they are happy because they put the prices up by c10% so the have the same revenue.

Must admit I am not at all motivated to buy one this season. I am unhappy watching the style of football we play and as an exile I am beginning to question my sanity in travelling to Rochdale evey game. I might snap out of it by the time we get to the end of pre-open sale period.

They fly into Walney airfield nowadays.

The BAE story today is one of heavy investment and there are no short term jobs. They have 20+ year contracts with the MOD and that means big infrastructure investments. BAE have bought Debenhams and other town centre buildings to build out state of the art training sites. They really are taking on 1000+ apprentices this year and all will have jobs for life if they choose to stay there. The Government wants 3,000 new homes built in Barrow to support the growth in the BAE based workforce. It is a massive turnaround story compared to 30 years ago.

Did you know that Barrow now has the highest disposable income (after housing costs) as a percentage of income than any other town in the UK? The football club should continue to do well. There is nothing else to compete within 50 miles.

True, because they lost their bottle at the end of the season. But the majority are surprised.

Barrow have done remarkably well over the past 5 seasons or so and the town is loving the progress. There has been a buzz about it - a bit like our period under Hilly when we had to pinch ourselves. They have built a core support of around 2500 and managed to enjoy decent cup runs and good away followings. The Board has ambition, but they need to be careful that the decision isn't reckless and they end up falling back.

One thing I find strange about Barrow is that both Holker Street and the rugby club are next door to each other. Both stadiums are run down by modern standards. They could merge and build something that the town could be proud of that has great facilities etc. With significant investment in the town just now with BAE taking on thousands of apprentices and engineers to manage our submarine projects, they could really be on the up. You can't get a hotel room in Barrow for love nor money most days in the week - it is booming just now.

Of course volunteers need training on systems and processes. But once that is done they are a free resource. Lots of organisations take advantage of the generosity of the active 60-70 year olds. I work in a charity where we have 120 of them - and some work on admin roles, safeguarding etc. Just needs a bit of effort and a mindset change. Isn't that what Dale in the Community is about.

To be fair, I fear that admin costs at the club are being "optimised" to ensure we are sustainable. The Ogdens statement did say more cost cutting has to come. The season ticket approach is all about streamlining costs and trying to move as many people as possible onto digital (no human intervention) systems. It is the way of the world.

Of course we could use the model favoured by so many non league clubs and seek volunteers that might help in the ticket office or elsewhere for periods of peak demand. We have already sought a volunteer for the shop.

When you think about inflation over the past 4 years, a 15% increase this time around is still below inflation. Surprised that the Sandy Lane end is still so cheap - can't be many grounds in this league where a season ticket is just £200.

Note that these prices are for digital tickets. An additional £5 is added if you want a plastic card. I can see why the club want to migrate to digital where possible - but with mobile coverage awful at Spotland on the 02 network - I can see a challenge here. But we all have a choice and those that want a card can still get one.

Club Statement. Deal done
at 09:39 10 May 2024

...and lets not forget that they also bought the MH shares back at over £2 and those shares are now worth next to nowt. To have put close to £1m into the club is quite remarkable for a man that doesn't own a business where he can make that money back. His family are forever poorer for trying to do the right thing.

The criticism and personal vendetta's aimed at them were disgraceful. Calling for him to be ousted were disgraceful. As you say Judd, they have lost a fortune. They would have been financially better off letting the club fold and get some cash back being a major creditor. But they didn't. Far more honourable than some. It would be nice if the haters were to apologise and then we can all move on.

We now need to see what happens as the new journey begins. I am not expecting it to smell of roses as we steer the good ship Dale on an even keel and steady course. There will be bumps in the road - there always are. Good luck to Gateshead this weekend.

Fair Game statement to the FA
at 11:56 2 May 2024

The National League supported the abolition of the FA Cup replays and have been in discussions with the Premier League about us joining together in a new cup compeition.

https://theathletic.com/5450014/2024/04/26/premier-league-national-league-compet

The comment that the Premier League will be subsidising the competition because we will be allowed to retain the gate receipts is a little patronising. These B team players have to have games whether in the reserves, the youth set up or a National League mainstream team. And the National League is clearly out of touch with its own clubs on this one

Hartlepool sack Kevin Phillips......
at 15:49 30 Apr 2024

Not quite true. Phillips had ambitions for South Shields that the chairman decided he couldn't afford to support. He made it clear that whilst promotion was brilliant, the club had to reign in budgets to manage on a sustainable way. The Chairman has cancer and also decided to put the club up for sale so he could focus on his family. Kevin Phillips did a wonderful job there and I would be delighted if he joined us if there was a vacancy. Whether we could match his ambitions his another story.

Fa Cup replays
at 11:24 28 Apr 2024

So now we know - the National League were happy with the proposals on FA Cup replays and have been working on a new competition that will be regionalised with the under 21 teams of the Premiership and the National League teams. The competition is said to start around Christmas (just when our pitches are at their worst) and lead to a final at Wembley.

Given the number of club announcements at the time of the FA Cup replay news, I doubt the National League clubs had any idea. Once again the Premiership look to be trying to feather their nest and develop their talent and seeing of they can find ours too. There will be no crowds and we will have to pick up the costs. I hope we say no thanks

Gateshead
at 10:45 22 Apr 2024

Fair enough

Of course all this could have been avoided had Gateshead Council been more helpful. There is a backlash in the North East on this one. The council have been closing leisure centres to save money and want to either sell off, or let a private business or charitable trust, take over what is left including Gateshead Arena. Rather than stipulate that any new incumbent has to honour a 10 year lease, they are arguing they don't want the transfer of assets to be an issue because of a long lease. Personally I think they have lost their commonsense here as the facility should be for the benefit of the community first, second and third, and not about making the transfer to a third party operator easier. I suspect a lot of councillors will lose their seats next month. The council leader wants to take over the buses whilst trying to sell off what is left of leisure facilities.

The dispute and challenge has been going on for some time. The National League have been arguing with the EFL to allow Gateshead to continue.

If I was Aldershot I would be ringing the lawyers today. Surely they should take the place rather than give Solihull a bye
