League 1 clubs interested in Rodney
at 13:51 3 Apr 2024

No shade on Rodders as he's done a stand-up job with the opportunities he's had after his illness, but bloody hell the word "ace" is doing a lot of heavy lifting in that headline...

Good luck to him if it works out but agreed with above, L1 is a hell of a step up from the standard we are at now.

If you look at the positions on the right, this looks very much to me like an export from a certain well-known computer game. R Chaff will be along to confirm I'm sure!

Problem is there are enough arty farty words in the rules now about recklessness and the like that provide enough leeway to cover refs' behinds. So I'm in the ridiculous position that I thought it was a great tackle, but absolutely would not waste 500 quid appealing it. Money down the drain. If we were a bit closer to the playoffs then might be worth a gamble, but I'd be minded to let this one go with the season petering out.

Great find - you could switch the names of the clubs around in that thread and a lot of it would be indistinguishable from what we've seen on here.

Have they got an dutch tazzy though

SD's name is in plenty of (mostly Dutch) articles about WSH and it seems was disclosed during the ADO Den Haag takeover process prior to WSH falling out of that process and switching to MVV. Bayhawks are basketball rather than baseball but the point stands! The NBA has various feeder leagues, and I think actually purchased the G-league a few years back which led to a lot of those teams being hoovered up as subsidiaries of the major teams - likely involved in SD coming out of the ownership.

And yes absolutely agreed on the last part, but that would presumably be where Bob Heere's expertise would come in, his academic work seems to have mostly focused on sports and community links, and his name also heavily mentioned in all the Dutch takeover articles (believe he is a US/Dutch national), so the link between the three seems to have been there for a few years at least, rather than being cobbled together for the sake of a look at Dale - as looked like was the case with the last round of jokers.

One thing worth raising (which I think Kieran Maguire has mentioned a few times in discussion on other clubs) is that due diligence on US investors is always going to be very limited due to the lack of statutory disclosure levels that exist in the UK and Europe. Unless you engage with a PI firm such as Kroll or the like (which would cost well into the five figures), there is going to be very little publicly-available information to go off for the average Joe (or Simon). The key information therefore becomes:

(1) Letter of Intent - whilst not legally binding, this is an accepted first step in a transaction, and puts forward at least some reputational risk if nothing else. With regard to the supposed other investors interested and mentioned over the last few weeks, would be interesting to know if any others have reached LOI, or are just sniffing around / kicking the tires.

(2) Proof of funds - doesn't assure our future and in theory can be manipulated, but at the very least shows capital or someone somewhere willing to provide it. Key question is regardless of them putting the cash in as equity on the Dale side, whether it has been provided to WSH themselves as debt or equity. Given Steve Demetriou's reported involvement in WSH, it could be either - his former consulting firm is the size at which a CEO/Chairman/Board Member would have had to have made some pretty bad decisions not to have a substantial rainy day fund tucked away.

(3) Reputation from online sources - plenty on here have done their best in this regard. Whilst there have been questions asked about the minority stake in MVV and why a 90% stake is required here, I'm at least heartened (assuming Demetriou is the money man here, and I must emphasise that's a supposition) by two facts:
- their MVV involvement seems genuine and, Scott Dyer at least gives the public impression of being involved in the running. Another poster on here also mentioned their attendances have increased, although would be good to understand if there are other reasons why.
- Demetriou seems to be an avid sports fan. He bought the Erie Bayhawks in 2008 before selling them to the Orlando Magic ten years later, upon which they were relocated to Florida. Obviously one could ask why he sold them, but ten years doesn't exactly seem like a "buy and flip" period of someone looking to make a quick buck, and it seems like this was more of an NBA-decision than entirely down to him. He also seems to have made a decent commercial success in Erie:

DISCLAIMER - this shouldn't be viewed as attempting to influence opinion either way. Vote however your heart tells you to. But please do VOTE.

