Man City squad is the most expensive in history
Friday, 23rd Mar 2018 15:00

Many people tend to assess coaches based on how much they are able to achieve with cheaper or less talented teams as the case may be. There are regular arguments on whether the coaches that handle teams with high profile and costly players can replicate the success they achieve with them when they handle teams with low profile players. The fact is that football is all about talents. Also, since the business angle took over the beautiful game, teams that want to succeed will always look for where the talents are located and add them to their squad.

In the past, teams like Chelsea, Real Madrid, Barcelona and PSG have been declared the costliest or most expensive in the past. This is because of the number of high profile talents they spent huge money to bring in. But a look at the current Man City squad worth simply reveals that they are the most expensive football club not only in England, but in the whole world. By extension, the Man City squad is also the most expensive squad the world has ever witnessed.

The Cause of the Improvement in Man City Squad

With the arrival of Pep Guardiola at the club, many people knew that majority of the players in the old Man City squad would hit the exit door. But people did not envisage that it would involve the most expensive players in the world coming into Man City in their numbers. At the moment, the Man City squad has a defense line that is so expensive that it is worth more than the entire squads of many teams in the English premier league. Man City defense is even more expensive than the entire squads of many teams in other leagues in the world. The interesting part of this is that we are just talking about the cost of the incoming Man City squad, because the team has not made any meaningful money in player sales.

Current Man City Squad Worth

So currently, Man City squad worth is put at a total of £ 777 million. The cost of Man City squad got to a record high after bringing in a lot of expensive players in the summer transfer. But Man City went ahead to add Aymeric Laporte in January, in a deal that cost them £57m. This makes him one of the most expensive defenders in the history of football. The team that comes behind Man City is PSG. Even when PSG signed the current world most expensive player in the person of Neymar at the cost of £198m, the worth of the Man City squad is still higher than theirs.

A look at the amount Man City spent to assemble their current squad suggests that Pep Guardiola has no reason to fail. This is because football is not like playing the mecca bingo online where you gamble with fortune. When you spend this amount of money to assemble a squad like that of Man City, that team must be lethal. That is why it became even embarrassing when Liverpool that has spent a much lesser amount dispatched Man City in the UEFA Champions League in two legged fixtures.

How the Man City Squad Worth Skyrocketed

A look at what brought the squad worth of Man City to the current amount will look like this. During the summer transfer window, after Pep Guardiola finished his first season in Man City abysmally, they brought in some expensive players to boost the squad. They include Kyle Walker from Tottenham at the cost of £45m, Ederson at the cost of £35m, and Bernardo Silva at the cost of £43m. Man City also bought Danilo at the cost of £27m and Benjamin Mendy at the cost of £52m.

Other clubs that come after Man City in the squad worth include Paris Saint Germain at the second position. Their city rival, Manchester United comes third, while Barcelona sits at the 4th position. Chelsea comes 5th, while Real Madrid follows at the 6th position. The surprise inclusion to the list is Everton which features in the top 20, coming after Liverpool and Arsenal. The question is, what can Pep Guardiola achieve with the current expensive to Man City squad, and when will it be ripe to judge the current Man City squad as a success or a failure.
