What Are The Odds On Saints ?
Thursday, 10th Aug 2017 10:21

Thinking of having a bet on Saints winning the Premier League this season or just having a flutter on one of our transfer targets, we take a quick look at the market with two days to go before the new season.

Some would say that you have to be mad to be a Saints supporter, tha being the case there must be the odd one or two who are willing to have a bet on us winning the Premier League , the bookies rate us 10th favourite at 500/1, stangely enough Leicester are 9th probably due to their shock win 2 seasons ago, Everton in 7th are 90/1 and then after that it shortens massively, although Spus at 10/1, Arsenal at 12/1 and Liverpool at 13/1 do offer the chance of making a little money.

A top 4 finish is still a big ask, but you can get 28/1 on that with us 8th favourite in that market.

We seem to have our niche amongst the bookies with 25/1 available to those doom and gloom merchants for us to be relegated and that makes un 13th favourite for the drop.

Perhaps a market we could feature in is top Premier League scorer, Manolo Gabbiadini is 40/1 to achieve that ranked 10th, Charlie Austin is at 50/1

The transfer market is a fun bet, indeed given that Saints and Liverpool arent getting on the bookies still think our most likely signing will be Mamadou Sakho at 4/1 followed by Bacary Sagna 6/1 Calum Chambers 6/1 Helder Costa 6/1

25/1 for us to get relegated looks a good bet if we don't get any central defenders.

Petedoors doesn't beat around the bush!!

But seriously we are heading into the season with Yoshida and Stephens as our CB partnership and they simply aren't good enough. We saw it throughout Feb onwards last season. We are now incredibly vulnerable to crosses and high balls into the box. Forster doesn't want to come and claim them, and Yoshida and Stephens aren't strong enough in the air to win them. It's not only in the air we are weak at the back, its the lapses in concentration, positional sense, instinct, the whole lot really.
In previous seasons we've been blessed with great defensive partnerships; Fonte + Lovren/Alderwiereld/Van Dyke. Brilliant defenders, with a solid midfield in front. With Lemina now I think our midfield could be better than ever, but there's only so much the midfield can do.
Without question we need to buy at least one top quality defender. Van Dyke is highly unlikely to do a U-turn (is he even able to? would we accept him? I don't think so!) so we need at least one new CB to partner Yoshida, who has without doubt improved but he and Stephens have too many weaknesses to form an effective partnership. If they don't make that signing then we're in for a very frustrating season where we might be scoring goals but it's all for nothing becasue the defence are constantly leaking avoidable goals.
