General Election Thread
at 14:45 23 May 2024

To be fair, if you've not been deterred by handing over a load of money to a shady people trafficker or the potential death crossing the channel in a small boat, I doubt your eligibility for asylum is going to make a blind bit of difference. Oooh you'll be ineligible for asylum when you get there... bothered. Should stop wasting time on them and focus on the people traffickers.

Once the manifestos are out, I like to do the vote for policies thing where you blindly select the policies you think are best without knowing which party they belong to. Normally gives me a good idea of who's at least talking the best game, whether they're able to deliver it is an altogether different conversation.

Departures in the development squad
at 09:11 21 May 2024

I like to think he sits down with the player in question, spreads a load of cards over the table with stock phrases on it and asks them to pick two they want including in their leaving statement.

SDM- "inquisitive mind sounds good"
Nourry- " are you sure, we've had that recently"

End of Term Report 23/24 – Goalkeepers
at 10:28 18 May 2024

But the stats are adjusted for that and he was 3rd worst in the league. Based on the shots our opponents managed to get in with an average goalkeeper we should have conceded 7 less goals.

Conversely Dykes's stats are average, he's marginally under the number of goals he's scored for the amount of goals expected from the shots he's had. We still want/need better and he's average, why should Begovic even be entertained as being adequate or even worse for a new contract.

End of Season Review - Live Now On The Patreon
at 08:05 11 May 2024

Good podcast, it's interesting to think back to when Ainsworth was here and just how certain it seemed that we would be relegated. Puts into focus what a good job Marti did.

I'm excited for the summer and kind of agree with the bloke who said he wouldn't mind a full squad clear out, I trust Marti to bring in good players so the more the better to a certain extent. Financially it might be the right time to cash in on JCS, Field and a few others.

Be interesting to see what deals we make and how well organised the preseason is going to be.

Joe Walsh

Whoever the first choice is I think they will benefit from competition for places. Walsh has shown he can step in so to my mind that means we can take a risk on a new goalkeeper (like Stanley Nwabali) and assess them both in preseason. I wouldn't be going back in for Begovic personally.

I do hate it when the papers don't include the full quote, that makes much more sense.

Ilias Chair

I like Chair, as said by others he's hard working and skilful, not a common pairing. The court case makes me cautious about "building a team around him" for next season because it seems like he may be suddenly removed from the team. If we got a good offer for him I'd take it personally. I think he deserves a crack higher up and think this might be a good time, while rebuilding under Marti, to get a few young replacements or unknown players like Anderson in to see who can step up to his level.

Who will follow Rotherham and Huddersfield to League One?

Head says Plymouth, they've struggled recently and don't fancy them to get the result they need. Heart says Birmingham as it would be just rewards for the way the dropped Eustace for Rooney.

TBF I think he's been hard done by, his name deserves to be top 5 at least.

I liked the analysis by the young lad did scouting goalkeepers and think the Lincoln goalkeeper Jensen would be a good option.

I think he's 7th based alphabetically.

If you order by goals prevented he's 3rd worst in the league. I believe goal prevented looks at the expected goals vs goals conceded. So if you're getting loads of clean sheets because the teams neutralising the attempts of the opposition it's allows you to look more at the goalkeepers contribution.

Willock - Will He Stay?
at 17:56 27 Apr 2024

I think it's probably best all around if he moves on. If we keep him we'll only end up pointing at next season's L1 player tearing up the championship and say why didn't we get him. He's a good player but not irreplaceable and age and injury record suggesting it would be a bad bet to chuck all our money on.

Not sure what Ainsworth has to do with the conversation, poor manager but Willock was poor for Critchley before he arrived.

Apologies, didn't realise that you were in fit out, must be a massive factor. We've had a downturn in commercial work too but we're able to be topped up with other markets (Schools recently) and have a load of survey work if all else fails.

On WFH generally I keep going around in circles, I don't mind it but equally my commute isn't too bad so it wouldn't be the end of the world if I ended up back in 5 days a week (nearly all my team were happy to do that pre pandemic). The people who aren't performing well currently, historically always performed badly, so I don't blame WFH I just think they need to be put on a performance improvement plan but alas not my call. I've firmly been of the mindset that if they can't improve we should replace them but then we have trouble hiring as it is so taking flexible working out of it will only make things worse.

I also wonder what it's doing for development of younger staff as well, we have an apprentice in the office on his own today as we all WFH on a Friday and he can't. Not ideal.

I'm intrigued by the comment about WFH, I'm in the construction industry (consultant) and WFH 2 day's a week. We've recently been asked to consider coming back in 5 days a week but I'm not convinced it will change anything. It would be good to get a different opinion of it if you've had first hand experience of the negatives of WFH, especially within the same sector.

Next season - 4 key players for us to keep
at 07:42 25 Apr 2024

Seems fair. I try to think "would our players get in a decent championship teams starting lineup?" For our attack it's a universal no. Dykes definitely not, Chair and Willock maybe but one's almost certainly off and the other has a court case over his head.

The only player I think would make it as a yes would be JCS, so he'd be hardest to replace but possibly bring in the most money to rebuild. As you say his injury record suggests that taking the risk on keeping him could be rewarded with only a handful of appearances if they recur, so after his first good season of appearances might be a good time to cash in.

Thank you Marti Cifuentes.
at 10:52 21 Apr 2024

The reality is that if we can get money for Chair, we probably should take it all things considered. The whole court case thing may prevent us from getting offers though. Willock will be a free transfer and probably get a lot more money elsewhere, so imagine he's definitely gone.

They're both amongst our best players but there are other options out there and with Marti involved I'd be optimistic that he can find decent replacements if either ends up leaving.

at 10:27 21 Apr 2024

Trying to book a Stoke player, wave him over to talk 4 or 5 times then after he's ignored you, you go to him. Shows you how much the players respect him.

Thought he let too much go in the first half for him to then give Colback a booking for dissent showed how contrary he is as an official.

Keeper for next year
at 10:53 12 Apr 2024

If Walsh and Salamon aren't ready then really we need to bring in 2 goalkeepers. I think the problem for too long has been that we only realistically have one choice in goal. It's been true this season as the risk of starting Walsh means we stick with an ever waning Begovic. Or last season when Diengs form dipped and we had to play him because the back up was Archer. Competition would be a good start.
