No Room For Error In Southampton Promotion Push
at 09:25:08

We need to hope our manager gets his tactics right for a start. HB and JB need to be undisturbed as our centre back pairing. Sulemana needs more than a token 10 minutes and our strikers need to make sure they have their scoring boots on. Hopefully Bree and KWP will complete the back four and if fit Flynn Downes is nailed on for a place with Stu alongside him.

Sit Back, Wait, Watch And Hope Is All Southampton Can Do This Weekend

Sure if it was Leicester or one of the other authorities’ favourites something would have been sorted out but of course they will not get their finger out for us. Hope results go our way and I will watch the lasses on Sunday, although they too have a lot to do to secure promotion.

Southampton V Sunderland The Verdict
at 10:11:57

Thought Baznau went long more often this game actually. Agree though that Martin needs to wake up and realise that THB and Jan B are by far the best central partnership and should never voluntarily be split, in that connection good that there were no bookings. Good to see Sulemana get more time, again one of our most incisive players. Need to get the ball to him quicker though if we are to maximise his effectiveness.

It is good that we have scorers all over the place but I hope AA finds his shooting boots soon, although admittedly he is playing out of positions because Che Adams is so good at holding up the ball.

Overall good results for us then though a shame Leeds won on Friday. It is clear that the three games against Ipswich, Leicester and Leeds will make or break our automatic promotion prospects.

Southampton At Birmingham City The Verdict
at 11:50:49

Exciting, but potentially heart stopping and should’ve been much easier. Is Manning, the worst fullback we have ever had. Miles away from his man for the first goal, and stood right behind Jan Bednarek, instead of covering his man for the second. Thought Jack Stephens was actually quite good going forward. Would much prefer however, if he dropped Manning and played Stephens there leaving the excellent Harwood Bellis and Jan Bednarek as our centre pairing

Joe Aribo and Flynn Downes excellent. Good to see Adam Armstrong, getting on the scoresheet again. Sulemana on far too late again when will Martin learn?. Not too much room for slip ups on the run in now so I hope Martin gets his tactics sorted out quickly.

Southampton At Liverpool The FA Cup Verdict
at 11:14:21

Yet again the folly of ignoring Sulemana highlighted as once again he proved incisive. Incredible Martin does not have the kahunnas to give him an extended run in the team. Thought Shea Charles looked particularly slow and ineffective, even before his miss. We really should have been leading before then, who said Mara was a great finisher …. As it was we were very unlucky to go a goal down to a wicked deflection that would probably otherwise have been saved.

Glad we are now able to focus on the league although unless the manager bucks his ideas up I fear we will be disappointed leading to departures of the likes of HB, KS and CE.

Hope Sulemana starts against Birmingham, however playing him against Liverpool may be Martin’s excuse for not doing so.Even if he does play tonight I hope he at least plays for the whole of the second half on Saturday to bring some much needed penetration.

What exactly is the situation with Flynn Downes and for that matter Ryan Fraser, haven’t heard much recently.

Southampton V Millwall The Verdict
at 12:05:08

When will he give Sulemana a proper chance. Saturday was a perfect time to put him on when Ryan Fraser was injured but instead he put on Sam Edozie, who will be a great player in time but is too lightweight for a very over physical Milwall side. When he did eventually cam on for his usual too late 20 minute cameo he was our most incisive player (including the cross for Armstrong's header) but Martin refuses to learn from his mistakes. Incidentally I seem to remember Bertrand being given a straight red against Leicester for a less dangerous challenge than the one on Fraser. Symptomatic of a truly appalling referee as it turned out letting Milwall get away with murder, awarding them a soft penalty and refusing us perfectly warranted free kicks / penalty.

Really hope Ryan Fraser's injury is not too serious although the omens are not good and that Flynn Downes is back soon as promotion is slipping away fast. Even assuming we make the play offs if we continue to misfire as we are doing presently we will not win through those.

Come on Martin get a grip and come on owners keep tabs on Potter as if this goes on, despite the winning run, Martin will have demonstrated he is just not up to it.

Martin is hopeless, Sulemana our second most creative player after Stuart Armstrong cannot get decent time on the pitch. No chance of premiership football next season if he continues in this vein.

Southampton V Hull City The Verdict
at 21:03:25

Utter rubbish manager comments after the game. He was the one who made poor selections and refused to adapt his tactics. It was apparent very early on that Hull were pressing very effectively. I disagree with you Nick about Sulemana, the game was crying out to have him playing through the centre and running onto balls over the top. Instead we dilly dallied and continually looked like we might concede again. Obviously Russell Martin did not watch the Liverpool game at the end of last season. Instead arguably our best flair player, since we let Alcaraz go, was brought on too late and out on the wing.

I do agree that Fraser and Che Adams should have been on from the start. Aribo too should be starting as he brings the aggression we need to midfield. Hear what you say about AA but at the moment he looks to be somewhat out of touch. Really hope he clicks into place soon as his work rate is always exceptional.

Doubtless having cocked it up by fielding a weaker team against the tougher opposition yesterday we will find all the players who should have started on at the beginning on Saturday. Yes, we had a good 25 match run but I am really wondering again now whether Russell Martin is the right man to have us win automatic promotion. As Joe Egg said it must be doubtful that we could beat in even the play offs unless something changes.

Southampton At Bristol City The Verdict

Thought Manning was absolutely hopeless. Beaten far too easily for their first when he failed to follow his man as they casually played around him and didn't put in any effort to get back for their third allowing their player ages to pick a good pass.

American Saint, unusually I disagree with you. Think Sulemana was trying to hard to impress having been brought on too late, should have played the second half but he still has the potential to be a game changer and we badly need that when Stu is not there or not firing on all cylinders.

Badly missed Downes and Che and I would have preferred to see Mara starting given how out of form AA seems to be, hopefully just temporarily.. Have to say the decision to loan out Alcaraz seems to be a major mistake as he is another who can turn the game on its head.

All that said if Brooks had been able to stretch just an inch further it could have been very different result last night. As it is now they all need to focus on a very important WBA game as lose this and I fear a lot of our momentum will evaporate.

FA refusal to allow broadcasting of the game is a disgrace but no surprise, an organisation run for the benefit of the 'big' teams rather than the supporters and all teams. Really bad for those of us overseas. Saints decision to charge a fee to listen to the commentary, even to those with an overseas video pass is also poor, apparently it is free to Watford subscribers.

Yes, I think Thierry Small has gone. I am still not convinced that losing Alcaraz for the promotion run in is great but we will see given he can unlock defences. I’m afraid I am with Nick that more often than not Jack Stephen’s is an accident waiting to happen, I can only guess what RM sees in him. Really looking forward to seeing Sulemana band Edozie back, will be interesting to see how they can all have game time. Hopefully their inclusion will mean less disruptive substitutions than in recent games.

Why would he go when they are likely to pass us going up. Have more concern is the rumour that Alcaraz might be tempted to Forest. Both players would be good to hold onto if we secure promotion.
