General Election

Country needs a reboot.

Farage/reform are old news and have basically one policy - stop immigration.

The conservative have splashed a 90 seat majority up the wall, and in the process have pretty much destroyed themselves with infighting and a general lack of seriousness in their choice of leaders and ministers, and have taken the rest of us down with them. They're clowns,

The FA lack ambition in their choice of managers.

I'm bored of Southgate and will be pleasantly surprised if we win these Euros.

I'm bored of Howe already.

VAR

Don't know what the objection is to an independent timekeeper.

Lot's of drama in rugby and basketball where the fans can see exactly how long to do go.

It would also help my tinnitus to be rid of all that whistling at the end.

VAR
at 10:50 10 Jun 2024

Hey Jelly

Something we agree on.

Whatever benefits VAR is meant to bring (and in my opinion they are few), the enjoyment and spectacle of every single game that VAR is involved is ruined.

It's just not worth it.

It's a failed system. In any other industry it would have been 'grounded' years ago until the problems were fixed.

But football doesn't work like that. Too many contracts and vested interests, for the authorities to give a sh!t that it ruins games.

But, yes, well done Wolves for having a go.

I detect the influence of Nathan Jones in some of Sunak's decision making.

Teresa May let a 20 pint lead disappear during her election campaign, so he’s got competition, but so far Rishi Sunaks election campaign has been a multi-car pile up.

It’s so bad, it feels like internal sabotage but even so any fool should know that leaving the D-Day celebs early would be wrong.

Sunak has always been a drip.

Exactly this about his capacity to let in shots that he should be saving.

We'll never know, but I really don't think it's a given that we would have triumphed in the playoffs had he been in goal for those last few games.

Would you really be pleased to see him keeping for us back in the Premier League?

I am not sure he has improved much this season. The problem was always that he makes very few surprising/outstanding saves (some, of course) and there are plenty of saves that he would be expected to make that go in.

His distribution is, though, excellent.

Maybe he will improve. Send him on loan to a Championship side and let them find out first.

EFL Cup to become even more of a joke!
at 11:20 31 May 2024

It would make sense and give the others more of a chance of silverware, if anyone qualifying for a European competition is excluded from the League Cup.

Teams in lower divisions have their own trophies that teams higher up are excluded from, so there's nothing wrong with this as a concept.

And the FA Cup would still be there as the cup comp that everyone is involved in.

Whatever else it is, the Premier League is no fun unless you are somewhere near the top.

It would help a little bit if they binned VAR before next season but I'm not holding my breath.

I agree. RM was bigging up Bazuna because he was stuck with him.

But he will know that Bazzuna didn't cut it in the Prem last time and, for me, he hasn't shown enough improvement to have another go (just yet).

It's going to be hard enough back in the Prem without a flakey goalkeeper gifting the opposition easy goals.

And that goes for McCarthy too. He can leave on a high now. His recent performances should be enough to get him a No.1 slot in another Championship side.

But we will need a keeper with good feet if RM wants to continue to play the same way.

So How Was Everyone's Day On Sunday
at 10:36 28 May 2024

Waiting in the queue for tickets at Denham station, a Leeds fan opened the door to his (arriving) van to shout 'get back to the concentration camp, you Southampton c*nt' at my youngest son.

Apart for that we had a fantastic day!

Completely bonkers that this game has VAR.

A whole championship season without it and then it’s thrown in at the end.

The mindset that it should be used wherever possible is so f*cked up. As if those in charge still don’t get what an utter disgrace it is.

And what a game to suck the enjoyment out of.

My first two have arrived and I managed to get another one (for me) in the extras yesterday.

Those are collection only and not available until noon tomorrow, which is annoying as I am passing through Southampton today.

General Election called for Thurs 4th July
at 10:26 23 May 2024

Labour's campaign is going to be two words - 'Liz Truss' - and as Sunak's rating is now less than hers, the Tories are going to struggle to rebut that.

I was listening to Sunak's speech in the car and thought it was one of the most boring and uninspiring election speech I had ever heard...It was only later that I saw he was presenting it while getting soaked and with 'Things can only get better' blaring out. There must be someone in his comms department trying to sabotage him. What a great start.

Seriously though is anyone who isn't a die-hard Tory going to vote for a party whose MPs or membership could very easily ditch their leader immediately after the election and instal another complete nut-job instead?

I was disappointed that the tickets went on sale on Sat morning. Couldn’t see how they could have excluded the pitch invaders from Wembley tickets by then.

PL clubs to vote on VAR

The 'level is onside' rules came in in 1990.

I cannot remember anyone arguing that it was impossible to tell whether two players were 'level' before VAR.

Neither can I remember any real controversies about whether or not a particular player was 'level'. The controversies were about linesmen missing players who were a good distance offside.

So the 'level is offside' works as a rule UNLESS YOU DRAW LINES ON A SCREEN AND START MEASURING TOES - neither of which has f*ck all to do with football.

The 1990 change worked and gave the benefit of the doubt to the attacker. It works in every non-VAR game worldwide. The problem is not the 'level is onside' rule.

I agree that under the VAR system it is almost impossible to be level. This is precisely the problem. VAR has EFFECTIVELY changed the rules.

The fault is with the people who designed the system (the second I saw this line drawing nonsense, I knew that it would be disastrous) and with those who were faced, very early on, with a barrage of stupid offsides on the basis of toes etc, and who did not step in to change the way VAR was operating immediately.

You're right that we tend to follow the rules more than some (although in my experience the Dutch are even more sticklers than we are).

But I think there's a slightly different thing that's happened here to do with policing and power.

Basically, if you give people power to do anything they are going to use it. They can't help themselves. So it's impossible for a VAR official to say 'that's nothing to do with me'/'that's not the sort of glaring error I was designed for'. And because there is no referral system to the VAR officials, they just introduce themselves into the mix whenever they fancy, which has been all the f*cking time.

Likewise, give them a system that can measure toenails and they are going to use it to measure toenails, even if nobody in planet football ever imagined in a million years that this nonsense is what they would be doing.

These things were obvious from day one. The whole system was designed by complete morons.

And the footballing authorities have been utter cowards for allowing the VAR abuse of football to continue for as long as it has.
