Crowd of less than 25,000 looming for play-off semi home leg
at 15:20 9 May 2024

I'm only going so I can say a tearful goodbye to the seat I've had since 2014.

5 Things From Saturday
at 11:54 29 Apr 2024

1. He constantly talks about being 'brave'. Surely a genuinely brave thing to do would be to drop the players who've constantly failed to impress, and instead bring in Meghoma, SAA and Dibling.

2. It does make you wonder who thought it was a good idea to employ a band to play outside the ground at the end of a game when everyone just wants to troop off home or to the pub to be miserable. The club seem so out of touch with reality it's quite alarming.

3. In the main we're a fickle bunch. If we get through the play-off semis the interest will pick up just as quick as it dropped off. Anyway, if we play Leeds at Wembley I'm sure some of their 300 billion fans can fill the empty blocks.

4. It's not ideal, but at least they care.

5. Better get Le Tiss warmed up then...

Some of our moves this season have been incredible to watch, like going back to the Keegan era, and I think the majority of the team can play that way. Unfortunately, it does rely on everyone being on the top of their game, all the time. If the confidence goes and players start to go missing, the whole thing breaks down and we don't appear to have the players to win the ball back when we give it away.

Nick's Jack Stephens fixation is weird. Blaming his inclusion in the team a couple of months ago for last night's 5-0 defeat is even more so. And so is this constant nonsense about a 'lack of leaders on the pitch'. We've got experienced players out there, it's not like we've got our entire youth team playing. As was mentioned by felly1, the stats prove that Flynn Downes' absence is much more significant than any other team selection. Without him we seem to lack steel and creativity. Somehow we've managed to assemble to team of players who are great at one touch passes, but aren't so great at scoring open goals and tackling when it really matters.

To be fair, McCarthy only played last night because they couldn't source a goalie's shirt with 'STEPHENS' on the back at such short notice.
That one was for Nick.

Fantastic. I seem to get stuck at each of the one million traffic lights every time I drive into Soton. Maybe we should employ Dan to think up a few songs for us.

I've been in the Northam for the cup games this season and I thought it was fine. The nippers at the back reminded me a bit of the Milton Muppets at The Dell. I'd get a ST in there but at my age I'm a bit concerned about whether I can stand up for the whole game if my back gives up on me. That said, being a tight old git, if they keep the price low I'm definitely up for it.

Southampton V Coventry City The Verdict
at 17:43 10 Apr 2024

Nick's dislike for Jack Stephens goes right back to the League Cup final when he blames him for losing the match (I personally tended to blame Jamie Vardy for stamping on VVD's ankle, but hey-ho). Since then there has not been a wasted opportunity to have a dig. Just lately the dislike has really been cranked up. If we lose, Stephens is to blame. If we draw, Stephens is to blame. And now, most bizarrely, even when we win, Stephens is to blame. Apparently the Cov goal last night was down to Stephens not being able to organise the defence (and not down to Bree/Arma failing to track their man). Stephens was even described in one post as being 'cumbersome' in the second half. I can't say I noticed that personally, but I do like the word 'cumbersome'. However, I do recall Nick being irrationally critical of SRL on occasions (although I think that may have been down to some Scouse turf war), so if I was Jack Stephens I wouldn't be too upset by all the stick.

Leeds away tickets
at 19:11 8 Apr 2024

They don't charge all their own fans £47. Behind the goals it's £41 or £34 (depending on the opposition). They get away with it because they shove the away fans in a corner of their main stand where their own supporters are thick enough to pay 47 quid. Horrible club.

I guess it's because he's very good with his feet. The same reason why most of the team are selected. They all fit in perfectly with the tippy tappy style. Which is absolutely fine if you score five goals every week. But not so fine if you don't and you end up needing to defend for your lives. It's a dilemma. Some of our play last night was a joy to watch, like a throwback to the Keegan era, but then some of the defending was like watching us last season. Ultimately, if Russell Martin wants to succeed here long term he'll either have to adapt his playing style, or bankrupt the club by bringing in some new players who can fit in with it.
Still, it's now essentially a three game season. And maybe with so much at stake in the play-offs they won't all stand around in the 97th minute staring at the ball while a bloke lying on the ground toe pokes it into the net. We shouldn't give up hope just yet.

Saw Chala play for the reserves at Staplewood a few times. Mystifying how he could look so totally out of his depth even in our reserve team when he played 86 times for his country. I read somewhere yesterday that Sergei has sadly been diagnosed with Parkinsons recently.

To be fair to the club, they were probably too busy trying to think of hilarious fire related songs for their half time playlist.
