| When Grant Holt was signed to Notts Forest in January 2006, Dale boss Steve Parkin was quick to fill the gap and turned his attention to young Tranmere striker Chris Dagnall, and brought him to Spotland in a deal which could reach as much as £40,000 taking follow up clauses into consideration. His first season wasn't the easiest. It was difficult filling the gap left by Holt, and with the team struggling, it was difficult for any player to really show exactly what could be achieved.
However, despite the fact he may have only had three goals to his name during that first season, his contribution cannot be underestimated. For his goal deep, deep into injury time at an away game at Rushden probably saved our season. Had we lost that game, and been overtaken by Rushden in the table in the process, the worst would have been feared.
His second season was very much a mixed bag too. It was certainly a slow start for the Scouse striker with just one goal in his first ten games but he came back incredibly strong and finished the season with an excellent eighteen goals for the season.
He missed a chunk of the season when he broke his metatarsal bone in his foot, but he came back to form an excellent partnership with Glenn Murray scoring eight goals in those last ten games. That stat is made all the more impressive when you consider that he rarely played a full ninety minutes as he was "protected" during his return from injury by Dale boss Keith Hill.
All of the above would suggest that Dagnall is very much a confidence player, and when the team is doing well, his own personal form will be at its best. His finishing at the latter end of the season was exquisite - a fact demonstrated when he became the first Dale player to score a hat trick since Gareth Griffiths when he fired three goals against Macclesfield, and still didn't get the man of the match award.
