Saints In Discussion With Claude Puel About Compensation Package.
Monday, 5th Jun 2017 22:29

French Journalist Manu Lonjon has tweeted some very interesting news for Saints supporters about Claude Puel.

Tweeting earlier this evening Lonjon said

"Puel est en négociations pour être licencié... tu le vois dire " oui, Sainté, ca m'intéresse" ? . J'attends de voir. "

For those of you who do not speak French the rough translation is

"Puel is in negotiations to be fired... you see him say "Yes, Saints, it interests me"? I expect to see."

This comes just after it has been reported that Puel has turned down Saint-Etienne for a second time leaving Saints fans puzzled as to whether the club intend to see what develops before taking the step to sack him.

It seems that there is no way back for Puel now at St Mary's, the fact that the club have told the media they are still considering his position was hardly a vote of confidence in him and seemed merely stalling for time whilst Saints lined up their replacement.

Now it seems that perhaps that replacement has been found and tied up and that the end is near for Puel.

There are those that will point to 8th in the League and a Wembley final as testimony that the Frenchman did not do a bad job at the club, but they would not have seen the majority of the games since that defeat at Wembley.

This as the period that perhaps sealed his fate at the club and amongst the fans, the last months of the season saw little evidence of leadership, selection nous or tactics from the manager as Saints limped into 8th and the reality was they could have and should have pushed Everton a lot closer for 7th.

The next few days should be very interesting news wise from St Mary's

Good Riddence. We could have been in the top six if we had a good manager

If he is actually going, let's get it sorted quickly please.

We have lost out on too many deals in the past with our last minute decisions, or trying to get things on the cheap. Toby should have signed for us and we should have got other managers instead of 3rd choice Puel.

If he goes, move quickly to get Tuchel - who cares if it costs a bit to get rid of Puel and to employ Tuchel for an extra few months. It will show our intent and help attract players as well as convincing others to stay.

What sensible manager would want to come to S Marys with such a bunch of anti-social blood thirsty fans that have jumped on the success of Saints. Our pathetic fans think they have more knowledge of football than Everton fans and Puel or any future manager. It's alright to disagree but I wish it wasn't done with so much hatred.

aceofthebase - surely you are talking about the 1% of loudmouths with their social media megaphones. Every Saints fan I have spoken to who wants Puel to go has said so with sadness rather than hatred...

We should grab Big Sam whilst he is still available, boy are we going to need him after Christmas when all our pigeons come home to roost!

I think aceofbase makes an important point. Yes, the football wasn’t great to watch but we finished in a good position and reached a cup final. As Nick has highlighted, this is arguably one of Saints’ best ever seasons. By any objective measure, Puel has done a good job and done everything that was asked of him. If the club gets rid of Puel after this season, then what will they make of a new manager who has a poor start and leads to the club being threatened with relegation? Any new manager considering taking a job at Saints would definitely be keeping this in mind.

Saying all of that, I have come round to the idea that Puel should go. The Stoke game was the final nail in the coffin for me, just before Stoke scored we were singing songs for old players and starting to get a bit of a carnival atmosphere. After Stoke scored the atmosphere was terrible and the crowd finished the season with boos. I feel that if we’d won this game then everyone might have been more optimistic about Puel next season.

I like the idea of Tuchel, but there is something ironic in the idea that we would be firing our manager for delivering a good season but failing to meet expectations and replacing him with a manager who was fired after delivering a good season but failing to meet expectations. Football, eh?

As TimSaint says whatever is decided needs to be done quickly. With Liverpool sniffing around again like a pack of wolves we need strong leadership and some stability.

Ace, I have to agree with you. I think it's more than the social media trolls. Saints' fans have let themselves down badly seen Puel's appointment. I've been embarrassed with some of the stuff I've heard. Supporting a football club just isn't season on season glory. In fact for 90% of clubs in the league that's generally the case. When things aren't going so well, that's the time the true supporter digs in instead of turning on the manager and players. It's brainless.

I have to agree with SanMarco: Most people I know don't hate Puel. Frustrated yes, confused yes. Feel that we deserve entertainment and passion for the price of a ticket...yes.

Season ticket sales speak the loudest
