While I agree that many are discounting or underplaying the development potential of Armstrong, I have to disagree with this entirely. I watched Ferdinand in the reserves almost every home game (how I didn't get fired from that job I'll never know!) and his all-round game was miles and miles ahead of where Armstrong's is now. Superb in the air, far superior technique, better movement, a savage shot, a decent dribbler, and capable of tap-ins and poaching as well. It's certainly true that he developed all of those skills massively, but I think that many Rangers fans of today are perhaps guilty of revisionism when they now talk of Ferdinand's limited skillset upon arrival. It was already substantial. Within a week of him arriving Macca told a few of us that he was the new Cyrille Regis. Even if he was half-ribbing the listening Ferdinand, we knew he was also half-serious. Very soon, we knew that Ferdinand had the potential to be that and more, the worry was whether Rangers would have the patience. I see very little comparison as of now, but I'm not writing off Armstrong's development potential. I would be absolutely delighted if in the next year he became what the 21-yr old Ferdinand was. |

Another shout-out for James. One of the best bands I've ever seen live. Maybe not musically - though they were no daws - but atmosphere and playing the crowd. Unreal. |

Pretty sure that you can predict way in advance or as late as one minute before kick-off. I usually sleect for the entire round just to have something filled in and have a look again closer to the time. |

Ya, I've watched a lot of his Under-21 games, Bannerman. Good question, as they do play differently to us. He plays more as a back-to-goal centre-forward who traps, lays-off and spins. Himself and the wingers do change position a lot, though, so he does get one-on-ones, particularly coming in from the wings. In the games I've seen, the Irish underage teams create lots of chances and most fall to Armstrong. His conversion rate is low, with control, composure, decision-making holding him back. I would say that technically he is below average for the modern Irish youth player, but the crowd love that power and speed and he's a bit of a cult hero, and I don't mean that in a derogatory, patronising way either. |

We all love personality, Gloucs, but emotionally he's incredibly immature on the pitch. My concern is that this may be hindering him. I have no way of knowing, of course, it's just a concern. Immaturity usually leads to lapses in concentration (offsides?), burning of excess nervous energy (he can't last a game?) and/or an inability to recognise development opportunties as regards developing mental and technical skills (for a player his age who has played in two technical countries, his skills often let him down). Shearer used to talk about the 'ten-second reset'. He gave himself ten seconds to get over a miss. I suspect it's less than ten seconds now. In Gaelic Games it's five seconds, because that's how long it takes for the next kick-out/puck-out so you better be ready and in position or we lose possession and spend the next sixty seconds fighting to regain it. Armstrong often spends ages remonstrating with officials and/or himself while the game continues all around him. Even if he was hard done by, and he often isn't, his team-mates need him and need him now. He's 21. He's no babóg. |

I freely admit that I can't read the player's development - I have no idea if his career will go stratospheric or flame out. My main concern about him is not to do with his technical or tactical abilities but his inability to control his emotions on the field. He seems to find injustice and anger in far too many situations. I'd hope that he's more reflective, or learns to be more reflective off the field. Otherwise, it can be a real barrier to learning and growth. edit gr. check. [Post edited 13 Jun 8:55]

Poor Wayne. That 'tache really took off for him, did it. Maybe it's because he ran so fast. |

Exactly. Other things it stops: 1) Pouring Guinness for two or three waiting customers at the one time - saves time in the long run. 2) One trip to the fridge for bottled beers 3) One trip to the till to take for two or three rounds at once 4) Most importantly, it stops customers going back to the barman/barmaid who served them last time and nodding 'same again' Queueing? Fúck's sake... |

Agree about Colback's likeable aggression, the 'taking one for the team' fouls and also the petulant yellows. The latter drive me crazy. Interesting about Field. I knew his yellows had reduced, but that's crazy. I suppose part of it was that he was playing further up the park, but still - that reduction is impressive. |
