Why is that lino covering his mouth while talking on the way out? What has he got to hide we should be told. Nice to turn on the Football League highlights this morning and straightaway hear "Only Swansea City have conceded fewer goals than [Southampton]" phnaar phnaar |

I think it was undoubtedly a smart move by Julien to put him into the two. It gave Kone so much more support, coming back to fitness, took the pressure off compared to if he'd been on his own or with a 10 behind. And playing Smyth in that role reminded me of a goal he scored years ago for us when he was just coming through - straight through the middle with pace. Was somewhat reminiscent of Michael Owen's goal against Argentina. The high point before a long period of low points for us, so to see that today was great. |

Ignored by O'Neill for 4 games. The evidence is that Julien knew how to help him through that - has been on raw meat these last few games. Very proud. |

Yeah that today was a proper team. Quality right through the spine, Kone resurrected, composure, movement, energy from everyone. Nasty, nasty stuff. |

At some point I'll have to look through the last 7 or 8 pages - a lot of nuance to the idea that we are fcuking swimming in injuries. One thing I picked up is that my extreme frustration with the lack of changes last week was not entirely justified. It turns out that yes, you really can be on our bench and not be able to move properly. What a world. |

Charlie1 - a true gentleman and much missed on here. Please give him my best WB, under the circumstances. This stuff with Ted is just awful - hard to know what to say anymore, but if anyone can handle it it's absolutely him. |

What you've gone through recently is my worst nightmare Mart. And to see the progress - I wouldn't have the words for how touched and impressed I am with you both. |

My possibly unreasonable addition to the reasoned debate is, for all the mitigating factors quite reasonably mentioned above, JS needed to change more than he did yesterday. I know we don't know all the ins and outs of how people have been training, all the loadings and whatnot but Kolli clearly needed help, Smythy needed a break (was shaking his head at himself in frustration) etc. Give Scarlett half an hour and let BOS deal with something new, get Madsen on to try to thread a few balls through, rejig it to get Kolli and Kone working together. Something. I don't get the big bucks but it reminded me of the Pompey away game last season when we needed an extra body in midfield all game and never did. |

If they can't do half an hour they shouldn't be on the bench, so assuming Madsen could've done half an hour he absolutely should have been on. Kone getting back to fitness (at some point) and Varane coming on was never going to change that game to the extent it needed.10 minutes for the other two at the end. I'm all for JS having faith in his players but that was far too passive, and his team had the same look about them. He's been great for us this season but that was fcuking irritating. |

Are all these subs just names on a sheet Me Julie? I bloody love Paul Smyth but BOS has got his number and he can't trap a bag of sand today. CHANGE SOMETHING |

Good analysis. While we're all in full on drooling mode (and why not - enjoy it while it lasts), movement like that combined with player quality through the spine of the team and in other areas seemed to be the key on Wednesday. I know Derby were rank but we've had so many years of watching other teams win where one of the reasons would an obvious difference in quality in 1 to 1 match ups. This season so far that squad, even allowing for a certain amount of injuries (though there are limits) matches up better against other teams and is more able to implement some of these ideas really well than has been the case for a while. |

This rings very viscerally to me so I'll just add two things: Gentrification is rampant and spurred on by developers in so many major cities. When I left Brooklyn the building was already being targeted. They stopped leaving the envelopes under the door to put the cheques in (ridiculously old fashioned I know) so I phoned them up and asked what was going on. The person on the end of the phone told me the building had been sold and they could either send me this month's rent slip or they could make me an offer for a buy out. We had already booked our flights to come back, so I asked her how much she would give me to buy my way out of the lease. She asked what would you be looking for so I said '$10k minimum'. I thought that was a solid effort, but the fact that she didn't bat an audible eyelid caused me concern once I'd hung up the phone. I I went back a couple of days later and made adjustments based on tax etc but I probably could have got more. I'm at peace with it would've been spent long ago. The point is though, assuming that poor woman had similar rental rights to me at that time, that we in the UK have never had, it is so easy to see how she was squeezed, and for how long. Other people in my building had started to feel that. Same developer by the way as featured at the very end of The Jinx Part 2 for anyone who's seen it. The other issue is the massive preponderance of Airbnbs all over Spain. I'm a bit less wordy on that one. [Post edited 8 Oct 21:15]

I've never watched it and don't get it, and have decided not to get it. I know I may be losing out but I can't be bothered with yet more celebrity wittering. I'd much prefer continuing to watch random episodes of Jade Fever - real men (and a woman) out there in the elements, mining or mostly not mining, jade. Driving around in old trucks and cutting open rocks with a big saw. Failing safety inspections and arguing over mud. Now that's entertainment. |

It's either going to be 'there is NO link between injuries and who plays. The latter is based entirely on attitude' and Rayan has shown the right attitude recently. Or 'There is NO link between injuries and who plays. The latter is based entirely on attitude' and I'm going to need to see it more, or more consistently before Rayan is selected. I'm leaning toward him separating the injuries and the standards out as a point he wants to make clear, to explain why he's selecting Kolli, but we'll see. Good stuff anyway Clive and Connor - thanks. I'm going to have to listen back to the first half of that answer on why Ronnie is so good - sounded slightly marijuana assisted to me, but in a good way.