Scott Dyer seems to be the main man for the media stuff so far, however looks like Bob Heere, PhD - a professor of sports management, is also a shareholder and is the "Dutch Connection". Has some impressive credentials at two decent US universities, and reported that "Dr. Heere's research focuses on the sense of community and social identity fostered by sport around the world". Much more comforting to read than the usual guff about student housing development, luxury car brokering, invisible investment management firms and so on.

https://sportsdegreesonline.org/profile/bob-heere-phd/

The main money man (at least as of last year) was/is Steve Demetriou, CEO/Chairman of Jacobs which is a massive global consulting firm. A well-known sports fan who owns the Erie Bayhawks of the NBA D-League.

Can see where the "strong track record" comments are coming from.

Let the rumour mill begin.

I half-wondered if our previous American investors' ears might have perked up at the price tag. Any of our LinkedIn sleuths been watching Altman and co?

Great performance - says a lot that the only criticism you could perhaps justifiably level at the lads is that we should have had at least 5! After the first 10 minutes never seemed like any danger of Wealdstone getting into the match.

Passing was fast and fluid despite the middle of the field cutting up by the second half, and it is hard to understate how important Hayes is to the team - helps mix things up from the probing passing when there's an ever looming threat of him just turning on the afterburners and pulling the entire opposition out of shape from anywhere on the field. He's incredibly fun to watch, shades of the Derry Pele about him.

A loan would kick the can down the road for a little bit, however we'd likely be looking at interest rates in the double digits (if not close to credit card rates to be honest) - traditional banks wouldn't touch us as we don't generate any cash flow to service debts. So you'd likely be dealing with a lender who solely had their eyes on the stadium.

NFL play offs
at 06:45 26 Jan 2024

Sad the Texans' dream season finally came crashing down but hard to be too down as it feels like we've got a very exciting few years coming up - speaking of Tee Higgins I wouldn't be surprised if we made a run at him; Nico and Higgins on the outside with a healthy Tank Dell spotting and doing some hybrid slot work would surely put us in the scary category for offense. And we are finally an attractive destination for free agents which is nice. Amazing how one pick can turn an entire franchise around.

Fully on board the Lions train as well, especially now the Bills are gone. I live in Boise so have a soft spot for Allen coming out of the MW (as well as being an old fashioned gunslinger), and Khalil Shakir is my guy - his draft spot was criminal and a really nice humble lad as well, I am good friends with one of his former coaches and met him a couple of times during COVID. Glad to see he's catching on. His numbers this season (targets vs. catches and yards) compared with Diggs are eye-popping. Josh will need to restructure his deal in the offseason if they've got any chance of getting their squad over that hump.

Easiest upvote ever.

The Royle Family is about as perfect a sitcom as I've seen.
More recently I thought Derry Girls was excellent and forms a good holy trinity with Father Ted and Moone Boy.

Never thought I'd say it but If you've got nippers (and even if you haven't) then Bluey is an absolute delight. Hoping my kids never grow out of it.

Town fans said the ball was nowhere near the line, celebrating to see if the linesman might be fooled somehow (given the lad on the other line I don't really blame them). Very complimentary our our following and the noise coming from the Skircoat.

Special mention to the tinpot Taylor Swift concert light show right when Jimmy scored. Priceless.

Count another "glad to see Jags lose" fan here. Started following Houston in 2012/13 with some family connections in the area, and aside from a few playoff flirtations it has been a fairly perpetual horror-show of back-office mismanagement ($72m for Brock Osweiler..."inmates running the asylum"...letting Duane Brown walk...trading Hopkins for 3 shillings and half a Twix).

Fortunately finding out Deshaun Watson was/is a sexpest turned out to be a nadir from which things have progressively improved, and the arrival of CJ Stroud has had me pinching myself at times. He seems to see the game at half-speed, and I truly don't think we've seen a young player this talented at QB in the league for a long long time. Tank Dell snapping his leg was awful bringing to end such a fruitful partnership, and given events of the last few years (and a lifetime as a Dale fan) has me expected every play to end up with him writhing on the field and being carried off on a stretcher, but for now, the future is looking very bright.
