Been a harsh critic (deservedly so in my opinion) but credit where it’s due - good game today

Put himself about and won a few tackles but also some really intelligent passes and took up good positions when out of possession

Fair play

Close to MoM but that’s Saito for me

Cherish and enjoy life.... this ain't no dress rehearsal

Hopefully very little, Mick.

Judging by comments on this site and on SM Madsen seems favourite, at this stage, for Player of the season.

He cut a forlorn figure when he came off , and JS asked him something to which he gave a sad little shake of the head. I didn't realise he had a knock though to be honest.

He seemed to do it diffing a corner kick in front of us. Pulled up and then hung around at left back the rest of the game. Lucas Andersen all over again.

I thought he looked absolutely shattered after he lost the ball then chased the geezer all the way back to win it back. Not the same after that at all.

If he is injured for a month or so then that is the season finished for this team. 16th here we come.
Scandalous that we have no other midfielders capable of passing a ball 10 yards to a teammate.

We were probably going to finish about there anyway.

The narrative that Madsen is some God-like figure is hilarious to me.

He was absolute fcking dog sht last year, and he's improved from that abysmal base level.

Best game was against Leicester, because Cifuentes was back, got his little Instagram post in afterwards, and then next two games has gone back to how he was last year.

Ya, he's done well in lots of games, without a doubt, particularly now that his set-pieces and crossing is improved, but I just don't trust him at all. Too many games of late, and periods of games of late he's reverting to last season's form and questionable work-rate.

We're losing midfield more and more often, and while a lot of that is admittedly down to tactics I don't see him busting a gut to pump water either.

He had his best game for the club against Leicester and the thought occurred that if he put that effort in last year, he wouldn't have to be doing socials about drinking Estrella now just because he helped us beat Cifuentes.

In the following game he was insipid again.

Well, if you have one midfielder who can pass and three that can't then that makes him by far the best we've got. Only have to look at the Oxford game at home when he didn't play to see what will happen to this team.

In the land of the blind etc.

100% agree with you, Wilkins and have since you started calling this many moons ago.
The central midfield issue has not been addressed.

Agree with you .

But we have to hang our hat on something .

Just to have a player , any player, who for the most part retains possession, wants the ball, and moves the ball on quickly to keep us going forward rather than finding 101 ways to go back to our goal keeper or just lump it into touch every time they get it, is going to be praised and to an extent lauded by a fan base starved of midfield players doing the very basics that position requires.
Because his team mates are absolutely awful at all of the above .

Natural that we might go a tad overboard.

He didn't want the ball last night. Or on Boxing Day.

Madsen, Dunne, Chair, Field, Burrell. Any single one of those five missing and our game suffers. More than one and we're gonna be in trouble.

This is the kind of stuff that it's much harder to tell from a stream than it is in the ground, but I did definitely notice occasions in the first half against West Brom where there was a clear opportunity for him to widen out an angle to receive a pass out of defence, that he declined to do. Which was very worrying. Then a few minutes later we won a corner and he was fist pumping and geeing up players around him. He's an odd fellow. Fair to say he's not reliable enough at this point, but also correct to say that we don't have an alternative in his role - unless we experiment with Chair in CM again? Which could be an option, and worth trying so that we at least have some competition there?

MONEY!!!

I'd say that was obvious.....

Point of order on some recent musings from some.
It's the second time in a few days I've seen / heard Nico referred to as an "EFL Trevor Brooking"..... come on, we've all had a drink.
He's having an alright season and has done really well on occasions but he's got a long way to go still.

On we go.......

I had heard Chair was to be available again for the new year games.

If Madsen went off with a knock the other day, personally i would put Chair into centre midfield instead of Madsen and for me, i might actually give Field / Hayden the other centre mid berth. I think Varane needs time and coming off the bench for a few games might help him get back his form also.

Always wondered if Chair could be that man as he does often drop back to gain possession in games and has already shown that to be the case.

So would i Brian and I think a cheeky loan bid for Declan Rice is worthy of a try.

To be fair, for where we are currently, Madsen, Varane, Field and Hayden is reasonable recruitment for what we can afford.

If you asking for better recruitment, who exactly would you choose, given that you are saying our recruitment of centre midfielders is poor.

I actually like Hayden and Field, Numpty, they're good at what they do.

Varane is a mystery to me, as he seems capable of every facet of the game, but he's not perfroming anywhere near well enough.

I just agree with Wilkins that none of those three pass the ball forward well enough, and we are supposed to be playing 433, possession-based football which requires forward passing.

Which leaves Madsen, who has enough talent but whose work-rate and desire has often been questionable, and who I don't trust.

So, ya, I'd like us to recruit better central midfielders. Whether it's possible or not, I'll gladly leave to those who watch more teams than I do, but with hundreds of thousands of footballers in the world and with us in England's second division, having spent huge amounts of money of late it's a disappointing outcome.

My favourite post of the festive period so far ! Sometimes favourite things are available.

Thank you Brian and happy new year in advance to everyone.

Those possessed by devils, try and keep them under control a bit, can't you ?
