You want Ronnie Edwards you have to free up money somewhere else.

Just been checking Norwich results from February when Field joined them. 5 games 4 wins 1 defeat 4 clean sheets and 2 goals conceded. Seems their defence has improved. Wonder what our manager did not see in Field.

Should have sent Morgan on loan instead

I don't think Morgan is earning the same as Field, or would have demanded a loan fee of any description.

The Field loan was 100% about balancing the budget for this season in lieu of a big sale

he wasnt as salable as varanne and thats not down to the manager .
varanne on the second half of last season from could make us prob 5/8 million this season from id say under 4 million with rumoured 50% clause to his old club.

why do u think madson was flogged to an inch of his life before as expected his hamstring went ?

The hubris of shipping Field out when we did was always going to bite us in the buttocks. You could see it a mile off.

But what choice did club have? You can’t make the coach pick him. I do agree we could all see this coming. The Field and Varane/Hayden partnership is always a solid option.

I can only think it was financial and we know Field wanted to play more.

I was surprised we didn't start Smyth as left wingback against Utd. Esquerdinha needs a season on loan. Field would obviously been the best choice if he wasn't sitting on the bench at Norwich.

You do get the feeling that a side with the experience of Cook, Dunne, Hayden and Field will see you through more even games with more points. Releasing such an experienced player seemed very odd, even if he was a bit miffed at not playing as much as he should.

Never knowingly right.

Madsen played every game because he’s been our best player and with Chair repeatedly injured we have nobody else creative to replace him.

Said this on a couple of other threads, but for me you drop back Harvey Vale into midfield. Progressive passer, doesn't shirk a challenge, deceptively tall. Smyth plays RW.

Yeah that seemed to be the obvious move given the paucity of creative options available.

Even with Vale in that midfield we still lose that game. It was only Utd staying in second gear that saved the scoreline and kept the manager in the job.

Absolutely gutless performance, if I'm the manager I'm going mental on Monday, I'd make those c*nts watch every minute of the 90 in the video room and I'd pause the video everytime Varane passes backwards to show that even if he was able to kick the b'stard ball forwards there was sweet fanny adams in front of him with any movement.

The one time a ball did go forward correctly Smyth showed his full ability by going past the keeper and neither shooting or crossing accurately.

I don't want to single anyone out, but what was the point of Smyth fouling their keeper for the corner we scored from?

Braindead.

If you can't match the oppo for skill you can at least run harder than them, what is going on with our millions of performance backroom staff?

They are the ones who should be culpable for the last two years of availability, terrible stuff

Sorry if I'm being stoopid but why did we give Field a four year contract renewal, if he wasn't going to be starting most games?

We didn't want him to play much, but we didn't want to lose him on a free either?

Yours, confused.

ME SO CLEVAH.

Genius plan - so Sammy gets fed up playing no football, we loan him to Norwich where of course he does well, we then sell him for [REDACTED] in the summer.

Meanwhile our team and season collapse in a heap.

I think its like Frey.
A fee will be leaked, but in reality its just that the next club take over the remaining contract and any outstanding bonuses etc...

Didn't Field get a couple of new contracts in a short space of time?
It is a bit of a mystery, maybe one was triggered after appearances, but remember back then we all thought that Madsen was never going to turn his corner in the way he did, so Sam was a much more key member of the squad.

In the brave new world of CN I think he likes the first team squad to be committed to a longer contract, or get sold. The idea being to avoid the Manning type situations where they run the contract down and leave on a free

Not this again.

Clubs don't 'take over' contracts. When a player is transferred the existing contract is cancelled and a new one signed between the player and the new club.

We didn’t ALL write Madsen off: some supporters give new signings a chance and time if they don’t hit the ground running.

Hands up id written him off totally and am amazed how well hes played at time this season , is he gonna fill the bank account NO , will he help chip away at our loses prob yes , hes not gonna be bringing in 20/30 million but should be s olid 7/8 million way more than varanne will be thats for sure . does that fit the future plans for the club prob not but helposmkeep us below that FFP line for a nother season hopefully .

Isn't that what I've said though?

Lets say that Sam will have 12 months of contract left to run at the end of this season, and just for ease he is on £10k a week.

Thats £520k of salary that would be leaving QPR next season.
Sam might have also got some other bonus spread over the contract that could be added on, as well as the normal stuff, like appearances, goals, final position etc..
So, maybe that deal could be worth £600k?

If Norwich really like Sam over the loan, I'd imagine they could give QPR £600k to terminate his contract and then the player can leave on a "free"

The "fee" leaked to the press would be £600k, but in reality all the buying club are doing is settling the contract on QPR's behalf.

Obviously its not the same contract, so the buying club aren't taking it over, but the player isn't getting a paycut, most likely they will get a bit more, as well their agent, who will also get paid.

then you would be giving away a player who actually has value , what u describe would be used when u have players on the books that ur desperate to get rid of to make us look like we got a decent deal

I read Nick's comment slightly differently from you.

I think what Nick is saying is that the club makes a saving by getting a player's wages off the books.

In the case of Frey leaving I think WLS reported that the move was worth £x to the club.

It's basically clever/sneaky wording (I assume by the club and not WLS!)

The report doesn't explicitly say that we got a fee for Frey. Nor does it say we didn't get a fee, but it does create the impression we got a good fee and some people would certainly read it that way.

Frankly it's quite poor from the club. If you are going to maintain a policy of not revealing fees and contracts for new signings then you shouldn't be leaking out this vaguely worded nonsense when a player leaves just because it looks like a 'win' for the CEO.

OK, OK., I can't and shouldn't speak for everyone.

But, you would have to agree that a lot of supporters had written off Madsen as never going to be able to cut it in the Championship.

I also support the team and players and want them to succeed everytime they are on the pitch.

However, as that last Jan showed, we might rate our players higher than the other 71 football clubs, as if there was much interest in our players we would have been interested in listening.

You would like to think that if more the squad were available this season we could have sent, Bennie, Esquardinho and Kolli out on loan to get some experience without the same pressure on them, but I'm not sure that those guys walk into a L1 team...

I liked Duke-McKenna, and thought there was a player there, but even he was loaned out from a L2 club, so, the market has shown I was wrong there, so what do I know!?

I think that was the elephant in the room from the Jan window though.
Bringing in Ronnie and the injured player from Coventry meant that the club were desperate to remove some immediate cost from this years budget.

And, maybe the only player we had who generated any interest from anyone else, who we could let go without hurting the first team squad too much was Sam Field?

I mean, I'm guessing, but thats how it makes sense to me.
If there was no financial constraint of course you keep Field around, wasn't he a player of the year not too long ago?
