For me that was most disappointed been in a while. Not because we lost, but how we just didn't look like we could kill the game off. Strange performance. Should of wrapped it up in first half. I hope penny has dropped with this team. Too many times we don't kill games off. Matos has set a bar to perform and the team didn't reach that today.

I haven’t got carried away with the victor Matos bandwagon. He’s done a brilliant job with what he’s got. But we still haven’t dealt with the elephant in the room. We are not physical enough. Until we sort that out, we will always have games like today. 80% possession at some point, and loose 2 nil. If we’re looking at going forwards as a club, this has to stop.

I don’t know Steve but a lot today was down to our own doing rather than the opposition. As Shandy said above it was redolent of a Sheehan / Williams game. Surging forward but stopping and passing back.

I watched, but not closely spent most of it trying to keep my eyes open, turned over at H/T to watch the end of the rugby, well the Mrs did, I turned back after it finished and we were 1 down.

We beat Sheffield Wednesday OHL no posts. We lose to Derby OHL 12 posts after the game. Nobody can deny the facts, he just lives it when we lose.

Great point
This is a physical league
Our latest signing is another lacking in physicality
Playing pretty doesn’t work
EOM Ronald Galbraith Widdell , Nunez
It’s ridiculous
Derby like al teams above us are far bigger

Iesu don’t we learn ?

Galbraith more than deals with physicality, Nunes displayed at Derby he has the ability.

The issue today was negativity and an unwillingness to turn possession into goals through a lack of awareness to see the passes forwards. Had they done so the game would have been won.

I’m in agreement with Liam this was too close to Russel Martin ball. Players seem to be encouraged to go back all the time and only choose a really safe pass. That isn’t in any way anything to do with what is being referred to as ‘DNA’ or ‘Swansea Way’ that’s just another example of boring, predictable and negative football.

A great believer in taking anything you like to wherever you want to.

Completely agree. Matos, who has been fantastic so far, has to shoulder the blame for that. Whether it was tactics or mentality, we didn’t have the mindset of driving at Derby, committing their players or trying the higher risk passes that could have opened them up.

Whenever we don’t play well, people will blame Cullen, Ronald and Eom in that order. Fulton would have got it too if he’d started. It wasn’t down to individuals yesterday, we were held at arms length by an organised but limited side, who let us have possession and effectively forced us into playing like we did under Martin. Eustace out smarted him.

Derby set up not to conceded first half, we should have with a bit more nous at least cone goal.

It would have been the same if they hadn't scored so early, that goal made us us push on therefore leaving gaps which made it better for them to attack.

Their only weapon is a set piece, without that they arent much.

Watford were far better than them attacking wise, derby have a better defence that's why they are up where they are.

How many on here would have taken draws away at Watford and Derby?

Watford deserved more when we played them and we deseved more yesterday on the first half performance but we won the Watford game and lost yesterday, so we came out 1 pt better off.

You take the rough with the smooth.

First sentence sums it up. We lacked that bit more nous.

Derby and Watford were fairly similar games. If we’d scored first yesterday, we probably would have seen them off.

I don’t think we did deserve too much from that first half to be honest. As others have said, it was like a Russell Martin team. Plenty of territory and possession, but no penetration in the final third. I don’t think we created one decent chance.

As much as I’m a big fan, that’s an issue for the manager. Point I was making was that the same players get blamed whenever we struggle. Sometimes it’s justified, others like yesterday, they weren’t any better or worse than anyone else. No one had a great game, no one was atrocious. Derby just shut us down as a team

OHL posts as he feels
Get over that
Then ask why we lost
When you lose , more lessons learned than wins
Yesterday two goalsxdrom two corners

Every time Cullen EOM Ronald get the ball , it’s wasted
All three started

We still waste Galbraith as we didn’t bring on a full back who’s fit “ or Ready”

These foolish things

I see no real improvements under Matos. If we had as good a squad as some think, we should be much more consistent and positive.

The team selection sometimes puzzles me. EOM, Ronald, Cullen shouldn't be starting

Good points Keith
I lost count of The number of times we turned back from crossing positions about wide and slowed a fast break down and turned back in midfield ,we played into Derby’s hands yesterday ,made it easy for them ,a quick cross causes panic in defence but we were reluctant to play the ball in,whether that is down to Matos instructions or the player on the spot I don’t know, but you have to get the ball in the box to score and we don’t do it often enough
They just sat back and waited for set pieces and scored 2 goals ,Eustace has watched us and knows Vigaroux,as tall as he is won’t come off his line for high balls , both their goals came from balls into the 6 yd box ,most keepers contest those but Vigs , who is a brilliant reaction save keeper and has saved us in games this season never does
We conceded a mirror image of their second goal a few games ago when Stamenic failed to to jump against a tall player ,Cam should have been marking Agyemang

Centre backs tend to mark each other at corners. Playing devils advocate, if you were setting up to defend a corner against us, who would you put your best markers on?

He still should have been marked properly though. No excuse to give a player like that a free header

Derby County v Swansea City : Match day thread on 17:40 - Feb 14 by wwcigne

What they did was play for set pieces and from open play get the crosses in first time hoping for a break

I think Eustace knew we’d baulk at quick delivery and was happy to watch us playing sideways and back ,knowing they’d have chances and they did and they took them
Surely Matos saw what we saw yet allowed it to go on,we could have got something today if we’d have been more direct and that’s what hurts

We’re not going to get anything from games by passing it back constantly and refusing to cross and being so negative

All any team has to do is get crosses and corners in. We have a stopper who is nailed to the goal line. The opposition have free headers in the 6-yard box week after week after week. We need a goalkeeper, not a stopper. We need someone who can dominate his penalty area. Until then, it's free headers every week for the opposition. Derby County did their homework and exploited our glaring weakness. Full credit to their coaching staff. It wasn't a case of hoping for a break. It was a well thought out gameplan.

Agyemang had a free header later on too , Vigs pulled off a great goal line save with that one but we still allowed him the chance,we didn’t learn at all

Point I was disagreeing with was that Burgess should be marking him at corners.

Completely agree, he should still have been properly marked for his goal and the centre backs should be on him during open play.

Won’t be popular, but that defeat is on Matos for me. Doesn’t mean I don’t think he’s been a breath of fresh air. He just got it wrong yesterday.

Agree with you
You’re probably right about Burgess marking the CH but we need to find an answer for marking tall forwards at corners even just jumping with them to put them off would help and be better than allowing free headers
Oh and putting early crosses in up front would help too

Correct and disconcerting to see and hear him in Martin mode post game
I’m very disappointed as he’s been a breath of fresh air
Next game should truly see if he’s learnt
As regards Burgess, a poor game so maybe Ward could start and give him a reboot or is WArd not ready yet
We needed to bring in players who were ready in the window and didn’t
Wales departure was and is unforgivable no matter what crap some say
He was brought in for US to develop not Huddersfield Town

Stamenic is the obvious answer physically, though he has lost his man a couple of times at set pieces. I’m not sure who was meant to be on Abemyang yesterday.

Either way, you’re right, no one should be getting a free run at a header direct from a corner, especially a tall, powerful striker.

To add to the frustration, we are in the habit of not having a defender on the far post from corners.
