Steve Moran for starters, I seem to remember he was scouted locally and McMenemy telling a story about giving him a new pair of boots as an ice breaker to introduce him to the idea of signing for Saints as a youngster. |

I think it was more by luck than judgement last season, I saw a couple of lengthy videos on YouTube shot by a Newcastle fan covering both the home and away games and it was barely organised chaos at times with the police struggling to but just about keeping the rival fans apart. Remember thinking at the time that will probably ‘bubble up’ next season.
Also, a Newcastle fan I know well said that the general consensus at the start of last season was it was probably only going to be a one-off as Sunderland would be odds on to go straight back down but as that has not happened they are now taking a more cautious approach this season. |

The number certainly seemed familiar, my first thought was the Steve Wright In The Afternoon show’s spoof 0898 ad’s that were a running joke on the show but that was 0898 121 121, for example, two Rotarians and an egg whisk on 0898 121 121. There were loads of them, all equally bizarre and often quite funny.
Those Club Call & Team Talk lines were an absolute rip off, in fact, they were a double rip off because not only did they fleece the supporters but the clubs only got 25%-35% of the total revenue generated. Overall the biggest winners were the media companies operating the lines and then BT who took 25%-30% of the total revenue generated for themselves. Top flight clubs typically earned 10p-13p per minute depending on who they were, so, Saints = 10p/min, Liverpool = 13p/min

Except on Sky? Absolutely right, the new narrative does not fit in with Sky’s relentless’Disneyfication’ of the Premier League. Of course, City are one of their pet clubs they love to gush over uncontrollably. Poor Sky, hopefully this will become a piece of history that they cannot rewrite. |

Seconded re Ludwig, a third series has been commissioned and starts filming this month.
New ITV drama The Blame is supposed to be good, starts 20th September.
Also looking forward to the second series of Nick's pick, This City is Ours on the Beeb, 8 Eps, coming this autumn. |

Your observations are spot on. Everyone knew as you rightly say. I’d go as far as to say England were hated by FIFA and UEFA at the time, it was only 12 months after Heysel so English teams were 1 year into a 5 year ban from European football at club level. The stigma surrounding English football fans affected the England team too IMO so what Maradona got away with was no surprise as a result. I reckon if that handball had been against Brazil or one of the other top European teams the goal would not have stood. |
