Got about 8 O Levels, tried 6th Form but hated it so took an apprenticeship in Heating & Ventilation, 5 years of day release at Herts College of Building in St. Albans (then Uni of Hertfordshire, now luxury flats!) got an HND.
That was in 1983 so I’ve been qualified for 40 years now!
Can’t get anything other than a degree now so I’m actually a Chartered Engineer and member of the Chartered Institute of Building Services Engineers. | | | |

2 GCSE, wasn’t allowed to 6 form, went to college to do a BTEC, got grades to go to uni and got a BA. (3rd). Always doing the bare minimum to get to the next level when I was young. In my 40’s now but revisited GCSE’s in later life to get my third (English) and signing up to maths which I’ve failed 3 times already. All very much for myself and to prove I can still learn at an older age :)

Left school aged 16 years and 1 month, 8 CSE’s best being grade 2 maths ( they were graded 1-5 no fails) grades 4 and 5 for everything else, I was the ultimate should have got O levels but literally fûcked about for the entire last two years and have regretted it ever since.
Used to take the piss out of all the swats, most of these now live very comfortably and a lot have retired whilst I deliver peoples shopping and still will be when I’m 70. |  |

O level English, CSE (remember them?) In maths, science, geography, history, and some made up religious stuff.
Did a plumbing course at Lime Grove college, but packed it in after a couple of years to go and earn some "proper" money working in a warehouse to the disappointment of my mother.

I've picked up the habit of trying new languages at night school and more recently online, just for the challenge of trying to remember things, always been fairly useless at speaking them. So far tried German, Japanese, Arabic (one term!), Greek and now Irish, but strangely still more fluent in the French I stopped studying nearly 45 years ago. [Post edited 4 Jun 2023 19:07]

IMO qualifications are overrated when judging how smart people are. Some of the dumbest people I’ve met are those with the highest “qualifications” you can get like PhDs, they are so impractical I wonder how they survive (I meet quite a few of them in my job). For me its about being interested in stuff, reading, watching videos, maybe doing the odd evening class and then trying out what you learn. Personally I have a uni degree but almost never use what I learnt there, the “school of life” taught me much more useful stuff. | | | |
