Ross Stewart First Game For Southampton Imminent
Monday, 30th Oct 2023 09:16

It's been two months since Ross Stewart joined Saints from Sunderland and little has been seen of him since, however Russell Martin has now given an update and has revealed that Stewart's debut could be only a week away.

Southampton travel to Millwall on Saturday and then host West Bromwich Albion at St Mary's a week later and Russell Martin has now told the media that the striker could feature in one of the next two features.

The Daily Echo has carried quotes from the Saints manager clarifying the situation.

Speaking to the paper he said:

“He’s really close. If it’s not next week, hopefully, it will be the West Brom game.”

That will be good news for Southampton supporters, although after the recent good results that have seen Saints stem the goals against at one end of the ground and averaging 2 goals a game at the front end, the debut of Stewart isn't as desperate as it was four weeks ago,

Against Birmingham City, Saints played a front three of Adam Armstrong, Kamaldeen Sulemana & Charly Alcatraz, all contributed in all of the three goals scored, Adam Armstrong leading the way with scoring the third goal and an assist for the opener, whilst Alcaraz scored the second with Sulemana providing the pin point cross.

The Saints manager also gave some good news on Che Adams who came off at half time at Preston North End and missed the win over Birmingham:

“I don’t think it’s going to be a long one, we’re hoping to have him back for next week but if not, it should be the week after.”

So it's good news to start the week for Russell Martin and his squad, now we have to keep the good run going by taking all three points at Millwall on Saturday..

Know nothing about him but his championship stats were good before his injury

" the debut of Stewart isn't as desperate as it was four weeks ago"

It doesn't need to be out of sheer desperation that we need to see Stewart playing. If indeed he is a natural goalscorer this will enable Armstrong and Alcaraz to play other roles, and maybe Sulemana will actually find a better end-product to his attacks down the flanks.
This is an ideal time to introduce Stewart, and Adams can always fill in when the new boy tires. For the first time in many months our strike force would actually look menacing and it is to be hoped that Russell Martin will provide Stewart with the service he could thrive on.

....not before time (I can hear some voices saying) but clearly his injury was serious enough to be out for a while and perhaps he didn't get the treatment he needed at Sunderland. I don't expect to see him playing 90 minute games too often to begin with, and it will be harder if those same fans expect a sudden goal rush from him to start with.

Millwall are not renowned for footballing skills, and so it might be a bit of a rough tussle.
Let's hope we can see him blend into a side that is already in form and find his place.

15 minutes at the end of the Millwall game when their defence has been busy with AA and co . And so knackered they wont be able to cope with the big man
